    That's because he rarely steps inside the three-point arc. Same reason Ryne Smith didn't get to the line much. Of course, Stephens is bigger and more athletic than Smith, so you'd like to think they'd get him into the offense a little more other than just throwing up threes.

    I should add, this is the fifth year we've had this setup in our league. This means a lot of guys who have been kept on rosters since we started having keepers are going back into the draft for the first time next season. Longoria, Hernandez, Braun, Tulowitzki, Wright, etc. all re-enter the draft after this season, so there could be a lot of negotiation for draft picks.

    It is, but it keeps people engaged, especially in the offseason. I've been able to sell high for better draft picks a couple times. My team is horrible this season, but I have a really good trade chip in Longoria. He's worthless to me after this season, since he's been on my roster for five years. One of the guys battling for first is really deep at OF but could use an upgrade at 3B for the remainder of this season, and he's willing to deal a potential keeper for Longoria. Puig and Wil Myers are two that he's discussed a willingness to deal.

    We can trade picks in one of my leagues. It's a 5x5 keeper league, where you can keep up to five players per season. You can hang onto a keeper for up to five years, and if you trade a player, their "contract" goes with them. For example, if I've had Ellsbury for two seasons as a keeper and I deal him, the team that acquires him can only keep him for three more seasons. Also, for each player you keep, you lose a pick off the front of the draft, so if you keep three players, you lose your first three picks. When trading draft picks, you are not allowed to acquire someone's pick in what would amount to a "keeper" round for you. For example, if you are keeping three players, you are not allowed to trade for anyone else's first, second, or third round picks. Similarly, they can't trade any of their "keeper" round picks away. Also, the amount of picks you are sending away must equal the amount you get back.

    While his SLG for the year isn't all that impressive, his turnaround has included an increase in power. He's slugging .537 in his last 56 games.

    He has 12 extra base hits (5 doubles, 7 homers) in his last 9 games. He has also fanned 12 times in 39 plate appearances during that span. But still, a .432/.462/1.135 line over that time is still eye-popping.

    Heading out to Phoenix for the games against the Dodgers (Thursday) and White Sox (Friday) and then driving to Vegas for the game there on Saturday. I haven't been to Spring Training since 2008, so I'm looking forward to this trip.

    Should we plan on winning 10 more games based on Rizzo playing 1B for a whole season instead of Rizzo and LaHair last year? No. And he never suggested as much, but you seem to think his wording implies a lot more than it actually does. Thank you. And I see that neely edited his post a bit to acknowledge this somewhat. I'm not really trying to imply anything other than what I explicitly stated. Rizzo at an .850 OPS with ~95% of the playing time would be a decent improvement over 2012, even with lousy production from the backups in the remaining 12 or so games. You aren't always going to be able to find significant improvement at each position, but that doesn't mean we should ignore small improvements in several areas when they can be found.

    Like I said, it would take a disastrous 12 or so starts to drag it down. Is that possible? Of course. It's also possible someone hits .320 with a handful of doubles in that time. Assume that in those 12 games they get the same lousy rate of production they got from Baker this year in 20 games at first base (a .577 OPS). That would lower the OPS from that position from .850 to roughly .833, which is still a decent improvement over the sub-.800 OPS they got in 2012 from the position. Really, you feel .037 points of ops for an entire season is a game changer? I never used those words. I said it's a decent improvement. (I bolded it above for your reading pleasure.) When you factor in that Rizzo is much better defensively than the statue that was LaHair, then I think you do have a pretty decent improvement at that position. Even small improvements here and there can add up.
