  1. Possible arm injury? What was he doing in the bathroom?
  2. He said he wasn't going to make him. It's not a big deal and Piniella isn't making it one. Last season the Cubs made him trim it and it was still way past the ears. This isn't the Yankees.
  3. The Cubs org made him trim it back last season as well. I'm sure if Piniella didn't demand it, Oneiri and company would have.
  4. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/260181,cst-spt-cubnt16a.article Yup. Hopefully he's just being very cautious.
  5. Zito changed the market. There was no reason for Z (advised by his agent) to sign before this last crop of FA pitchers signed.
  6. so Marquis's ERA really was 5.50 last season?
  7. Marquis won't be a world-burner, but I think he could be average. Let's hope for some stellar D and the return of his sinker.
  8. Pissssss. Hey, you two stop playing lightsabers and direct your piss into the proper receptacles.
  9. The sad part is Neifi doesn't even notice. Well broken in from many a ST.
  10. I guess Marquis is this year's Jacque Jones.
  11. It serves 2 purposes: 1. to prevent flaking (ash). 2. to see where you are making contact with the ball. I don't have much experience with maple, so I couldn't tell you if it flakes/cracks/whatever.
  12. Its not insulting. I don't understand this. IIRC, you are one of the guys here (a list that includes myself, BTW) who generally gets on Jim for spending his money foolishly. Z has several miles on his arm at a young age, and his mechanics ain't exactly what you would call Seaver-esque. Giving him - or any present day pitcher - a 7 yr deal is crazy, IMO. I like that Jim (apparently) recognizes this and is at least attempting to structure the contract in a way that makes sense. And please do not compare the Z offer to Soriano's deal. Soriano was on the open mkt. I wouldn't give Z 5/90 and certainly not 7/126, but given the current market 5/90 is a very low offer. Even 7/126 is most likely below Z's market value. Sounds like he's going to give us a hometown discount afterall. 8-)
  13. Hey, I'd throw in option years based on IP the previous seasons. I'd be happy with 4 to 5 years and several option years based on durability. If Z is healthy, he'll be worth the contract, IMO.
  14. Muskat says the offers wasn't made, but parameters were exchanged. Z seems to think 5 years is the right length.
  15. You just can't make this stuff up.
  16. Tim Hardaway won't be a regular there, that's for sure.
  17. That's how he sounded at the convention too.
  18. I'd be much happier with a 5 year contract than 7+, even if it means paying more per season. Thanks for clearing that up, Carlos.
  19. I love that anecdote about Sosa.
  20. I think it will be one of the big 3 college kids if they remain at the top of the pack. I'd guess LHP David Price (Vanderbilt), C Matt Wieters (Georgia Tech), RHP Andrew Brackman (North Carolina State), RHP Matt Harvey (HS), LHP Joe Savery (Rice). Is Wieters anywhere as good as Maurer? I don't know about his bat (other than him having more power), but he's not even close to as good behind the dish. Not that I'd complain if we nabbed him. I'd like a catcher of the future to you know, actually be in our system.
  21. some article (Daily Herald?) said Prior was ahead of Miller, who is in the long-toss phase of his rehab. didnt say where prior was, though. how is miller rehabbing? he was pitching in the big leagues in september? But not at 100%. few pitchers pitch at 100%. as far as i know teams dont rehab players (especially pitchers) in the majors. Miller was nowhere near even 90% when he was pitching last year. And teams, although not officially, rehab pitchers in the majors all the time. What do you call Wood's 2000 season? Or any pitcher coming off a major surgery, like Tommy John, that needs that year to get fully healthy? John Smoltz's career as a closer essentially started as a way to rehab his arm, IIRC. call it what you will but it all depends on how you define "rehabilitation". he will still be recovering from his surgery in 2007 but i highly doubt the cubs or any other team would consider him as rehabing. So the week before he made it to Wrigley he was just "working out the kinks" in AAA?
  22. They're not mutually exclusive events.
  23. No pitcher is worth $18 million/7 years. Unfortunately this is where the market has taken them. If that's where the market is, we need to stay out, like Williams did.
