    Rarely is a non-update considered a legitimate update. But this is. I've been trying to decide if the delay benefits or hurts the Cubs, assuming they are the "favorite" (whatever that exactly means in this context). On the one hand, some teams may have whittled down their budget for this year by the end of the offseason; on the other hand, who knows how teams budget, right? For all we know, teams' budget year just flipped from 2011/2012 to 2012/2013, or perhaps even other teams are willing to make an exception for Soler - and now they have some additional 2012 revenue to work with. I'm just spit-balling. Ultimately, I'm not sure I see a connection, but it does make me wonder. The Cubs were clear-cut favorites 2 months ago. Now it is less clear. Not sure how the delay can be anything but detrimental.

But I think some people might be going a little overboard on the praise. The video didn't match up the descriptions I read. If you freeze frame the replay right when he releases the ball, you can see 2nd base. It looks to me like he is roughly the same distance from 2B as 2B is from home plate. That's about 250 feet, or maybe less. It's shallow RC field, an area from which only the fastest runners or most aggressive would tag, unless the CF is Juan Pierre. This is a nice throw, but it's also a throw that loads of people can make. Now maybe my estimated measurements are off, but it's not like he was throwing from anywhere close to the 370 foot deep fence.

    I think it's weird to find the poor job they do charming or accept it as something that has to be a part of the game.

    So then you're in favor of wildly fluctuating strike zones? Sure. It's just a game, and having different umpire interpretations of a strike zone makes it more interesting I don't think that is true at all.

    Eric Gregg was in favor of rapidly expanding strike zones, and waist lines. He died young, and only one of those was the cause.

    games 1-2 he started at 3rd and hit 8th. Then he sat, then he started at 3rd and hit 8th in games 4-6. He hit 7th in game 7-8. 8th in games 9-10. Inserted toward the end of game 11 at 3B and in the 8 spot again yesterday. So 2 non-starts. 7 starts at 3B in the 8th spot. 2 spots at 3B in the 7 spots and 1 start at DH in the 8 spot. Is there some sort of expectation that he will be worked around in the 8 spot, forcing him to see more pitches?

    Well, on the plus side, they are making it very clear that punishment depends entirely on injury. On the negative side, this is incredibly stupid.

    Doubt Vogelbach sniffs Peoria this season, let alone has a VERY good chance of it. Really? I think he'll probably show up with Baez. Maybe give them both 15-20 games in Boise and move them up. He's got a good approach and big bodied guys need to be moved quicker anyway, due to their primes usually coming earlier. That's an....., interesting theory. Never heard that one.

    I don't think anyone has argued that this is the preferred method, just that it can be done. Yeah, and in part as a counter to some of the knee jerk "OMG WE DIDN'T SIGN ANY BIG NAME FAs IT'S GONNA BE 5 YEARS BEFORE WE'RE GOOD AGAIN" nonsense that has gone on. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and not going big in free agency this offseason absolutely does not mean we're in for 3-4 years of rebuilding. Oh goody, more insulting people who wanted the front office to try.

    Let's move on from the Maholm talk and discuss the next one. Cubs go into Miami having lost all three of their series so far this season. The rotation starts their 3rd trip around with Dempster taking on Josh Johnson, who has been decidedly mediocre so far this year. Probably going to be plenty of Zambrano and Guillen talk this week. Oh yeah, this is also tax deadline day this year.

    Why the hell do you think they acquired him because he had decent numbers against the Cubs? This is lunacy.

    Why would it take a trade of Byrd to get a guy who was released? DFA isn't released. They have 10 days to either trade, release or waive him. So if other teams are interested and offering the Red Sox something of value, it might take something of value to get him. then somebody might want to edit the first post in the thread. Either way, not sure it makes any sense that you "kind of hope we wait for byrd to get going", since the 10-day window isn't set by the Cubs.
