  1. I was talking about offense. The Cubs production from centerfield was third in baseball by OPS, behind New York and Cleveland. That's Carlos Beltran and Grady Sizemore and we were the highest by OBP. I was speaking in generalizations not absolute quantities. When do I speak in absolute quantities without posting a number with fifteen decimal places? Never? Really the only way we equal that production in center is by acquiring either Sizemore or Beltran - the only two centerfielders in baseball you can say with a straight face that they will OPS over 850. Josh Hamilton probably will and Curtis Granderson might.
  2. I can explain that ... contract year. He was non-tendered. Yep.
  3. I can explain that ... contract year. No.
  4. Vandy is up 13-7 now on BC.
  5. Wow, he nearly made that 58 yard field goal.
  6. 3rd and 9 with less than three minutes left and they run McCoy to lose the game.
  7. Not one of those replacements is accurate in expected roles, so your notion of downgrading across the board is wrong. Replace Wood with Marmol at closer (even). Replace Howry with Gregg at set-up (even). Replace Edmonds with Fukudome in CF (moderate downgrade). Replace Fukudome with Bradley in RF (notable upgrade). Replace Marquis with Marshall at 5th starter (slight upgrade). Replace DeRosa with Fontenot at 2B (slight downgrade). Replace Fontenot with Miles on bench (slight downgrade). Replace Jon Lieber with Vizcaino in relief (moderate downgrade). That's how I see it. who replaces marmol? fukudome replaces fukudome and bradley replaces edmonds.
  8. the other guys we got throw hard and don't have exceptional command. thats another reason you wouldnt think this is linked to a peavy deal. the padres and towers have always had a fascination for young finesse pitchers - whether it be in the draft or trades. david huff was a local product and a guy that the padres scouted heavily before the 06 draft and they probably would have nabbed him with their second round pick isntead of Wade BeLanc (who is similar) if Antonetti and the Indians didn't take him force. Control-allergic pitching isn't something Towers has ever been associated with. It's hard to believe that he would want any of these players. If we traded DeRosa for Huff, then the precursor to a Peavy deal would be believable. Hendry doesn't care for finesse projects and has a fascination for power pitching prospects. That's why we got these three. Peavy has nothing to do with this move.
  9. and tonight we have LSU vs Georgia Tech. Who throws more TD passes for Georgia Tech. Jarrett Lee or Josh Nesbitt.
  10. BC versus Vandy isn't offering much more. It's 7-6 in the third.
  11. hes throwing a bit harder these days and his breaking ball has developed into a plus pitch when he decides to control it, which isn't very often.
  12. The Village People still exist?
  13. AAA to be technically correct....but then again japanese pitchers with above average fastballs have had no problem adjusting to the majors the last six or seven years, except they've more or less equaled or bettered their unadjusted lines in japan. why would fujikawa be different? does a 91-94 MPH fastball with plus command, a plus-plus forkball that's better than sasaki's and a borderline plus slider not translate to the american game where US hitters can't hit a forkball?
  14. Leadoff is Soriano's best position because that is where he is best suited. Leadoff is not where Miles is best suited. That's my point.
  15. You really cannot make a case either way offensively. Cedeno is significantly worse offensively. Sure you can. It's called ability versus production. Cedeno has not yet hit at the major league level consistently, but his outstanding success in AAA does make a good argument that he is better than what he's done thus far at the major league level. And he doesn't have to do all that much better to top Miles career 79 OPS+. In fact, only for one season in his career has Aaron Miles been noticeably better than what Cedeno did last season. Just once. At this point Cedeno's probably a .240s EqA hitter and Miles is much of the same. I'm not saying that the argument is right or wrong. I'm saying that it exists and is a perfectly fine one. I say the two of them are a tossup, but Cedeno's got more upside is younger and cheaper as well as better defensively so I'll take him. He has the ability to push out Theriot for starting SS. Miles doesn't.
  16. it doesnt mean anything when you include defense something Neifi was very good at and miles isn't good at. even neifi slugged .480 in coors. miles didnt slugged .400 in colorado.
  17. over the course of 350 PAs and tons of innings of worse defense play how much of an upgrade is he over ronny cedeno on offense? a couple runs here and there? Aaron Miles also spent time sucking in Coors, Cedeno did not. I am not saying Cedeno is better on offense, you can make a case either way on that argument. I am saying that Cedeno is better than him on defense and that the difference between Cedeno and Miles overall over the course of a season backing up players is a few runs at best and that's not worth five mil considering Cedeno doesn't appear to be going anywhere.
  18. when hes out there yes. when he's out there he usually ruptures his vag.
  19. It's not contradictory. Do you think that Mark DeRosa himself will hit .300/.380/.460 again? He's 34 and has done that once in his career. I'd bet no on that one.
  20. actually i was thinking "new york" more than anything. my point was more or less is that there are teams out there looking for pitching like lowe, whether it be the mets or yankees. are there teams out there looking at corner OFs? Because there doesn't appear to be any big players for pat burrell, adam dunn or, outside of us, milton bradley. not to mention manny ramirez... raul ibanez signed, but he was the cheapest of the four, probably, and went to a major market team (though philly doesnt have a tone of money laying around).
  21. well the uncertainty surrounding cubs ownership and the economy could have changed the budget significantly in the matter of weeks. that is THE critical part of the equation.
  22. well there was no way we could keep wood. there was a way we could keep derosa and marquis. namely not signing bradley
