  1. there really are two discussions here: One is the last two weeks of cubs "baseball" and the other is the overall signings. While its true that those three can't be singled out for causing the losing streaks, that in no way makes their signings less bad. I think you need to park adjust the numbers when comparing Giles. My feeling is that Giles would provide a significant obp upgrade and probably be similar power wise (although historically giles has had better power as well. When you start to look at the last couple weeks, and this really got ugly in the brewers series, the cubs have been exposed. They are sadly lacking in baserunners and power - the two things that produce runs. You can run numbers and point fingers at whoever you want, but the bottom line is the cubs don't have enough good hitters. Murton is a nice role player but his production is not sufficient for LF. so you can probably live with that if you have power in RF. Basically the same logic applies to Jones. Then you have CF - the blackhole. You have Walker who is a good hitter at 2b but mediocre at best at 1b. Cedeno is a good enough hitting SS given his defensive abilities but not a top of the order hitter. Ramirez has been awful. Basically this team has a bunch of role players that would fit in nicely with 3 or 4 great hitters and that's not going to get it done. the only way an offense with so little power scores runs is to have guys all over the bases - the cubs have the opposite.
  2. how cool would it be if he just blew out the knee and retired at 713?

    Cubs

Are they really this bad? I mean this has gotten ridiculous. They aren't even close to winning games.
  4. Even as horrendous as the offense has been, our pitching has not kept us in games. We lost 14 of 16. In those 14 losses, our pitching has been giving up more then 6 runs in 10 of them (16, 9, 8, 6, 6, 8, 6, 9, 10, and 9) for an average of 8.7 runs in those losses. Even with a better offense, we would expect to lose all or most of the. Add in the 5-1 loss in Arizona and our pitching has only kept us in 3 games. Add in Dempster’s blown save yesterday and you are down to the 2 1-run games in San Diego that could be considered winnable. So even though the offense was weak, we weren’t really in many games where a higher OBP would have mattered. Our pitching has been terrible. The offense just made it more lopsided. but help is coming for the pitching staff.
  5. [expletive] you pettitte and [expletive] you rockies.
  6. not unless his contract extension is written on pink paper . . .
  7. patterson is hitting 280 this year so more proof it actually wasant him, it was this teams management huh? Patterson was terrible last year - how could it not be him?
  8. He isn't used in a platoon situation. He has almost 100 plate appearances against right handers. From a quick count he's started 31 of 36 games, and saw at least 1 at bat in 3 others. So he's played in every game but 2. He is struggling as is the team, so there is nothing wrong with giving him a couple of days off. Rational statements like that aren't appreciated around here! oh, the sarcastic rip on other posters! Original! irony intended.
  9. time for a new front page article?
  10. this just in, bonds is done. yea, I'll probably eat that - but the guy definitely cannot play outfield anymore.
  11. fixed. sounds like he's developing acne.
  12. eom
  13. its not frickin' funny! :D
  14. but it is a positive Jones thread. I mean he is better than average for the NL. that was the whole point and people are still mad. i just dont get it. Did you actually calc the average? Seems to me you said he was better than median, not better than average. and why should we ignore his numbers against lefties when evaluating him?
  15. yea, too bad the whole frickin' team sucks.
  16. Shouldn't he be playing second base? I won't even bother to look up his career splits.
  17. if you want a positive thread, why not post "Jones doing much better" or "Jones ripping righties" instead of one that calls out other posters? Wouldn't that be more positive?
  18. I just figured all the Dusty haters would say that Dusty somehow overworked Mitre while he was on the Cubs. have you read the documentation of how wood and prior were abused? Because a comparison to mitre makes no sense. There are dusty haters but there is also reality - and that reality is that prior and wood were abused and now they are injured. pitchers do get hurt without being abused but that doesn't justify their abuse.
  19. don't know - but I do know that the long record of abuse by dusty is not present for mitre as it is for wood and prior.
  20. whatever, you started this thread to try and embarass other posters. Jones is doing about what was expected of him and its not sufficient. He needs to be platooned.
  21. and you should care what number you use because they are different and tell you different things.
  22. You think Dusty actually uses OPS as a stat to evaluate players? OK, .253 avg and .333 slugging. I don't care which number you use or if it's Billy Beane or Dusty, Murton is not hitting righties well. Yet he still gets the bulk of the playing time in left. name the better option? obviously platooning jones and murton would be great, so who plays rightfield? The fact that Murton isn't hitting righties for power does not justify benching him to get any of the gawdawful cubs bench players in the game.
  23. how would it be dusty's fault?
