  1. Edmonds going oppo to tie a game in the 9th for the Cubs. What the heck is going on?
  2. There's a ton of information in this article, so it's hard to quote enough to provide the full picture. However, here are some key points:
  3. Lee is going to pick up Soriano's slack. He's been so bad that once Derrek comes out of his slump, it'll be like getting him back after 5-6 weeks on the DL. The offense should be fine and they need to save their trading chips for a starting pitcher. Minor league splits for 2008: Murton against lefties - .396/.482/.500 Hoffpauir against righties - .279/.283/.535 Hoffpauir simply hasn't played that much this year, so it's hard to tell what you might get with him. He hasn't shown much of an ability to take walks at AAA. His OBP is the primary concern.
  4. Did they get into an accident on the way there?
  5. You can't make a definitive statement about the trade deadline availability of a player like Sabathia on a team like the Indians in mid-June. It's pointless.
  6. Fontenot has the best helmet hair on the team. At least the HBP glanced off Soriano's hand (and into the side of his face) instead of hitting it squarely.
  7. The I-Cubs have a 9 game/8 day homestand schedule to start on Friday, too.
  8. Sad news out of Minnesota as incoming freshman Sam Maresh has to undergo open heart surgery to repair a congenital heart defect that was discovered last week. Hopefully they caught it soon enough.
  9. I think it's permanent and I hate it. I couldn't figure out why it was up there last night. The second screen is the temporary one, but they haven't used it anymore because they already have the permanent one. I wonder if ESPN requested that there be two for tonight's game, but that still wouldn't explain why the Cubs put it up a day early.
  10. Not sure what's going on with Gameday, but regardless, today isn't a great day for long innings. The heat index is 97 degrees down in Memphis with the sun beating down.
  11. Randy Bush talked about Hill's inconsistent release point(s) after his previous start. Hendry is going to be busy come the trade deadline.
  12. Which is exactly what happened. Escobar had put on the breaks. He put on the breaks, but he didn't retreat. He just hesitated half-way between first and second. He didn't make any indication that he was going back to first, though, so the play was still at 2nd base. Hitting the cutoff man or throwing straight to second is perfectly fine, especially with Soriano's arm. The problem was that he slipped a bit and the throw pulled DeRosa away from the bag, but the play was still at 2nd base.
  13. Something screwy must've happened when I was on BR yesterday. Anyways, here's what he's done so far this year: First 4 starts 12.2 IP, 15.63 ERA, 26 H, 22 ER, 11 BB, 7 K, .433/.514/.717 against Last 10 starts 73.1 IP, 2.09 ERA, 63 H, 17 ER, 14 BB, 73 K, .235/.278/.336 against His WHIP from his last 10 starts is nearly 1/3rd of what it was to begin the season.
  14. It was because he missed the cutoff man. A throwing error I'd imagine. He missed the cutoff man on a throw to second to try to prevent a double? That's not an error. The play was at second and the throw went to second. It shouldn't matter if the throw is off-line or if the runner hesitates. Nothing Soriano did allowed that runner to stretch it into a double since you can't assume a putout at second. Escobar had stopped around first. He only went to second when he saw the throw get away. If Soriano fields it cleanly and hits the cutoff man Escobar stops at first. But it didn't get away. It just wasn't a good throw, which isn't an error. It still went to second. Missing a cutoff man isn't an error unless the ball gets away and the runner advances. It would be like a runner rounding third, hesitating, then continuing on to home as a throw comes in from LF. Just because the runner hesitated and ending up advancing safely doesn't mean the fielder did anything wrong. They did end up changing it to a straight double, though.

  16. I couldn't figure out how Soriano could be charged with an error when all he did was slip a bit, but it was changed.
  17. I don't think I've ever seen a manager do what Lou just did by fake yelling at Lilly.
  18. Derrek is looking so much better today.
  19. Lee's second hard hit ball of the night. That's a good sign.
  20. Since his disaster starts: 5 starts, 36.1 IP, 1.49 ERA, 29 H, 6 ER, 8 BB, 43 K, 1 HR, .220/.270/.295 against
  21. The Tigers have optioned him to their FSL affiliate.
  22. I think we're severely overestimating how much a ball that the average kid didn't even catch would mean to them. I'd figure that most wouldn't care much at all and forget about it the next day. Perhaps at one point the average boy would be so obsessed with baseball that he'd love it, but in 2008, the average kid at the ballpark probably isn't a huge baseball fan and they'd be far less attached to a foul ball. They've got better things to play with back at home...or even at the ballpark if they brought their Gameboy (referenced partially to sound like an out-of-touch adult). The average adult baseball fan would probably think more of it, to be honest.
  23. Another nail in the ISFA-owned Wrigley proposal's coffin:
  24. Rough inning so far. Single, K, RBI double, E5, RBI single (trail runner out at third)
