  1. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7053 Very interesting article on BP. I obviously can't post the whole things, but the names mentioned are... Rickie Weeks Dioner Navarro Ryan Zimmerman Ervin Santana Jason Kubel Nate Mcclouth Ian Kinsler Dan Johnson And of course, at the bottom... Other players I want to mention include Rich Hill, Edwin Encarnacion, Stephen Drew, Jayson Werth, Yadier Molina and Wily Mo Pena. For various reasons, these players are strong candidates to improve their performance dramatically in 2008. So what do you think of his list? And who else do you think should be on it?
  2. The reason that Fukudome chose us over the White Sox, who offered more money, is because he'd get to play right field. I don't think he's interested in sliding to center.
  3. Sure, ideally those are the positions you'd look at first. However, an improvement is an improvement and the Cubs are weak enough that it's possible to upgrade in more than those spots. I'd prefer a SS upgrade to anything else, but I'd prefer a 2B upgrade to status quo. It should be noted, that while 2B isn't an obvious need, they still don't have a single everyday 2B on the team. DeRosa is not and has never been an everyday player, let alone an everyday second baseman. DeRosa did appear to tire a bit when he was playing too much. I noted it, and a number of others too. I'd take Roberts, but the back of our rotation is going to be butt-ugly and I'm worried about it. Honestly, I think a Gallagher-Marshall back end would be decent.
  4. Hmmmm...Perhaps a Trade brewing? This is the only possible explanation! I can't wait!
  5. A relief pitcher should never be a sticking point, IMO.
  6. Yes! I'm going to get thrilled about this rumor! Also, I'd assume that would include Pie, making Sam Fuld our starting center fielder.
  7. As easy as it is to make fun of Toronto's chances to make the playoffs, I think they'd probably win the NL Central.
  8. 10:11 odds to win the central? What does that even mean? I'm not huge on gambling, so that makes no sense to me. I thought the second number represented what you put down, and the first represented the multiplier if you were right.
  9. I love Ron Santo, but Mike Scmidt was clearly better.
  10. Iowa finally gets a conference win. Against Michigan State, no less.
  11. I've only been to the 2006 Cubs Convention. Quite frankly, I can't imagine going there every year. Waiting in lines gets old after a little bit.
  12. Just curious...what criteria is used for these rankings? Out of all full-time players that played at least 70 games at 2B in 2007, DeRosa ranked 16th in OPS+. I'd say that's not only near the top 20 but well inside of it. I do agree that Roberts would be an upgrade, but that's certainly not due to DeRosa being bad. Guess I set my hopes too high when expecting an answer to an honest question. Did you actually expect that there was any criteria other than the poster's opinion?
  13. I think it's unfair to say that the Cubs aren't a decent offensive team. And realistically, he very well could hit sixth in our offense.
  14. That doesn't mean that picking up Victor Zambrano would somehow be a smart move. And that is what you're asking, afterall.
  15. -I actually remember Stoney saying this too. It definitely was said. -Aramis has never ever shown a "complete lack of character." The year D-Lee went down, he had one of his best years. -He didn't come back to form last year. He wasn't as good as he was the year before. -The fact that Johnny Peralta strikes out a lot is completely irrelevant to any discussion on how much he'd help the offense become more patient. I think the only guys in the lineup that could really be classified as free swingers are Soriano and Pie. I expect you think D-Lee is a free swinger since he strikes out a lot, though.
  16. Going from .795 to say, .850, would be a dramatic improvement. I don't think that's out of the realm of possibilities at all.
  17. Aramis for Cesar Izturis, if I'm not mistaken. Wait. Seriously?
  18. And so does Joe Morgan, I'm sure. I mean, he's in the broadcast booth. How could he not?
  19. There's no qualifications. It just helps to make arguments that are based on something that's actually observable. Because that's, you know, how arguments are made.
  20. Yes because baseball is played by computers and not humans. No, but baseball is played by batters whose goal is to create runs and pitchers whose goal is to prevent runs from scoring. Rich Hill did the second just fine. So why should anyone care that you deemed his demeanor to be somehow inappropriate? He got the job done. As Keener said, he was one of the top 30 starters in baseball.
  21. Maybe I'm alone, but I'm actually starting to feel optimistic that Cuban has a real shot at this.
  22. Real things are quantified by statistics. If his body language doesn't allow runs I don't really care.
  23. Teams that he would be the best or pretty much as good as their number one starter? Washington (best) Agree Florida (best) Agree Kansas City (best) Agree St. Louis (best) Wainwright Texas (best) Agree Mets (best, assuming Pedro isn't healthy) Very debatable Baltimore (whether Bedard is there or not, they're pretty comparable) Bedard is much better than Lilly San Francisco (We don't really know what to expect from Lincecum right now. He's on the same level as Cain at the moment) No no no no no. Are we talking about Lilly?? Better than Lincecum and Cain?? Pittsburgh (As good as Snell) Disagree Oakland (depending on the health of Harden) Like you said depending. And of course The Cubs. He was probably our best pitcher last year. Now I'd love to hear you tell me the teams he would be the 4th best starter on, since I believe it was you that called him a #4 starter. Seriously, Ted Lilly? He was great last year I agree. But c'mon, 4.46 ERA and 1.33 Career WHIP. You really think he put it together finally at age 31 in his 9th season? Er. That as supposed to be about Hill.
