  1. I agree, it's very dumb. I'm guessing if none of that happened before, then the SBs would have been viewed as annoying, but they wouldn't throw at him again. I'm guessing that was the final straw, like when spouses fight about the dishes but it has very little to do with the actual dishes. Fair enough.
  2. According to Wes Helms, Morgan stealing those bases means that Morgan doesn't "play the game right or play for the integrity of the game". Wes Helms is apparently an idiot. I think they were pissed about the stuff that led up to that. And they are justified in being pissed about those things and even about how he acted toward the crowd after the fight. But to piss and moan about the stolen bases is stupid. Edited to add: Helms specifically mentioned the stolen bases when ranting about Morgan. That's pretty much what I was referring to.

  4. It was the FOURTH inning and his team was losing. He got himself not only into scoring position, but 90 feet away from home plate. Could have scored on a passed ball, wild pitch, base hit, etc. You can't expect to chip into a lead without scoring runs.
  5. Jeff Baker says hi. He's certainly hitting lefties well, but I had no idea just how bad he's been against right-handers. .069/.129/.069 for a whopping .198 OPS in 62 plate appearances That's ridiculously bad.
  6. No, but Fergie scares the [expletive] out of me.
  7. I don't think anyone's defending his actions, but they got him in the 4th. They had also hit two other Nats players. Why throw behind him again in the 6th?
  8. A tip for all you youngsters out there...when you're down by a lot early in the game, don't hustle on the bases or try to chip away at that lead, even if there are still five innings to play. Stone voice> I could understand if this happened in the eighth or ninth inning, but it was the fourth inning. Do they really expect the Nats to concede victory at that point?
  9. I have never understood why the Cubs pitching staff continually walks more batters than other teams. Is it a Rothschild thing? I understand that usually "power arms" will walk more batters, but seriously... throw a freaking strike once in a while. The past couple years, it's simply been a Marmol thing.
  10. I used B-R, so my WAR numbers are a bit different, but... Bonds 85.2 Griffey 65.9 Bagwell 59.6 Thomas 54.3 Biggio 51.7 Larkin 51.7 Martinez 49.4 Palmeiro 48.1 McGwire 47.0 Lofton 45.9 Ventura 45.4 Piazza 43.2 Alomar 43.0 Walker 42.6 Knoblauch 41.3 Henderson 40.4 Olerud 39.8 Williams 39.2 Belle 36.9 Grace 36.8 I-Rod 35.8 I've italicized the ones left off the ESPN list. Even Lankford, Phillips, and Jay Bell topped a 35 in WAR.
  11. Definitely. He was certainly hurt by the guys batting in front of him.
  12. 2005 DLee He was first in batting average, second in homers, and seventh in RBI. He needed five home runs and 21 RBI to tie for the lead in those categories. I wouldn't call that close.
  13. Maybe Dusty Baker hasn't accepted that extension from the Reds yet because he's waiting to see if he's being considered for the Cubs' job. :stickman:
  14. Gamel's OPSing over .920 in AAA this season. I think it's safe to say he's liking a lot of the pitching he's facing.
  15. The Nationals don't need the fans turning on Strasburg because of a [expletive] in the booth. They have way too much money on the line for that. Exactly. With Strasburg, Storen, Zimmerman (both Ryan and Jordan), Harper, etc., you'd think they would want someone in the booth that can actually help rally the fans around this team.
  16. Hopefully, these types of comments by Dibble will hasten his departure from the Nationals' broadcast booth. I would actually watch more of their games (other than the games Strasburg pitches) if I didn't have to listen to Dibble.
  17. In what spot in the batting order does a player have that many sacrifices? I believe the last time that happened was in 1990 and 1991 when Jay Bell, primarily batting second for the Pirates, was laying down bunts like it was going out of style. Leyland had him sacrifice 39 times in 1990 (17 times in the first inning!!!) and 30 times in 1991 (15 times in the first inning).
  18. Perhaps if Dibble would have actually listened to his arm when it was telling him something wasn't right instead of pushing it beyond it's limits, he could have pitched effectively after the age of 28.
  19. You are completely ignoring the fact that guys like Howard and Dunn actually get on base, as well. It's not like they're either hitting a home run or making an out. Howard has a career OBP north of .370, while Dunn is over .380. The thing that these guys do well is not give in to the pitcher.
  20. The fact that many people here are realistic about what we can possibly expect from Colvin doesn't mean the majority of Cubs fans think that way. Well obviously some fans will overrate him. Same is true of anyone really. It just sounds odd to hear someone say his offensive skills are overrated when all you ever hear around here is how much the guy sucks. The bolded/underlined part is what I'm getting at. What you hear around here doesn't necessarily mirror the opinion of the majority of Cubs fans. Read comments by Cubs fans on other sites, and it's somewhat easy to see that there's no shortage of people who think Colvin is fantastic.

  22. Why the hell is Hill still getting starts? Get Castillo some at-bats.
  23. Thanks. I think Castillo/Chirinos/Clevenger/et al. could put up numbers at or slightly above that range for catcher...but, wow would that be painful for the offense. True. If Soto is moved to first, then you have to make up for the lost offense at catcher. I'm really curious to see what Chirinos can do. I realize he's old for a prospect, but his numbers this season (and even last year) have been very, very impressive.
  24. Out of curiosity, where did you get those numbers? I'm curious about what the rate stats for catchers look like. Got them here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/split.cgi?t=b&year=2010&lg=MLB#defp The rate stats for catchers this season: .249/.321/.382/.703 I completely agree that his offensive abilities have a lot more value as a C than as a 1B. But if he can post a .900+ OPS, he wouldn't kill the Cubs at 1B.
  25. Ankiel started making the transition from pitcher to hitter at a much younger age.
