Just saw the HR on Gameday. From the camera view, off the bat, that thing looked more likely to be a blooper into short leftcenter rather than a homer. Didn't look like a couple rows in though, guy in front row caught it.

People continue to suckle on Dumpster’s teat as if it were Salma Hayek’s. He gave up 6 hits, 4 walks, and 6 ERs in under 5 innings today, but it’s not his fault. Couldn’t be. No, instead the sucklers look at his sub 3.00 ERA, his still sparkling 1.15 WHIP, his anemic run support and declare him the best EVAH. I gave up this battle long ago on message boards, but the fire still burns. Dumpster puts the over in rated. If only the Cubs could somehow maroon him on Gilligan’s Island. Or at least Des Moines. One last year and perhaps, finally, we’ll be done with him. Free at last, Free at last, thank God Almighty, they’ll be Free at last. Okay, which one of you bozos has this second login?

I know Banedon is the only one that agrees with me, but I think it is faster to dive head first, since you immediately gain 6'. However I don't think the risk of injury outweighs the extra .01 second you gain. Nice play by Barney. I don't think immediately means what you think it means.

no he doesn't. He was a 1+ WAR 1B in his prime (pre-2009). Nobody cares about that. At his best there had to be a dozen players outperforming him at his position, and his best barely lasted at all. I mean, he wasn't horrible at his best, that's about the nicest thing you could say. And smaller market teams were able to think about using him to fill-in for a season or two at a time. But come on, the guy is a dime a dozen.

Okay, what the hell is a middle of the road comp then? Sounds to me like "most likely". Nobody is talking about locks. Rizzo could end up worse than LaRoche, that would really suck. LaRoche has not been a very productive 1B and if Rizzo became him it would be very disappointing, so why are people trying to sugarcoat LaRoche's career?

you're honestly saying you don't understand the difference between spending 7 mil on one good player and 7 mil on three good players? No, I'm honestly saying that I don't understand the difference in spending 7 Mil at the RB position on 1 star and 2 scrubs vs. spending 7Mil at the RB position on 3 average players with different strengths, if the problem at hand is spending 7Mil on the RB position. I don't understand how you don't understand the difference. First off, $7m isn't the threshold. The "elites" are getting and/or want $8+ on average, and in reality those deals often pay well over that in the first couple years. Second, if you have 3 guys all contributing and combining to make $7m, having one of them get injured or suddenly lose effectiveness is not the problem of having your one stud do the same. 3 guys splitting $7m provides flexibility and fresh legs, whereas one guy making $8+ makes you far too reliant on that one guy producing, and doing it for multiple years when that player's production really doesn't correlate all that greatly with team success anyway.

$7m for 3 guys is not a lot of money and has nothing to do with the discussion of spending $20+m guaranteed and $7m+ per on one guy. There is? I'm not sure why that's just an assumption. I'm not really sure what it is you are saying here. Anyway, the past decade plus is littered with teams who have regretted giving huge contracts to supposedly elite RBs. It's an unnecessarily risky investment. The teams with actual elite RB haven't exactly reaped a ton of benefits from those guys either.

I wouldn't call LaRoche the floor either. I'd call LaRoche a middle-of-the-road comp on what Rizzo might be. People seem to have this negative impression of LaRoche's career. It hasn't been a great career, but he's been a very productive first baseman, whose defensive UZR numbers would look a lot better if it wasn't for the 2005 stats. He has not been a very productive first baseman. He's been a middling one. What has he been, a 1 or 2 WAR player at his best? Lesser organizations trying to patch a hole would live with LaRoche, but he is a guy who as soon as he's on your team you are hoping to find his successor. Rizzo, as the Cubs #1 prospect and the new regime's biggest acquisition to date, panning out as Adam LaRoche, would be a big disappointment.

I don't think you are doing a good job of showing that at all. In a salary cap sport you have to make choices and let good players walk away simply for financial reasons. If you have an elite RB and pay him elite RB money, you are almost certainly doing so at the expense of, or in the place of, your passing game. And if your passing game isn't settled, your team isn't. The Bears managed to field a great team for about a year and a half thanks to elite defense and a RB/QB/WR combo that barely got the job done. They couldn't maintain that success though, and you won't maintain any success if you put your salary cap eggs in the RB basket. It's just not smart NFL decision making to spend big on the position.

While I agree with your general point, I wouldn't say lot of mediocre teams make the playoffs, a couple per year, probably. It's usually because of a crap division that gets their winner in by default. Most playoff teams are pretty good. But if you want to be really good for a considerable amount of time, the way to do it is by solidifying your QB/passing game, not by paying one RB.

I doubt it is very rare. Everybody in the AL East is .500 or better. It's only a quarter of the way in so a lot of teams haven't even played each other yet. A week later and every team in both eastern divisions is over .500.
