Based on? i don't mean to say that he's going to be the guy we sign, but our best chance at snagging a true #1 receiver. i'm basing this on the fact that he's the only big name FA that doesn't appear to be getting franchised. Oh, okay. I didn't know if you were reading things that made him seem a likely aquisition or just what you said here.

Considering how willing everybody in the organization was to take that giant step back last year, this might be the actual wake up call they need to finally stop living off the glory of 2010. Nobody seemed all that upset about having a 1st round exit. Everybody just chalked it up to a hangover and assumed they'd be back this season. But now that they might actually miss the playoffs that nonsense can stop. Bowman has to actually start acquiring impact players at some point. He hasn't done anything but sell so far. I'd be fine if it doesn't happen until the offseason. Missing the playoffs would suck, but maybe this team needs the excuse to fire Q and overhaul the supposed "core" that has done very little since the cup. My biggest concern is Rocky will hesitate to remain financially aggressive, but if he keeps the checkbook even moderately open, they should be much better very soon.

The Bears have plenty of spaces where they could use 1st round talent. They do not need to be tied into any one player or any one position with that first pick. If a guy like Floyd goes before they pick, there will be something else worth taking. I've been saying for a while that the Bears biggest problem is the fact that they have weaknesses on the line and at receiver. Ideally they solve the line completely and make it a strength while also acquiring top notch receiving talent. But in reality, they can win by simply solidifying one of those groups and make marginal improvements to the other. If the Bears wind up with multiple Earl Bennett type receivers, good and productive, but not dominant, they can still thrive on offense if the line does its job. If they get a top notch pass rusher with the 1st pick and only getting 2nd/3rd round talent (plus a free agent or two) to improve the line and receiving corps, the team should still be in good position, assuming they take the right guys.

Considering who is on the team, it's hard to argue against what is there, but Byrd/Lahair as 3/4 is atrocious. Byrd needs to be your 6th or 7th hitter at this point. And Lahair needs to be on your bench. -

Lovie deferred to Martz when it came to receivers and he never put a premium on height. For the record, you hardly need "big" receivers to be successful. Calvin Johnson is great and all but it's not like Detroit is some juggernaut, while the Giants just won the Super Bowl with nothing more than some ho-hum 6 footers. It took Lovie years to realize he needed actual NFL coaches on his staff, specifically on offense. They have been very slow to adapt to the necessary changes but I do believe Lovie actually wants a high powered passing offense. It's more a question of if they know how to do than if they are willing or have an enthusiasm.

Very plausible, but the article said he was alone. The other thought is alcohol, but it was at 10 AM, and being drunk in the morning is really more of a Kane thing. Don't be fooled by the boy scout persona. Kane is an open book, it's the ones like Toews that you can't trust. And being drunk at 10am is an any 20-something with millions in the bank and no day job thing.

if you google desean the first story is a rotoworld blurb about the GM being excited about keeping him and an indication that he will get tagged. if you google vincent the first story says "the San Diego Chargers will have little choice but to apply the Franchise Tag to wide receiver Vincent Jackson for a second straight year "

Z is the very definition of "Million dollar arm, ten cent head." He had (and still possesses) good stuff and could have been so much more. But he was held back by his temper and immaturity, and if he hasn't grown out of it by now, he never will. That's nonsense. The dude has had an incredible amount of success pitching in the major leagues. He has had a great career. If he was the definition of ten cent head he never would have had more than a cup of coffee in the majors. Or, at the very best, he would have had a flameout of a career like John Rocker.

What exactly has been strange about our moves (except Reed Johnson)? Weren't there two guys they acquired and then released? They let a somewhat useful guy go in the rule 5 draft for seemingly no reason. They've completely abandoned any hope for 2012 without any need for doing so. And they brought back Reed Johnson. I'd say there's been some strangeness going on around here. And they've also had the overhang of Theo compensation the entire offseason.

I would be shocked if the Bears traded their 1st for a veteran free agent. They are going to build through the draft. We can only hope they supplement that building with acquiring free agents as well, but I highly doubt they give up a 1st and premier FA money for one guy in an offseason where they need multiple receivers, help on both lines and fresh blood throughout the defense.

Q says he is "progressing" but is out tomorrow. I've been assuming that is what he's been battling for several weeks now. I would hope not -- I thought they weren't supposed to be playing if they had symptoms. Jesse Rogers says it's "symptoms" but perhaps not actual concussion and thinks he'll be back this weekend. He also says Hammer is a go for tomorrow night. I mean, I thought that's what he missed time with a while back, and then when I heard he was out again I worried was something related to it again. As for playing with symptoms, there's no way that doesn't happen with multiple guys.

What are you basing that feeling on? Well, there's really nothing in his history to suggest Emery should be good at identifying and signing quality offensive players. There's nothing on his resume that suggests he's a quality "big picture management" type of guy. The Bears have sucked at acquiring non-Cutler NFL offensive players and almost 100% of the management system that has sucked at it is still in place (coaches, scouts, etc). So, I think there's a lot out there to give Bears fans doubts about the team's ability to acquire the right guys.

We've been talking about assets and collecting assets, that's exactly what Carpenter is. With his stuff and upside, he could easily become a part of acquiring other, better assets if he came up this year and had success. That isn't enough to freak out over, but it's enough for a bit of an annoyance. But we knew all along they were going to give up an asset and not just some empty minor league jersey. -

Because we were getting Theo either way. The Red Sox weren't going to pull him back and force him to work for them another year. Thus, the Red Sox were entitled to a lower level, decent prospect like the Twins received for MacPhail in the exact same situation, but because Lucchino pitched a fit and dragged this on, he got a near-ML ready reliever with some upside. I love that we got Theo and in a vacuum he's well worth Carpenter and then some, but this isn't a vacuum. There was a prior precedent set for this exact situation and we exceeded that precedent by quite a bit. That's what annoys me and why I think the Red Sox won the negotiations. And giving away a guy who could become a really good to great late inning reliever for a long time is fairly significant. Especially considering Carpenter's very close to being ML ready and the prior precedent didn't even make the majors. Eh, when this went down I was under the impression somebody like Carpenter or Vitters would be going over. Their insanely high opening requestions and feet dragging helped them get a little more than the Cubs probably thought was required, but it's hardly that big of a deal.
