  1. Thanks. I'm a long time lurker but finally decided to join and get into the action (last season didn't inspire much posting...) Too busy banging your head against the wall?
  2. I want the Cubs to extend MB. It sounds like he'll give the Cubs a hometown discount, but I'd pay FA market value to keep him in Wrigley.
  3. Tomorrow is Photo Day! :D
  4. So did Jason DuBois. And where is your information for this? That's conjecture, plain and simple. I'm sorry, but that is way out of line. His minor league career OPS is .692. Last year, in 534 ABs, he put up a .610 OPS. His OBP was .271 and his K/BB total was 17/109. I actually agree with his defensive skills, and think those errors were just flukes. But he's looking like a Neifi Perez at best right now. Jason Dubois shouldn't be compared with Cedeno. They have nothing in common. Any time I saw Cedeno (BP and FP) he looked lackadaisical. Not to mention Bruce saying he needed to do some growing up. So no, it's not just conjecture. It's pretty silly to use his minor league career numbers when he showed so much offensive progression as he advanced through the system. He was a whopping 17 when he was playing rookie ball for the Cubs and didn't really start turning it on until AA after a decent start in rookie ball. Sorry he didn't take off right away. That shouldn't be held against him. His K/BB was trending in the right direction the last few seasons before his first full season in the majors. Give the kid a break. Has Cedeno ever OPSed .800+? Yup, in rookie ball and AAA. It's not so far fetched. And Bill James projected Cedeno to hit .310/.358/.442/.800 last season.
  5. Hill against the White Sox? I hope he crams his AAA stuff down Ozzie's freaking throat.
  6. If the Mets acquire some pitching, then they look like the team to beat in the NL. Marshall for Milledge? I dont think the Mets would bite on that. After all, their asking price for Milledge at the break was Barry Zito. I thought the asking price for Blanton was Milledge. I never heard anything about Zito/Milledge. The asking price for 1/2 a season of Zito was indeed Milledge.
  7. Look at that RS. 8-) Our RA should be a lot better than that though. IIRC, PECOTA isn't in love with Z or Hill right now.
  8. He's shown flashes of being a very good ballplayer. I doubt the Cubs give up on him so easily. He just wasn't emotionally ready to become an ML ballplayer. Personally, I think it was his attitude. He was too complacent with being in Chicago instead of working his butt off. His misplays in the field were inexcusable. He has soft hands, ridiculous range, and a cannon for an arm. But somehow he managed to botch the most routine plays time and time again. That seems like work ethic to me. His bat will be fine. I don't see .800 OPS from him being out of line with his minor league numbers or ability. With stellar defense, which he's fully capable of, he's very much a quality ML SS. Ronny's '06 performance really irked me, but the talent is there to be so much better.
  9. Well that's not good. I thought for sure his arm strength would come back close to where it was. Miller is nothing special if he can't push it above 92 regularly.
  10. Prior will be healthy this year. I will it to be so. 8-)
  11. Why? He has never said a word to the Yankees or Boston when they sign people to ridiculous ass contracts. So explain why its ok for him to single out Hendry and Sabean? It's not the most rational take on the situation, is it?
  12. ^^^ I heartily endorse this post.
  13. Gooz Gooz Gooz! The 3 plus pitches are back! Marquis is a goner. It sucks that the Cubs wasted 21MM on him, but you go with performance over payroll when the WS is your goal. I'm sure Hendry will see the light before the ASB, if not sooner.
  14. If Marquis is the 5th starter, Cotts is going to send him packing. If Cotts doesn't, Guzman will.
  15. And the Dodgers have since said they weren't going to trade top prospects for Maddux. B prospects or Izturis seems like the choice. Hendry went with the ML ready option, for better or worse. People can complain about Izturis all they want, but at least he's good enough to make the majors, which the vast majority of B prospects won't ever sniff.
  16. Defensive stats are currently next to worthless, IMO. I did like Murton's throw from the WT to double off Encarnacion at 1st.
  17. I share that optimism, even if cautiously so. Lou seems genuinely to believe this is as much talent as he's had as a manager. I'm confident he'll put productive lineups together. The health of the pitching staff will determine much as will Ted Lilly being able to throw innings and keep the ball down and Jason Marquis to bounce back. I'm not among those counting Marquis out. I gues spring training really is a time of optimism. Bruce, heard you on the radio this morning raving about Izturis's defense. How valuable do you think that will be for this staff? since neifi is rated similar defensively, i doubt that it will be a big enough improvement to really be noticed. that goes for cedeno as well. just my 2 cents. Are you implying that Cedeno played well defensively last year? I would definitely disagree with that if you were. I think he has more defensive potential then he showed last year, but he struggled there for long stretches of time. Ronny made some brilliant plays last season, but the routine stuff gave him problems. He has the potential to be very much above average defensively at SS. The skills are there. The consistency is not.
  18. I think you can allow the other team to use the DH while still sending your pitcher to the plate. At least it was done last year by gentleman's agreement...
  19. Clines did do some good things... wasn't he the one responsible for altering D-Lee's stance/approach to the plate that lead to his breakout 2005 season? Dusty and Clines didn't kill our OBP by ruining individual hitter's plate discipline. They killed it with their input on personnel selection.
  20. Depends on why he had the bad spring (injury, couldn't locate his offspeed because it's AZ or what). I think he deserves quite some leeway after his second half last season. It would take an absolutely shocking meltdown this spring for me to even consider taking Hill out of the rotation. I mean like Rick Ankiel territory. Agreed-he's got a longer leash than spring training can break. A bad spring training would shorten that leash for the season, but I can't see him not making it out of spring for me at least. A "bad spring" is hard to define. Bad numbers by a pitcher don't really say much of anything in the very hitter friendly arizona spring. He'd have to have no command, and just look out of whack to think about pulling him. Even then I think you have to give him a couple starts in the regular season to prove he doesn't belong. From all reports I heard, Hill's curve is there. Last spring it didn't come around until he was about 3/4 of the way through ST. I don't expect a bad spring from Rich.
  21. Patterson is "sure-handed?" When did this happen?
  22. "This is my house!"
  23. I love you, Lou. Zambrano / Lilly / Prior / Hill / Marquis
  24. AZ Phil over at The Cub Reporter says Prior looked really good today. http://mvn.com/mlb-cubs/2007/02/22/no-this-is-heaven/
