  1. [expletive] yeah i tend to give this FO the benefit of the doubt (like with the ross thing) because they aren't idiots but i saw literally nothing remotely redeeming about this possible move Sometimes non-idiots do idiotic things (releasing Wright, signing Ross, thinking about Breslow). How is signing Ross an idiotic thing if Lester made that part of his demands with whatever team signed him? Do you honestly pass on Lester because of 2 years of a back up catcher that plays 7 innings every 5th game? While Montero and Castillo was a rather dreamy tandem, it's not all that realistic. Someone wasn't going to be happy sitting a lot when they had both already proven to be everyday starters. Since Ross has mega experience in the catching department, maybe he will be good at teaching Schwarber how to carry the torch once his 2 year contract expires, or he proves to be too much of a liability to the team. You're assuming that Lester made that demand (which I doubt). Secondly, I'm afraid that Ross is going to play more than 7 innings every 5th game. (God forbid Montero gets injured.) As for old defensive catchers who can't hit a lick, we already have Henry Blanco to teach Scwarber without taking a spot in the lineup.

  3. I rather get Seth Smith who can actually hit. The only advantage to Maybin is that he plays CF.
  4. I suggested a few pages ago: How about a package starting with Baez & Alcantara to the Nationals for Zimmerman and Span? It's not as sexy as Zimmerman and Harper, but it's a lot cheaper than giving up Russell, Soler, or Bryant.
  5. We should have used all of Lester's money to hire Mike Scioscia and Bruce Bochy as coaches to add another 10-15 wins.

  7. Between adding people to the front office and coaches/managers, is it any wonder that Ricketts is called PTR? not sure about PTR, but it is a wonder why you still post here I'm still here waiting for the Cubs to actually spend money on the team instead of more front office positions, additional coaches, and more real estate acquisitions. I guess some of you get excited about all of that stuff, but I'm more into the players on the field.

  9. Jaso would be a good pickup. Jaso vs. RHP .272/.368/.424/.793 Castillo vs. LHP .306/.373/.472/.845
  10. From MLBTR: Both center fielder Dexter Fowler and catcher Jason Castro are available in a deal and the Astros wouldn’t mind dealing for bullpen help. Fowler had a decent year and enjoyed more success as a right-handed hitter. The 28-year-old (29 by Opening Day) slashed .327/.419/.467 as a right-handed hitter but hit just .260/.361/.376 from the other side of the plate. Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle has heard that the asking price is high on Castro and that there aren’t any contract talks currently taking place between the two sides. Fowler would be a decent trade target. He'll be 29 years old next year, still controllable, and would open up the option of Alcantara being used as a super sub or in a deal for pitching.
  11. he White Sox have signed first baseman Adam LaRoche to a two-year, $25MM deal, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
  12. The rumors all along have been $150+ million, so I have trouble believing they would waste everybody's time by offering $110-$120 million.
  13. Nothing like $150+ million to bring out the genuine love for a city and their team.
  14. The bottom line for me is that we have the money and there are FAs available that will fill some of the holes on this team for the next few years. If we don't contend in 2015, we'll have a better idea as to what needs to be fixed for 2016. If we try to "get by" in 2015, there's no guarantee that we will outbid the big spenders for someone like Price next year.
  15. First of all, why? Second of all, who would be the third team in that deal? Because Victorino could play CF, would add the veteran presence that the Cubs need, and should be available inexpensively because the Red Sox have a glut of OFs. I don't see a need for any other team to be involved.
  16. Assuming he's completely healthy, I would love to see the FO work out a Jackson/Victorino trade.
  17. Maybe I'm being super-paranoid, but I'm wondering if our sudden love of Russell Martin came about from getting vibes on the big FA pitchers. Martin makes a lot of sense (OBP, better pitch framing, veteran leadership, etc.) for the Cubs, but only in addition to the one big name FA pitcher. I think Martin makes more sense if the Cubs are going after more reclamation guys. Not that a big name pitcher couldn't use his pitch framing, game calling abilities, but I would think Lester/Scherzer would need it less so than the Scott Feldmans of the world. My point is that Martin makes a lot more sense if we're really serious about contending this year (hence the big name FA pitcher). If we're going to putz around for another year with reclamation projects and see what happens, then we don't need to spend big on Martin. I'm assuming that our interest in Lester/Hamels/Shields and Martin means we're serious about contending in 2015.

