  2. Hits are more likely to occur by chance while walks are not? I completely disagree. Walks are WAYYYY more about luck than hits are. You get a hit if your a good hitter end of story. You take a walk if the pitcher happens to throw you balls. that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. I find it hilarious that this guy is a baseball coach. HOW IN THE HELL DO HITS OCCUR BECAUSE OF LUCK??!!!! ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?!!!! I'M DONE WITH THIS ****. YOU GUYS HAVE TO BE THE STUPIDEST PEOPLE IVE EVER COME ACROSS. BATTING AVERAGE IS A VERY IMPORTANT STAT WHEN DETERMINING HOW GOOD A HITTER IS. NO ONE HAS A HIGH BATTING AVERAGE BECAUSE OF LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why are you here? All you do is talk about how stupid we are (both here and on cubs.com).
  3. Sorry, its gone now. But it is not correct. Average is very important. There's a reason why that is the 1st stat shown when a player comes up to bat. It shows how good a hitter is. There are other stats that might tell more about a player, but there is no way that average isnt an important stat. You are a very good hitter if you can bat .300 over a season. Hopefully you have some other tools as well besides being a batting average hitter, but having a high average is a good stat to have. The reason average isn't that important is that it can't stand on it's own. If a guy has a .300 average but a (let's say) .320 OBP, he is not a good offensive player. It doesn't matter that he can hit for high average because overall he's making outs too often because he doesn't get on base in other ways. On the other hand, if a guy has a .240 average but a .370 OBP, he's a pretty good offensive player (might even be very good, depending on how much power he hits for), regardless of the low average. OBP encompasses BA and tells you more about the hitter on top of it. There's really not that much of a reason to look at his BA, other than if you want to evaluate how likely a player is to continue to perform at the level he has previously exhibited. In other words, you might want to look at it to see if a given player's OBP is highly batting average dependent, because if it is, without getting too far into detail about stuff like BABIP, it's probably less repeatable, particularly as the player ages. If a guy hits .240 hes a terrible hitter regardless of his OBP. Hits are better than walks. Hits can get you more than one base, and can actually drive in runs. Id rather have the .300 .320 guy, but it depends on his power and speed too. You'd sacrifice 50 points of OBP for a nifty looking batting average?
  4. When are you going to remove my correct analysis from your signature?
  5. I don't care about the steroids. I loved Bret Boone.
  6. Cintron = Izturis There you go. well cintron would = izturis if the plan is to start him. i'm thinking more along the lines of "first pinch-hitter every game regardless of situation" If Cedeno goes somewhere in a trade, and Theriot starts out with a thud, what do you think is gonna happen? Marquis for Derek Jeter?
  7. Cintron = Izturis There you go. well cintron would = izturis if the plan is to start him. i'm thinking more along the lines of "first pinch-hitter every game regardless of situation" You can do that because he's a switch-hitter, dude.
  8. Yeah, now I'm convinced Roberts is coming. And it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Cintron start quite a few games.
  9. http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/02/16/the-only-pavano-post-of-the-spring-promise/ Carl Pavano is in camp. He has to be because he’s on the 40-man roster. The Yankees asked him to accept a payoff on the final year of his deal then take a minor-league contract and he refused. Pavano had surgery last June and almost certainly won’t be ready to pitch until 2009. He’ll be somebody else’s problem then. To say Pavano is a pariah is an understatement. He asked one of the clubhouse kids for a small box today to store some things he had in his locker. The kid went over to a garbage pail, fished out an orange Nike shoebox, dumped a half-eated sandwich out of it and handed it to Pavano. None the wiser, the “American Idle” (as the Post calls him), put it in his locker. When the clubbies hand you garbage, that’s a sign your team has had enough of you. Carl Pavano; Livin' the dream.
  10. http://letsgotribe.com/story/2008/2/14/15219/0500#commenttop I know he's probably going to be a Yankee, but it'd be nice if the Cubs made a run. I wonder if he'll be available at the deadline...
  11. fixed Yeah. I was actually going to type that exact statement but changed it in fear that people would self-destruct at the realization that Roberts probably isn't coming. http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/thumb/b/b1/Exds.jpg/250px-Exds.jpg
  12. I've made someone's signature for saying that batting average and speed aren't important. I'm so happy!
  13. Stephen Drew, Julio Lugo, Yuniesky Betancourt, Felipe Lopez, Jack Wilson, Jason Bartlett, Adam Everett, and of course, Khalil Greene You sure? Yes I am, I'd take Theriot over Wilson, Bartlett, Everett for sure. That still leaves Theriot top 20. And still leaves Greene as much better, so I guess it doesn't really matter.
