From MLBTR: Both center fielder Dexter Fowler and catcher Jason Castro are available in a deal and the Astros wouldn’t mind dealing for bullpen help. Fowler had a decent year and enjoyed more success as a right-handed hitter. The 28-year-old (29 by Opening Day) slashed .327/.419/.467 as a right-handed hitter but hit just .260/.361/.376 from the other side of the plate. Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle has heard that the asking price is high on Castro and that there aren’t any contract talks currently taking place between the two sides. Fowler would be a decent trade target. He'll be 29 years old next year, still controllable, and would open up the option of Alcantara being used as a super sub or in a deal for pitching.

The bottom line for me is that we have the money and there are FAs available that will fill some of the holes on this team for the next few years. If we don't contend in 2015, we'll have a better idea as to what needs to be fixed for 2016. If we try to "get by" in 2015, there's no guarantee that we will outbid the big spenders for someone like Price next year.

First of all, why? Second of all, who would be the third team in that deal? Because Victorino could play CF, would add the veteran presence that the Cubs need, and should be available inexpensively because the Red Sox have a glut of OFs. I don't see a need for any other team to be involved.

Assuming he's completely healthy, I would love to see the FO work out a Jackson/Victorino trade.

Maybe I'm being super-paranoid, but I'm wondering if our sudden love of Russell Martin came about from getting vibes on the big FA pitchers. Martin makes a lot of sense (OBP, better pitch framing, veteran leadership, etc.) for the Cubs, but only in addition to the one big name FA pitcher. I think Martin makes more sense if the Cubs are going after more reclamation guys. Not that a big name pitcher couldn't use his pitch framing, game calling abilities, but I would think Lester/Scherzer would need it less so than the Scott Feldmans of the world. My point is that Martin makes a lot more sense if we're really serious about contending this year (hence the big name FA pitcher). If we're going to putz around for another year with reclamation projects and see what happens, then we don't need to spend big on Martin. I'm assuming that our interest in Lester/Hamels/Shields and Martin means we're serious about contending in 2015.

If I remember right, that was what the FO was saying when Baez and Soler were tearing up the minor leagues and Cub fans wanted them up immediately. Soler only had 621 PA. Baez had 1350. This might be more relative to each player on a case-by-case basis than you're willing to admit. I'm just repeating what my recollection of what Theo said. I guess he might use it as a reason to bring up a prospect when he chooses rather than what the fans want. I agree with your other post: Of course if the Cubs aren't doing well, it probably means Russell will be up in 2016.

I find it interesting that you accuse me of trolling when the discussion was about Russell being ready for the ML now and I pointed out that Theo believes prospects need a certain amount of time and ABs in the ml before being ready for the ML.

I believe he's inferring that Bryant was ready for the majors the whole year and the Cubs kept him down anyway, so they'll do the same thing with Russell. Of course, the situations are completely different from one another and absolutely nothing can be inferred in how they'll handle Russell based on what they did with Bryant. You're right Tim, but Theo has often said that he believes prospects need a certain amount of time and ABs in the ml before bringing them up to the ML.

With there being a lack of SS on the FA market maybe someone grossly overpays in a trade for Castro, that's about the only way I see them trading him. I don't get why so many writers seem to think we are in a rush to trade Castro. He's good, he's young and he's signed to a team friendly deal. Yeah especially since Alcantara is certainly less offensively, Baez is still a question mark with great potential, and Russell is still at least a year away. Russell is not at least a year away. Alcantara isn't "certainly" less offensively, but yeah he probably is. Yikes. AT LEAST? He's already big league ready. Not according to the FO "plan".

It must not be obvious to the posters who post every quote from the FO and then discuss how brilliant the FO is for saying that.

"If the right things line up, we could have an active off-season. We're not going to force it." Those quotes are just posturing by Hoyer to lower the asking price of trade targets and FAs.

The short answer is no, you probably aren't the only one. The longer answer is you should be the only one because passing on guys today in hopes of getting others guys a year from now is a great way to not get any guys. The longer answer is you should be the only one because every season is sacred because it represents the chance to win the World Series.
