  1. I'm guessing a few teams rejected invites, cause there are better teams that didn't make the NIT than that. There's no representation from the power conferences in either of these tournaments. Perhaps they just assume that teams from those conferences wouldn't be interested in a third-rate or fourth-rate tournament. I think they do at least try to contact some of the power conference teams but most reject it. As they should. The larger programs gain nothing by going to a 3rd rate tourney. No fans will come, there is absolutely no press when you win (can anyone tell me who won the first two CBIs?). They are broadcast on something called HDNet. I mean the NIT is a crappy 2nd rate tournament too, but when Michigan is in it I semi-follow it and if they get to MSG I watch the semi's and final's. I don't know if Michigan was actually gonna get invited, but it was reported in the local media that UM was going to turn down a bid to the CBI if they were offered one. It's a $60k guarantee for a home game on the school's dime, so many schools will accept on the condition that they only play road games. And most bigger schools aren't going to want to do that.
  2. Anyone know a good place online to buy a US soccer t-shirt? Who are ya designs have a couple of decent ones, but the selection I've seen elsewhere is pretty terrible.
  3. It was far from a hail mary. He was half-way between the halfcourt line and the 3 point line with nobody around him. He probably makes it 15-20% of the time. You play a shred of defense and that shot becomes 2%. One defender was easily taken out of the play on the inbounds screen while the other 4 stood around the basket for no reason. There's no need for more than one or two players inside the arc to defend a long inbounds pass.
  4. The hammer sure came down...
  5. Why. Not just for that foul, for the entire game/season. Northwestern will pay for a CBI bid if they get offered one. Otherwise their season is done.
  6. I remember a time when Northwestern could do something on offense. I think it was January.
  7. Still young. But if they came in with bulk, other teams might actually recruit them.
  8. -Lots of fouls -Awful offense Purdue has 28 FT attempts to Northwestern's 18. 40 combined fouls so far.
  9. It seems like it has been roughly 20 minutes since Northwestern last made a FG.
  10. eh, Moore was fouled on that 3-point attempt (with no call)... but yeah, Hart definitely fouled your guy too... Yeah, there were a couple of missed calls, but they've called the same body contact on both teams the entire half. If it's a typical Big Ten officiated game, though, they'll call nothing in the second half. Not having Mirkovic's passing abilities is killing us. That and 11 turnovers...
  11. The refs have been incredibly consistent on foul calls in the first half aside from a couple of missed calls that they didn't see, yet Purdue's players are stunned every time the whistle blows in Northwestern's favor.
  12. BTN is only doing the evening games today, both with Gus Johnson and Shon Morris.
  13. 11 minutes, 9 turnovers. Desperately need to get Johnson to pick up foul #3.
  14. MLS players voted to strike if a deal isn't reached in the next 2 weeks.
  15. I'll be pretty pissed if we're not in now. 20 wins is usually enough. We were on the outside looking in before today. Too many regular conference champions lost their conference tournaments. NIT selection seems to be rather random, though, so who know.
  16. Northwestern started the game 1 for 14 from 3, went to 2 for 24 early in the 2nd half, but they kept shooting, made a few, and amazingly started to play defense to put away Indiana. This keeps us on the NIT bubble, but may still need to beat Purdue to get an NIT bid.
  17. Michigan State has suspended Chris Allen for their first game in the Big Ten Tournament and could be out longer.
  18. Cause they are not playing the Red Sox in football. I just assumed the bowl committee was only going to pick teams in red or navy uniforms. ESPN decided to put the Capital One Bowl (ABC), Outback Bowl (ESPN), and Gator Bowl (ESPN2) all on at the same time on New Years Day, meaning there will be 3 Big Ten bowl games competing against one another for viewers. An odd decision.
  19. The bowl game at Yankee Stadium is going to be called the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. It will be broadcast on ESPN, so if they're going to obsess over the Yankees, why not just call it the ESPN Wet Dream Bowl?
  20. Awful, yes, but he also had a back injury, groin injury, and the flu. He probably shouldn't have played as much as he did.
  21. Nothing like a stadium full of Brits chanting "USA." He should have had two assists. He played quite well in his brief time in the game. I just finished this great article about Joe Gaetjens. Very interesting read.
  22. I'm afraid to look up whether or not Northwestern has the worst defense in Big Ten history. As Big Ten Stat Geeks put it the other week, watching Northwestern is like watching an NBA All-Star game (with a 35 second shot clock). Good offensive efficiency, but you'll get the defense of a middle school team. What an embarrassing Big Ten season it was.
  23. Nice effort at the end, particularly after having no offensive presence in the first half. If they were only able to breathe on defenders early in the 2nd half, it would have been a better offensive showing.
  24. And yet De Jong gets a simple foul call despite nearly Ramseying (or Eduardoing, whatever you prefer) Stuart Holden. I thought he got carded. Nice goal there. Couldn't tell on the replay if he was onsides. Penalty?! Bah. Just outside the box. Barely.
  25. And it gets even worse in the 59th. Beasley should have had a great chance and yet he gets called for a complete phantom foul. What a ridiculous dive.