  14. Stephen Drew, Julio Lugo, Yuniesky Betancourt, Felipe Lopez, Jack Wilson, Jason Bartlett, Adam Everett, and of course, Khalil Greene You sure?
  15. Being the 14th best shortstop in the league is much better than being the 25th-30th best shortstop in the league.
  16. Ah, the marketplace of ideas.... If you want to get into a debate about whether John Mabry is better than Albert Pujols, you're welcome to. You're still going to get laughed at for arguing something that's so obviously wrong.
  17. And Greene's power and top shelf defense wouldn't make our team better? Can you explain why youd rather have: Below Average at position offense/Adequate defense at SS with Good offense and above average D at 2B vs. Above average at position offense/Very Good defense at SS with Good offense and average D at 2B? How are you judging below average and above average? I'll turn to fantasy baseball because they take into account every hit and aspect to a players offensive game. I would say both players are average to below average at their position offensively. The only think Greene brings is power. Whereas Theriot brings speed. Plus Greene has better defense. You're using fantasy baseball to judge the relative worth of a player? The same type of system that values a HR as much as a SB?? No i'm not. I just used fantasy baseball to compare a players offensive ranking with another player in the same positions offensive ranking. And I use a points based league, where HRs are worth 4 points, and SBs are worth 2. Greene and Theriot are right next to eachother towards the middle to lower half. So basically, because they are right next to each other in your fantasy league you came up with this conclusion? Seriously? You would rather have Theriot at SS than Greene right now? The only conclusion that I came across when looking at the fantasy baseball numbers is that Greene and Theriot are very comparable offensively when it comes to their ranking among the other shortstops. Well your conclusion is just wrong and there's absolutely no debate about it.
  18. And Greene's power and top shelf defense wouldn't make our team better? That might work if SB with worth .25, or HR were worth 15. Otherwise it's a terrible way to compare them. Greene is MUCH better. Theriot isn't below average, he's terrible. He can steal 100 bases and that won't change.
  19. And Greene's power and top shelf defense wouldn't make our team better? He would make us better, but I think Roberts would make us even more better. I dont think we need a low average, low OBP, low in the batting order HR guy on this team. I think we need a High average, high obp, lots of speed top of the order guy. Average and speed are basically unimportant.
  20. I'm eagerly anticipating another post on cubs.com about how stupid we are.
  21. Yeah it was fun. Now were they all solo shots? I'm sure they were. If he was batting 5th then those 3 HR's would probably net him 7 RBI that game. Instead he probably got 4. Or they could've just as easily netted him the exact same amount of RBIs! Wowowowowow!
  22. And the broken record skips again. One more time: 1. Leadoff is not a position. 2. You don't know what Hendry wants any more than any other fan. Ok leadoff might not be a position, but it is still something you need to focus on when building your team. You need a leadoff hitter on your team just like you need a 2B. We have no leadoff hitters, so getting a leadoff hitter should be a top priority. Who cares if it is a position or not! It is a position in the batting order! No you don't! Would the Cubs score more runs with Brian Roberts leading off or Chase Utley? You want to have good players and then sort them out. This is the argument that was used for the wonderful Juan Pierre. You are obviously just a baseball fan. I am a baseball coach. It has been researched for years. Different spots in the order serve different purposes. Of course the Cubs would probably score more runs with Chase Utley batting leadoff rather than Roberts because he has a higher OBP. BUT, if you have Chase Utley on your team, you wouldn't bat him leadoff cuz you aren't utilizing his power and rbi potential. A leadoff hitter needs to take pitches, get on base, and be fast. Then the number 2 hitter should be able to control the bat well. Make a lot of contact, very rarely strike out, and place the ball wherever he wants. Then the number 3-4-5 hitters need to have power and drive those 2 guys in. This is the typical way the batting order should be structured. Soriano hit a ton of solo HR's last year. If he batted after Roberts, then a lot of those solo HR's would turn into 2 run shots. If roberts gets a single then soriano hits a HR we have two runs. If Soriano hits a HR then Roberts singles, we still only have 1 run. You can't just put anyone at leadoff. We're not worthy.
  23. By you! Over and over! I'm not even reading the rest of the post, this is just getting annoying.
