  1. Well, hopefully Spain will depants Italy this weekend.
  2. Sadly, it's not the mega-shrine that you have in mind. There really hasn't been anything publicly said about Hill. I think allowing him to have more work on the side is probably the correct explanation as to why his start was pushed back until tomorrow.
  3. Hill may not be pitching today, but abuck does have a reason to make his way to PP:
  4. Major league scouts were one of the few allowed in to the empty stands game a few days ago.
  5. He would. And I'd imagine that the Mets would have to eat at least some of that contract if all they want in return is young pitching. However, I don't think the Cubs have the necessary trade chips if they're also going to go after a starter, which will likely be much more important.
  6. To clarify, that's a slightly different argument. I'm certainly not saying to send Marmol out in any and every situation, I didn't want him out there yesterday and definitely wasn't happy when he started the 8th. The original statement regarding Piniella's reckless usage of Marmol was pretty general, though. I'm just saying that it's still reckless independent of Marmol's actual injury risk, precisely because we, nor the Cubs, really have a great idea of how much they can push Marmol before his arms starts to wear down or he loses effectiveness.
  7. He's 3rd overall in pitches thrown in relief work. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/pitching?split=128&league=mlb&season=2008&seasonType=2&sort=pitches&type=pitch3&ageMin=17&ageMax=51&state=0&college=0&country=0&hand=a&pos=all But he doesn't average a huge number of pitches per IP at least. Not even in the top 200 @ 16.5/IP. He has a lot of quick low-stress innings. yet have this thread is dedicated to how Marmol's style of pitching causes high pitch counts A pitches per innings pitched rate is always going to be lower regardless of style when the pitcher is as good as Marmol.
  8. It doesn't look like any other information is available.
  9. I'm not so sure how accurate those comparisons are, but there's nothing like having your two top picks at short compared to Ryan Theriot and David Eckstein. And what exactly does "monster makeup kid" even mean? It seems like such an odd term.
  10. The I-Cubs are pouring it on in the 6th. Pie began the inning with his 4th HR of the season for Iowa and later hit a 2-run single with the bases loaded. 6 runs are in and they're still batting.
  11. Marmol will turn 26 this year. He's not 20 or 21, and he doesn't need to be protected like he's that young. I don't believe he pitched at all in his life before 2003, when he threw 62 innings at Mesa. He wasn't made a starter until 2004. His career as a pitcher is still very young. We probably can't find many comparable players to Marmol in terms of career path and usage pattern, but I wouldn't say there has to be a clearer risk of injury due to how he's currently being used in order to call it reckless. If Piniella continues to use him as much and as often in relatively unimportant situations, Marmol's risk for injury will be unnecessarily increased. How much it will be increased doesn't as much matter from a managerial point of view. The benefit doesn't outweigh the risk, whatever that may be.
  12. Pie's 1st inning RBI double put the I-Cubs up 1-0 and moved his BA up above the Mendoza line.
  13. Reinhard gave up a single and two walks in the first, but got out of it on a 6-2-4-2 DP off a popup to short and out recorded at home.
  14. Iowa dropped game 1 by a score of 3-1.
  15. Murton is attending the funeral of his grandmother. Besides that, it wouldn't make that much sense to have anyone from Iowa join the team in Cooperstown for this game. Iowa played a DH yesterday and they're playing a DH today. They would have been giving up more ABs just to play half a game or so in Cooperstown. In addition, I'm sure travel in and out of Iowa isn't that great right now considering the flooding in Des Moines.
  16. I wonder why they're giving Hill a full week in between starts.
  17. Did you see somewhere that Reinhard is starting for Iowa today? Now I don't believe that it's a day/night DH and Randy Wells is facing Gulin in game 1 right now, but I'd rather see Rich pitch at Iowa than fly to Cooperstown.
  18. It looks like Hill and Wells are the starters for Iowa's DH today, though IowaCubs.com says that Wells will start game 1 coming up in 30 minutes. Condolences to Matt Murton, Jose Ascanio, and their families. Matt left the team to attend his grandmother's funeral, while Ascanio is back in Venezuela following the death of his brother and aunt.
  19. I'm at least a little bit curious to see how Chirinos looks behind the plate.
  20. Ching with a goal. This is beyond ridiculous. 7-0 US. They're making Barbados look like a junior high girls team. EDIT: Ching never actually touched that one. It should be an own goal. But Ching doesn't care. 8-0 now. Unbelievable.
  21. You know it's a mismatch when Eddie Johnson can finish that easily. 6-0 now.
  22. Mastroeni is credited with a goal in the 20th minute to put the US up 3-0, but it looked like it went off Ching.
  23. Ching couldn't finish again, but Bradley does. 2-0 USA after the scramble.
  24. Well Ching is off to a horrible start.
  25. Well that was a quick goal by Dempsey. Nice ball in, but what poor defense by Barbados.
