  1. I mean, Byrd and/or Soriano has to be gone for this to make any sense whatsoever. If they are at all serious about the defense and baserunning thing, I'm assuming Campana makes the team. As long as next season looks to be a terrible one, they need to at least unload Byrd and give CF to Jackson. Eh, why bother wasting another players cheap years for a lost season? We've already pissed away Castro's pre-arb time.
  2. The results at the plate were pretty good, but almost certainly unsustainable. Holy crap, he walked 5 times and struck out 63 times in just 266 PA?

  4. if this isn't a minor league deal with spring training invite (doubtful at this time and coming off that year) this is not good.
  5. Agreed, but doesn't his overall usefullness as 1-1.5 WAR player depend on who else is around him in the rotation? I don't see how he does much for this Cubs team as it is currently put together. He's a cheap arm who'll eat inning assuming he's healthy. That has value on any team. If we're punting 2012, this is the perfect opportunity to see if he can get back to at least league average. I don't have a problem with him being in the picture for 2012 or anything, I just have very little faith. Also, is he arb eligible now? Are we looking at $2-3m?
  6. And forearm injuries aren't just a sore throat either.
  7. Wouldn't you generally face more batters per nine innings if things like your walk, hit and HR rate went up? That's not something that's in his favor.
  8. Does that help or hurt your argument? First, Wells threw 107 innings in his age-21 season in 2004. It's not like he was converted to pitching the year before his big league debut or something. Second, I look and see a player that pitched only 95 and 123 innings -- and never more than 131 -- before having his workload increased to 191 and 194 innings his first two years in MLB. With that rather sudden increase in workload, it doesn't surprise me he became injured and only pitched 142 innings last year. Help, unless you think he's likely to be injured the rest of his career because of a 2 year delayed injury from an increased workload. He's a pitcher though. Injuries generally aren't just one off issues with them. Arms deteriorate and when they start off mediocre (stuff wise, not results) they generally don't have much place to go but down.
  9. He doesn't strike people out, he's extremely hittable, and he's not all that great at preventing walks either. Couple that with what I thought was a considerable amount of luck on a few warning track drives that came up just short. I expected him to get worse from those early results, and so far he has. He's got marginal stuff and I just think it's very likely he's more like his 2011 numbers indicate than his early success. The difference in Wells '09-'10 and Wells '11 was that his HR rate nearly doubled and his GB rate tanked (likely a correlation) Pitch f/x is still unreliable going backwards regarding pitch type, but he threw the sinker ~5% less in 2011 vs 2010, I have no idea why, but I have a hard time just saying he was lucky to throw so many more groundballs and so many fewer home runs in '09 and '10. I understand the numbers aren't completely in my favor. But he's got mediocre stuff and his regression was expected (by me and others) so I'm not holding out much hope that the earlier success is going to be repeated.

  11. The Packers just played very poorly against the Chiefs and I think it's possible they could struggle again with Jennings out and a thin offensive line. I don't think the Bears have the ability to score much though I kind of have a feeling this will be a low scoring Packers win. Not as big of a blowout as you guys think it will be. Plus, our offense usually struggles against the Bears defense. I don't think it's going to be a blowout either. It doesn't have to be 45-10 to be a blowout. The Bears can't score. They are impotent on offense. The QB is going to provide negative points. GB could score just 2 offensive TD and still win by 13.
  12. I find this kind of thinking insane. Expensive free agents are expensive because they are really good and help teams win games. As a big market team, the Cubs can afford them and should employ them. There is no reason for this rebuiliding to be some multi-year task where we are forced to live with the garbage that is currently on the roster just because some people get off on the supposed purity of building solely from within. Signing good expensive free agents does nothing to prevent you from building up a farm system. Throwing away seasons is inexcusable. Where did he mention throwing away seasons? Why are you so hell bent that management is throwing away 2012 because we haven't signed a big name? Because signing those free agents was the only way to make meaningful improvements to the team for 2012. The marginal upgrades available via trade aren't enough to fundamentally change the overall weakness of the roster, unless you go out and give up everybody in the system. But that would be what actually damages your long-term plan and be against the whole concept of the parrelel front.
  13. I won't. Literally passing on every big time free agent available when all you had to do was spend money to acquire them in an offseason when all four of them would have helped would really freaking suck. The Cubs don't have enough assets to trade their way to short-term improvements.

  15. True, but that's largely because Hendry was a failed GM for a decade before this season. Theo is not. I do not like what they have done (or failed to do) so far, but I do believe he can still turn this into a winning organization.
  16. If they aren't spending now because they can't, then this organization's financial advantage over the opposition is a mirage, and that would suck mega balls. I would much, much, much rather they actually just chose to be too smart for their own good and not spend what was available to them.
  17. Green Bay is now a 13 point favorite
  18. I just think that is a ridiculous strategy to take.
