I'm still baffled by the Reed Johnson signing. -
When we know how terrible they likely are going to be coming in I'm not sure why we can't point it out. It's not like this was a team expected to put up good numbers that has surprisingly underperformed.

Even with the bleak outlook on this year's team, walk-up sales are a pretty small part of ticket revenue. They sold 34,000 tickets for a Wednesday afternoon game in April when nobody thought the team would be any good. But walk up sales aren't the only missed revenue. 15,000 fewer humans in the building also cuts into bottom line.

Really? He said that it is the easiest? I could see it being the easiest to do if it was your sole goal. If you go into an offseason determined to have a good bullpen, you can lock it down. But with budgets, other needs and a reasonable amount of attention given to a bullpen, I would think it would be among the most volatile groups.

I think there have been 2 themes people have kept going back to when discussing how this team might not be that bad. One, is that the pitching should be pretty solid even if they don't get Cy Young caliber performances, due primarily to the depth of starting pitching. Two, is that even if the offense isn't impressive, all offense is down in general and it won't take much to at least flirt with average production. But that second point also means that while the threshold for being a good offense is lower, the threshold for being a really good pitching staff is higher. As solid as they have been in general, and as often as they've had "quality starts" at the outset of the season, the Cubs are still pretty low on the list of total ERA in the NL while the starting rotation is just 8th, .3 runs behind 7th and 2 full runs behind 1st. Obviously all this stuff is quite early and subject to massive fluctuation going forward, but the point remains that if you are counting on quality pitching depth to keep the Cubs respectable this season, quality pitching depth isn't necessarily a unique thing in the NL these days. It all still relates back to how you compare with the competition. If all you are is average at pitching and below average at hitting, you are going to rack up the losses at a substantial rate.

Are you just purposely not getting the difference between running the bases while he's pitching and throwing him out there regularly when he isn't? It's needless risk at a pointless time in the season. There's needless risks, and there's trusting the college football player to potentially run 180 feet without killing himself if you give him time to get ready. He hasn't played college football in 6 years. He's a pitcher. I'm not worried about him killing himself. This is stupid.

Having the opportunity to stretch or warmup doesn't prevent a starting pitcher from potentially getting injured while pinch running. Are there landmines in between 2nd and 3rd? Samardzija isn't exactly Jamie Moyer out there. It was much colder on Monday night than it is right now. Not sure what any of this has to do with it. He's a pitcher, he doesn't need to be running in cold weather early games in a meaningless season.

Um, only some? What idiot would think you had to be really bad this year in order to facilitate longterm improvement? Sorry, I worded that wrong. I just mean that most people would take a 40 win season in stride as long as improvements were made in the organization such as a strong draft, international signings, the emergence of several prospects, etc., but some people would call out Theo for spouting BS about "every season is an opportunity to win, we're going to try to win every year although the future is going to be the most important thing" and just not be able to accept their team going through so much futility, even if they knew that the organization is improving elsewhere. I highly doubt most people would accept a 40-win season. That type of complete incompetence would run the risk of seriously speeding up the loss of interest and revenue.

I wonder if it has a signing bonus or something to get him more money now. Yes, he'll get more in 2012 and more in total guarantees, in comparison to his old deal.