  19. If I remember right, that was what the FO was saying when Baez and Soler were tearing up the minor leagues and Cub fans wanted them up immediately. Soler only had 621 PA. Baez had 1350. This might be more relative to each player on a case-by-case basis than you're willing to admit. I'm just repeating what my recollection of what Theo said. I guess he might use it as a reason to bring up a prospect when he chooses rather than what the fans want. I agree with your other post: Of course if the Cubs aren't doing well, it probably means Russell will be up in 2016.

  21. Kris Bryant says "Hi". You are shockingly bad at concern trolling. I find it interesting that you accuse me of trolling when the discussion was about Russell being ready for the ML now and I pointed out that Theo believes prospects need a certain amount of time and ABs in the ml before being ready for the ML.
  22. Kris Bryant says "Hi". Kris Bryant spending three weeks in AAA next year has what exactly to do with your belief that Addison Russell is at least a year away? I believe he's inferring that Bryant was ready for the majors the whole year and the Cubs kept him down anyway, so they'll do the same thing with Russell. Of course, the situations are completely different from one another and absolutely nothing can be inferred in how they'll handle Russell based on what they did with Bryant. You're right Tim, but Theo has often said that he believes prospects need a certain amount of time and ABs in the ml before bringing them up to the ML.
  23. James projections are always super crazy. His pitching projections certainly hint that we ought to save our money on Lester: Jake Arrieta: 31 GS, 195 IP, 18 HR, 66 BB, 174 K, 12-10, 3.55 ERA Kyle Hendricks: 28 GS, 176 IP, 8 HR, 39 BB, 135 K, 12-8, 3.17 ERA Edwin Jackson: 28 GS, 164 IP, 18 HR, 64 BB, 130 K, 7-11, 4.50 ERA Eric Jokisch: 27 GS, 174 IP, 16 HR, 46 BB, 140 K, 10-9, 3.57 ERA Neil Ramirez: 66 G, 60 IP, 7 HR, 26 BB, 66 K, 3-3, 0 SV, 3.75 ERA Hector Rondon: 64 G, 66 IP, 6 HR, 20 BB, 61 K, 4-4, 40 SV, 3.05 ERA Pedro Strop: 66 G, 64 IP, 3 HR, 28 BB, 68 K, 4-3, 0 SV, 3.09 ERA Jacob Turner: 27 G, 19 GS, 114 IP, 12 HR, 39 BB, 76 K, 5-7, 4.26 ERA Tsuyoshi Wada: 27 GS, 151 IP, 18 HR, 45 BB, 133 K, 8-9, 4.05 ERA Travis Wood: 31 GS, 185 IP, 20 HR, 72 BB, 146 K, 9-11, 3.99 ERA And just for grins: Jon Lester: 33 GS, 217 IP, 20 HR, 56 BB, 198 K, 13-11, 3.36 ERA
  24. With there being a lack of SS on the FA market maybe someone grossly overpays in a trade for Castro, that's about the only way I see them trading him. I don't get why so many writers seem to think we are in a rush to trade Castro. He's good, he's young and he's signed to a team friendly deal. Yeah especially since Alcantara is certainly less offensively, Baez is still a question mark with great potential, and Russell is still at least a year away. Russell is not at least a year away. Alcantara isn't "certainly" less offensively, but yeah he probably is. Yikes. AT LEAST? He's already big league ready. Not according to the FO "plan".
