They probably got their info from Schmidt's agent, which Bruce said was probably a false rumor that the agent thought up. I doubt that SI.com and ESPN would have it as such big news if there was only a blurb about it in the San Francisco Chronicle. Kaplan is an unreliable source who has no history of ever being correct. He did break the Sammy Sosa trade. Let's go back on just the last few weeks. He said that the Cubs were close to signing Meche and a deal would be done in the next few days. That never happened. He said that the Floyd deal would be done a couple days ago. That also never happened. He said that Hendry's top priority in the offseason right after the regular season was Barry Zito. That turned out to be incorrect as well. Kaplan is more of a fan rather than someone who you can take for a reliable source regarding rumors. His credibility equals the credibility that you and I have. His "sources" are probably what was reported by Bruce Miles and Bruce Levine.
