  1. Sure, but it's a percentage of a much smaller pie. It doesn't make them more of a national school. Yeah, I'm just talking about relative percentage, not total number of graduates.
  2. Then there's no way he's smart enough to get into Northwestern under legit circumstances. I agree with it being a smart campaign that makes perfect sense. It may not be true, but it's a "title" they can make a claim on. You'd be surprised by the number of people who have never heard of Northwestern or at least have no idea where it's located both within the Chicago area and across the country. It's not as bad as Washington University or University of Chicago (minus location), though it's still pretty bad. If you're not from the area and you don't watch any Big Ten sports, there's a pretty decent chance you don't know where Northwestern is located.
  3. Is that not because they are by far the smallest school, and therefore have the smallest group of alumni by default? With just over 8,000 undergrads, it's mostly that. However, Northwestern is a far more national school than any of the other Big Ten schools. Only 40% of undergrads are from the midwest. I don't see how that makes them more of a national school. It's a huge difference. I just looked up Michigan's undergraduate student body for comparison. 66% come from Michigan alone. 40% from the midwest is a really small number. Since most students move back home after graduation, it creates a much higher percentage of Northwestern graduates who are spread out across the country.
  4. They might in the top-half of Chicago-area Big Ten fans. Maybe. For football. I think there are more OSU fans in the city than Northwestern fans. Not to mention Michigan, State, Illinois and Iowa That's my point. There's way too many Big Ten alums in Chicago for anyone to claim that it is "their" city. I know It's an aspiration campaign in one sense, but Northwestern is also the only Big Ten team that actually plays in the Chicago area. It's a campaign to increase attendance. It's a well thought out slogan. Most people don't even think about Northwestern football in the Chicago area. Hell, a lot of people don't even know where Northwestern is located. Many of our current players had never really heard of Northwestern until they started to be recruited. Hell, we have one starting senior DT from the south side who had no idea where Northwestern was located until the coaching staff contacted him. The kid lived his whole life about 20 miles away.

  6. They might in the top-half of Chicago-area Big Ten fans. Maybe. For football. I think there are more OSU fans in the city than Northwestern fans. Not to mention Michigan, State, Illinois and Iowa Northwestern is 10th in number of alumni in Chicago, ahead of only Penn State. The marketing push was desperately needed and the Wrigley game has paid off really well so far. And really, the marketing campaign is also trying to get fans of other Big Ten teams to adopt Northwestern as their 2nd favorite.
  7. Not the best sponsorship for Valspar since it requires a second coat. I assume the landmark status wasn't an issue or they got a waiver since it's only temporary.
  8. Painted it. The marquee gets repainted every so often, so it's not a big deal. Only took about an hour. Plus, they got some sponsorship money out of Valspar to do it.
  9. They just announced it will indeed by set up on the McDonald's parking lot. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_APgDT_vnrdI/TOGFxaw5TlI/AAAAAAAAA0c/zasrFuaFOs8/s400/Wrigley-Purple-Marquee.JPG
  10. Persa ended his season shattering the Big Ten single season completion percentage record by completing 73.5% of his passes. Darrell Bevell previously held the record of 67.8%.
  11. I believe Ohio State @ Iowa is a national broadcast on ABC. VT @ Miami is on ESPN.
  12. Are they gonna be on the field or are they shutting down Waveland or something? I can't imagine the gates will be open that early, how are they gonna get a crowd? Waveland is already being shutdown for "Wildcat Way." Gates don't open until 12:30, so hopefully they'll be able to take over a parking lot across for the marquee or something. I'm waiting to hear the details. Though who knows. Maybe they'll take a chance and open up the outfield for the show.
  13. ESPN announced that Gameday will be at Wrigley Field on Saturday. They've only done one Northwestern game before (1995 vs. Iowa), and that was taped inside because it was too cold out. The move to Wrigley has so far been gold for the NU athletic department. Now they get a 3 hour commercial out of it.
  14. This worries me: http://twitpic.com/36is5q They added padding (and why aren't the leaves fall colors?), but that removed room behind the endzone.
  15. The backup is Evan Watkins. He was pretty highly recruited out of HS, is a big guy (6'6, 230) and has a cannon arm. The problem is, he's not nearly as elusive as Persa despite being pretty quick. It'll be harder for him to buy time in the pocket as he's more of a pro-style QB. Should make for an interesting game next week. He has deceptive speed at 6'6''. He's not necessarily fast, but he is mobile. I'd imagine Illinois is going to bring as much pressure as possible. McCall will have to call for some shorter routes and show faith in Watkins' decision making and ability to see over the line and pass over the middle. But they'll also have to mix in more deep balls to keep them honest. It's the long passes across the field for 5 yards that Persa makes rather easily that worry me with Watkins.
  16. The Cubs are selling some obstructed view seats tomorrow at 10 AM: http://www.tickets.com/wrigleyville_classic/
  17. That goal post on the outfield wall is hilarious. I guess we'll see fans catching footballs out on Sheffield. Northwestern and the Cubs are putting on a whole production on Sheffield for fans before, during, and after the game, including a bunch of TVs, bar areas, etc. They're also advertising an area to catch FGs, though I wonder how they'll handle all the balls that will fly through there during warmups.
  18. It was supposed to be a little more slanted towards CF. Not sure what happened. Here's how it looks today: http://plixi.com/photos/original/56305049
  19. So the OF wall is the back of the end zone? That sounds horribly dangerous Not quite, but close: http://twitpic.com/35lgmw It looks like there's enough room, but perhaps it's too close to the wall for the installation.
  20. There's no goalpost in the east endzone. Instead, they attached uprights to the outfield wall.
  21. This is being denied now, just turned on the radio and they were laughing about how something he said was taken out of context and caused a lot of talk on twitter. It was picked up by some rather reputable blogger and others on Twitter.
  22. ESPN Radio in Dallas is saying the NCAA is going to suspend Cameron Newton in the next few hours.
  23. I can't believe Belcher of all people dropped an easy TD pass on 4th and 10 with 30 seconds to go. Wow.
  24. Rule #1 - Don't believe what Chip Brown has to say. Rule #2 - When in doubt, refer to rule #1. Well, the size of the deal is likely bogus, but the actual agreement seems pretty plausible or even likely.
  25. You'll likely see more tickets hitting the secondary market starting next week when people actually begin to receive the tickets and know exact locations. Probably not a ton, though.
