He probably didn't even start switch hitting because he felt some sort of natural tendency to, he probably just figured it would annoy opposing pitchers and just generally be more fun. I don't remember Z pitching in 02, but I remember him being one of my favorite parts of the 03 season, cemented by that game-tying HR late in the game in Houston. On the good or the crappy teams since, he has consistently been the best part of it all. He even made 06 somewhat enjoyable because every other start of his seemed to be him toying with a no-hitter
