  1. Didn't Atkins just start yesterday?
  2. I have no arguments with how Colvin has been handled up to this point in the season as far as playing time is concerned, but he certainly is hitting the bejesus out of the ball.
  3. Santo sounds like he's being physically tortured every time the Cubs make an error.
  4. Pat Hughes seems to think Lou saw something wrong with Silva when he went to take the mound in the 7th. Apparently, there was some sort of injury, as they're saying Howry got more than the normal eight warm-up pitches. He was injured the inning before. I'm not justifying Lou's actions...just saying what they're talking about on the radio. If Silva was injured prior to the at-bat, and Lou let him hit anyway, he's dumber than I thought.

  6. True enough, but the Angels have expressed interest in Nady and if you can land anything in excess of what you'd have to pay for Spilborghs then why not? I've always liked Spilborghs and so far this year he's been pretty good even against righties. Obviously a lot can change between now and the trade deadline, but why would a team that's two games over .500 and only 4.5 back in their division want to deal someone that can play all three OF positions (although he would be better off sticking to the corners), can hit for decent average and power, and isn't making an absurd amount of money?
  7. The thing that makes this a real problem is that his OBP coming into today's game was .313. If his OBP was .387 and his slugging was .359 (just like his 2008 numbers), then you're at least getting some value out of his. As it is now, he's not getting on base and he's not hitting for any extra-base power whatsoever.
  8. I think it's completely absurd but would be enjoyable for me from a personal standpoint. Outside of being able to combine a trip up to see the in-laws with catching a Purdue game at Rutgers, I have no interest in seeing Rutgers join the conference.
  9. Cameron isn't terrible when it comes to taking walks, with a career walk rate of 11.1%. Even Floyd was at 9.9% for his career. Vitters is at 3.6% in his minor league career, with a K rate of 15.8%. When it comes to strikeouts and walks, Howie Kendrick (3.6% BB rate, 16.2% K rate) is a better comparison. Kendrick's minor league numbers were much better than Vitters' though.
  10. He's pitched six consecutive games in relief. The last five have been scoreless. He gave up one earned in one inning in the first relief appearance.
  11. Does that mean Jeff is safe? I think he's having flashbacks to 1998: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/steveda01.shtml
  12. CUBS are 1,203-1,082 (0.526) vs Philadelphia. 1876 thru 2009 World Series team W L pct PA W L Chicago Cubs 10165 9606 0.514 16 2 8 Philadelphia Phillies 9008 10168 0.470 12 2 5 The Philadelphia Phillies have lost more games than ANY professional sports franchise. Go CUBS !! I bet you remember that first Phillies loss like it was yesterday.
  13. Santo sounds like this is literally causing him physical pain.
  14. I'm not sure what's funnier: the fact that they're going to lead him off or the graphic that lists him as a Milwaukee Brewer while wearing a Nationals' hat, despite the fact that he plays for Baltimore.
  15. How have the Cubs had a hole at second base for "some time"? While it might not be the same player every year, they've had decent production from the position relative to the rest of the league for the past decade. Only twice in the past 10 years have the Cubs received below average production* from second base: 2001 and 2009. *This is production measured against other second basemen, not against all offensive players.
  16. I want nothing to do with Rutgers.
  17. Correct. I don't think that's the case. Yes, it is. A pitcher can be charged with earned runs that are unearned to the team. Let's say that I start the inning and retire the first two batters. The next guy reaches on a error, which would have been the third out. I proceed to give up a two-run homer to the following hitter. Those two runs are unearned to me and to the team, since there should have already been three outs. Now, the manager takes me out and puts you in. Even though the team in still in "unearned run mode" for the remainder of the inning, you don't inherit that luxury. For you, it's a clean slate. Therefore, any run you surrender could potentially be earned to you but unearned to the team (depending, of course, on how those runs score off of you). 18. That's lunacy. Exactly. I'm very happy he came back for his senior season. Just need to keep Hummel healthy for an entire season now.
  19. His line is actually: 2-3, 2.48 ERA, 29 IP, 7 BB, 20 K. The red flag, of course, would be the five homers he's surrendered so far.
  20. The big east already stretches in a big triangle from Wisconsin to Florida and back up to New England. Adding Texas to the Big 10 really wouldn't be unprecedented. To be fair, that is only in basketball, where the Big East adds a bunch of non-football schools. Seton Hall football: undefeated since 1981.
  21. You beat me to it.
