  1. As do I... According to ChicagoBears.com, Metcalf is out and Garza will start in his place. In addition, Azumah is now questionable, but is expected to play. Look like it'll be around 42 with a wind chill of 35 (10-20 mph winds out of the SE) and partly cloudy at kickoff.
  2. I've seen players want to go back onto the football field with broken bones. That doesn't make it a good idea. It doesn't really matter what Kerry wanted at the time. Hendry should have done what was best for Kerry and what was best for the team. And if Wood has to miss the month of April, how do you think that's going to effect his free agent value? It was in his best interest to have the surgery as soon as possible, as well.
  3. I wonder if Hendry ran to check if he included the no-OBP talk clause in Pierre's contract talk.
  4. Instead of seeing questions about this year's team, which I think Dusty would be able to avoid much more easily, I'd love to see someone ask him why Neifi Perez got 382 ABs in the one and two hole last season while putting up a sub-.300 OBP (and a mind-numbingly horrible .263 OBP in the leadoff spot). And then, as a follow up question, ask him if Derrek Lee minded getting robbed of RBI opportunities because of that. Of course, getting up early in the morning to head downtown isn't going to appeal to too many fans who are fed up with the front office and coaching staff.
  5. I'm interested in knowing if those questions are screened. I've never been so I'm not familiar with the proceedure they use. If they are, most of those questions I'm sure won't be asked. Anybody know? No, they're not screened. You just get in line and ask away.
  6. The Trib has a nice flash site up for the 2005 season, including some awesome photos of the Bears roughing up Favre:
  7. That happened to me with a Prior line three years ago (got Patterson) and the Santo line two years ago. Of course, Ron stayed for an extra five or ten minutes, so I was able to get both him and Patterson. That was sweet. Unless there's someone you really, really want, avoid all lines for popular players. You'd have to get in line hours in advance and you're just not going to have a good time if you have to do that. Most people learn from experience, but I'd recommend not even trying. There could be some autograph opportunities if you can catch minor leaguers or younger players leaving their autograph table. After his session last year, Dubois stood around and signed autographs for an extra 15 minutes or so.
  8. If the Cubs win 95 games, it's likely going to be because Zambrano, Prior, and probably Wood carry the team. We'll have to see about the bullpen, but if the offense produces at levels comparable to last year's, I'm not going to be giving any credit for failing to improve the team. With the state the farm system was in a year or two ago and the payroll, having a sub-par offense is not acceptable. EDIT: I should add that I believe the offense was somewhat unlucky last year in terms of having better offensive statistics than the White Sox but failing to score as many runs. The offense may very well score more runs next year, but if they put up similar statistics, I don't think it qualifies as Hendry improving the team.
  9. Looks like Skilling caved in. Forecasts call for a high of 36 on Sunday with moderate winds, but dry conditions.
  10. Peterson had more success against the Panthers last time than Jones. They're different kinds of backs and I'd like to see Peterson get a few more carries this time.
  11. Then how does that explain Gary Carter in an Expos cap and Wade Boggs in a Red Sox cap? No matter what they say about it being the HOF's choice I think since it was almost a toss up they asked Sutter and went with his preference. My most indelible memory of Sutter in a Cards cap is giving up the two dingers to Ryno. His most dominant years were with the Cubs. Neither was close. Boggs played 11 seasons in Boston compared to just 5 with the Yankees and Carter played 12 seasons with Montreal to just 5 with the Mets. And I don't believe the policy was in place when Carter was inducted.
  12. Bye bye remaining dignity, bye bye student support (both sections were packed tonight for some reason), and bye bye long shot at the NIT. Crap that was awful.
  13. Are there any updates? All I heard was that he had a heart attack. And stay, Jeff.
  14. This may be shocking to everyone, but the HOF values post-season performance over just about everything. And the process isn't all that logical.
  15. It's okay to look at your own organization to see where it needs improvements and examine what mistakes it has made in the past. Give it a try sometime, Jim. I know that part really got me. I was going to post something about scapegoating but I didn't want to get into another Patterson is stupid debate. The only adjustments Hendry seems to make are pretty superficial. Going from whatever the heck his philosophy was last year to catching the ball this year doesn't do a whole lot. The only coach that has been let go in the past few years was Wendell Kim and there was a huge push by everyone to get him out. He took away Sarge's title as batting instructor, but in name only. It's about time they start looking at the basics of their organization, from international scouting and minor league promotions to major league instruction and offensive philosophy (and change it to one that doesn't focus on rewarding old guys for being able to cash paychecks).

  17. Makes sense, I suppose. I'd imagine they rank Evanston a tad higher than Lake Forest College. Can't say I've heard of a professional athlete of his caliber going to Kellogg before, though.
  18. My favorite number...ruined again.
  19. The autograph hunt game is right after opening ceremonies. It's basically a bunch of random lines and you don't know who is going to be signing where. They're not top players, though. As for opening ceremonies, I really didn't like it last year. I wouldn't get there 45 minutes early (they closed the doors well before it started because the room was already full) unless I really wanted to boo Hendry and Baker. I didn't really do any autograph lines last year (except for the impromptu Z one) but rather attended some interesting sessions. Down on the farm (although I didn't go last year) and the business session on Sunday are two of the best ones. My other favorite was the one Andy MacPhail had. The room was nearly empty and he talked about some interesting stuff.
  20. I agree about the good field conditions, but you don't think playing with a wind chill in the upper 20s would be an advantage over the Panthers? The Bears have shown they can dominate in very cold conditions. Assuming it was cold in Buffalo in late November, that would be Carolina's only win in cold weather. The wind chill was in the low 40s in New Jersey Sunday and they just don't have much experience playing in the cold. There was an article a little while back that basically said that the Bears really aren't that great in cold weather. Mike Downy also noted that Charlotte's Sunday forecast calls for a low of 32 as it does in the winter anyway. I don't really care as long as we win, which I am arrogantly expecting. I glanced through that article, but I was under the impression that the main reason they haven't been good in "Bear weather" was just because they haven't been good in recent history period. I did read the Downy article, as well, sadly. He kinda neglected to mention the fact that the highs this week in Charlotte are in the mid 60s.

  22. Probably weather.com CBS and NBC backup weather.com. We're getting a warmup for Thursday (near 50), but Skilling seems to be the only one who's saying that temps will rise dramatically again after a quick cooldown. I love Skilling, but I hope he's wrong.
  23. Sutter pitched one more year in Chicago and put up better numbers. The only thing that would get him in as a Cardinals, I'd imagine, would be the '82 world series.
  24. Haha: As for the weather, weather.com went from saying a high of 38 to a high of 32 for Sunday. However, Tom Skilling is saying a high in the upper 40s. Someone's wrong.
  25. Brown, Hillenmeyer, and Kruetz are definitely going to ready. And I'm pretty sure that Ian Scott and Cedric Benson will be good to go. Metcalf is still questionable to the best of my knowledge.
