WHOA SUPER RANDOM I would say it makes little difference, the records are mostly luck.

The inning should be over if not for the Atkins error. AKA, Baseball's traditional game scoring is really stupid. I don't see what the big deal is. The inning should be over so the runs should be unearned. So why should the pitcher be allowed to go willy nilly and give up home runs and other things the defense isn't related to? ERA in general is stupid. Its much too much subjective, and the ability to completely end all scoring on a pitcher after an error is stupid with 2 outs too.

Not really, but you can count them up here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/2007_lu.shtml The Cubs are 14-7 when Pie starts in CF since June 3rd The Cubs are 14-7 when Jones starts in CF since June 3rd The Cubs are 8-9 when Pagan starts in CF since June 3rd Kendall has a little more evidence for your contention (the Cubs are 7-9 when Kendall starts) but considering that the biggest problem for the Cubs during those games is bad offense, and considering Kendall brings better offense then either Koyie Hill or Bowen, the switch to Kendall was not the reason the Cubs started losing. Welcome to the board btw. The Cubs winning percentage with Pagan has less to do with him, and more to do with the fact that with Pagan in the lineup we're almost certainly facing a Lefty.

Argh, came here to post exactly that. A great primer for more indepth statistical analysis in baseball. Thanks everyone for the consensus on this -- made it real easy to take the plunge and get it (less than $8, shipping included ;)) Looking forward to reading it! By far my favorite part of the book is a chapter on how influential major league managers are, and the author spends a long time railing against Dusty Baker.

Bye Bye, Cedeno. Good riddance. not a CedenoFan? Do I have a reason to be? 24-year-old SS for what is apparently your favorite team that sported a .921 OPS and .967 OPS in 2 stints at AAA when he was 22 and 24. Those 2 partial seasons total about 500 ABs. That's pretty good. He also sports many mental errors on defense, and can't hit at the ML level. If he is gone, I will piss my pants with joy. Whoa, whoa whoa. There is not enough proof yet to show that Cedeno can't hit at the major league level.

This is hyperbole, I understand it. But I feel like the Cubs are just not worthy to make the playoffs after the last 5-6 games. Come ON. WIN A FREAKING GAME WHEN YOU NEED ONE This lack of offense is killing me.

So did I...but I realized he wasn't that good...ever. Bigger/better hitter... Larry Whigham or Chris Harris? Big Hitter, whatever. I've been begging for a safety that can handle pass coverage the past 3 years. (Other than Mike Brown of course) -
