I don't know who the "this is a historic collapse" crowd was - I have been emotional and angry at the team but I never once really thought they had any chance of losing out on a wild card spot.
The frustration had much more to do with the Brewers going on one of the best tears in baseball history right when the Cubs started scuffling a bit (and a sober eye could see even the scuffle wasn't that bad) and nearly locked down the entire division in like a 6 week span.
They're going to the playoffs - that is more or less unquestioned at this point. What they do there, well who knows. The goal is to make it, ideally make it as a good seed, and most importantly make it as often as possible. That's one thing they've been bad at: you can't load up for just one year every 4 years. You gotta just keep making it and eventually you win one. The Dodgers did it, despite notorious seasons where they blew it with the best team in baseball. So could anyone else if they make it 15 years in a row.
