  1. he's two years from free agency and already headed for a big arbitration payday and whether pirates fans like it or not, won't be part of their next championship. Hendry needs to get creative and sign a great player in his prime in a need position.
  2. he did invent the word dude, however.
  3. we try to ignore the stupidity part of the article.
  4. Just 5 days until the Vols' redemption! This is truly the best time of the year. go Bears!
  5. go Aggies! UNC is usually pretty darn good though. We always seem to pick it up and play well against the better teams while suffering letdowns against the teams that aren't as good (with the exception of Sac State). Hopefully I will be able to attend all 5 home games this year. is there much tailgating? :D

  7. This a complete mischaracterization. Signing the players you describe is not high-risk because you aren't spending significant resources to obtain them. They are high-reward low risk signings. That's a good thing. You have a potentially high return on a small loss risk. The other signings, Bynum, Mabry etc are not high risk either. They are just bad moves. A high risk move would be signing a big name pitcher to a long term expensive contract (keeping in mind that expensive has to be in the context of your available resources). To me, the correct Cubs approach at this point needs to be to develop pitchers and pay for hitters. They must shell out for the Lee's and Ramirez's and Soriano's because they cannot develop these players on their own. Furthermore, hitters have far smaller risk of injury than pitchers and have far more predictable results. The idea of signing pitching, pitching and more pitchings is not sound. No matter how many people say it, this game is not about pitching and defense alone. You can't win 0-0.
  8. Those aren't moves that win you a championship. Who knows how many years are left in the window of opportunity for the Pujols/Rolen/Carpenter core? those moves smack of playoff failure panic. boy, if we just had one more guy to make outs . . .
  9. While, I can't argue with the Cubs being the biggest disappointment in baseball, I have to go with Cleveland as baseball's biggest disappointment, and here's why: Their talent level, is much higher then the Cubs (eveyrbody knew before the season, Hendry buiilt a 4th/5th place team), at a lower cost. They were predicted by most pundits to be the serious threat to the White Sox, not the Tigers or the Twins, and the Indians failed miserably. So, I will say the Indians have been a bigger disappointment. Agreed for the same reasons you stated. I would put the Indians first and the Cubs second on the list of biggest disappointments. angels, red sox, braves, phillies - all bigger disappointments than the cubs I think. probably the astros too and in some sense the cardinals. the brewers were quite a flop too though they seemed more like a trendy pick.
  10. now its matt cain versus the reds - go Reds! Stupid rain!
  11. Im going to go out on a limb and say, the Twins will win the world series if Liriano comes back, and pitches the way he did before he went on the DL. Too, many, commas. No doubt Liriano would have won the award if he stayed healthy. From a WS perspective, it's nice not facing him, but as a baseball fan I want him out there. The Sox would only face him in the regular season of course. your boys need a win today - although there is a long way to go still.
  12. there will be a lot of rich lawyers anyway . . .
  13. jeter's going to win. and while he might not be most deserving, at least he has a good argument. certainly better than ichiro did. vance you should post obp since that is the most important offensive stat - and you have to consider defense. what jeter and mauer provide defensively certainly makes up a lot of ground on ortiz, manny (who is essentially a DH), and hafner. Dye is a good defender. he won't win due to Ozzie's mouth.
  14. they teach clutch hitting well down in Georgia - and just what the heck is timely defense? Sounds like a couple of areas the Cubs definitely need to address in the off-season. Cesar Izturis might knock in a lot of runs with his glove, but I'm not sure he's "timely". they need more georgians - like jody davis . . . and corey patterson.
  15. santana should an will win. liriano would have had a great shot had he pitched the whole season. veerlander does not exist and verlander isn't quite there.
  16. that's the "it was a dark and stormy night" of sports writing right there.
  17. I couldn't even continue reading after the first paragraph. they teach clutch hitting well down in Georgia - and just what the heck is timely defense?
  18. the yankees are hated more for winning all the time than they are for their spending. no one would care how much they spent if they never won. that and for their oversized bandwagon.
  19. you can't do better than gwynn in RF? Prime Sosa is monstrously better than Gwynn.
  20. this goes beyond obp - dusty and jim just don't value outs. they give them away with sacrifices, caught stealings etc. there is a complete lack of understanding of how teams score runs.
  21. I'm just frustrated, because not only is it idiotic, it contradicts what he says about his pitchers giving up walks. It's one thing to be stupid, it's another to be stupid and ignorant. the explanation is dusty thinks walks are entirely controlled by the pitcher. hitters have no say in whether they walk or not - only the pitchers. yes, I am serious.
  22. if maddux had been called up with baker as manager, he never would have had a career.
  23. Well, when you bid against yourself, this is possible. Hendry is developing quite the reputation for this. I'm sure those skills will be put to use this offseason. If I were Freddie Gonzalez, I might as for $7 million/yr to manage the Cubs because I might just get it... I suspect Fredi will be happy to get a manager's job and not ask for too much. with the extra money, Hendry can sign julian tavarez.
  24. Come on, you know Hendry's m.o of overpaying for mediocrity isn't just confined to players. I can't wait to see Pierre's contract next year.... better yet, yes I can wait. Anything over 1 year is a mistake for Pierre. a one year deal wouldn't bother me too much. there are worse cf options - like bynum.
  25. I think they prefer the term "dinosaurs"
