Good thing it took 6 weeks... And where does Fox go when Aramis comes back? Back up 1st, 3rd, LF. I'd rather have Fox around than Hoff if we can only pick one. What a crappy choice though. Both those guys have really been a couple of the only guys swinging the bat... And the whole point is to get him in the lineup....backup doesn't do that. -

Well yeah, he had better matchups. He was Derosa's backup for the most part. With Derosa gone, and Aramis injured, Fontenot is being exposed.

Maybe Hendry should be our biggest disappointment.

Font is my biggest disappointment this year. I really thought he was capable of coming in on an everyday basis and putting up a .285 .360 line with 15 HR pop. How in the world is Fontenot a bigger disappointment than Bradley? We grew to love Fontenot last year, where as we were skeptical of Bradley from day one? The Cubs spent huge money and presumeably traded Derosa in order to be able to obtain Bradley. He's a much bigger disappointment.

He did have some big catches for Grossman a couple years ago as the 3rd WR. Some think getting him back in that role will be good for him. He was forced to be on the field way too much last year due to Booker's suckiness and Lloyd being hurt. NFL Replay just showed the week 15 game against the Saints last year, and Davis had at least a couple flat out drops in that game. It seems to me that wasn't a rare occurrence. I'm not a Davis fan, but did the guy really give him too much credit? He called him solid and said he'd have 40 catches. He had 35 last year with Orton/Grossman and the presence of Lloyd and Booker on the field. I see him as a 3rd receiver type player who should be able to get about 40. I'd love for one fo the younger guys to push him off the roster, but I'm not sure any of them are ready to step up. Eh...I guess I'm just not sure how "solid" he is. In any case, I think we're all of pretty much the same opinion about him.

another way to write -OBP2-SLG2 = -.9 is this: -1 * OBP2-SLG2 = -.9 Then when you add the two equations together, how you end up with the .8 is a bit more visible. -

Nah...dude was a delinquent. His pic is in this article on the right if anyone is interested. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090624/NEWS/90624008 He was in a car chase over the weekend after bashing windows with a baseball bat. That kid wasn't ever getting any scholarships. I'm guessing he was high or drunk and some old incident where he was mad at that coach just took over... -

Do we really have any idea how much more widespread greenies were/are than steroids/HGH? We have the steroid survey from 2003, I know, but to my knowledge we really only have subjective observation as far as the usage of greenies. To my knowledge, we don't. It has been speculated that the use of amphetamines in baseball has always been widespread. I think Tony Gwynn said once he guessed 50% of the players were using it to pep up for games. An 81 game road schedule is indeed tiring. It's cheating, no doubt. I just can't equate it with steroid use, the difference in effect is too great. Especially these regimen-supported programs some of these guys engaged in, where they have some kind of roid czar planning out hourly pill taking with different flavors of roids for different days, etc. The gulf between that and greenies? Grand Canyon. Yeah see that's where I question it. Seems like complete speculation. -
Good luck to him. I understand why the Bears didn't keep him, but it's still tough to let Mike Brown go. I didn't think he was coming back last year, so I don't view it as all that tough. But I still think it's a little weird that they just let him walk away when they had a need at the position. I still wonder what the full motivation is. Maybe it was just a roster management thing. It's gotta be hard when your starter keeps going down to injury every season. At least planning on Payne/Steltz being in there, you don't have the uncertainty. You buying that? :)

Guys, I agree...save percentage is a poor measurement to compare closers. I only was using that because champaignchris used the the "only 3 blown saves" argument to say that he wasn't bad. I was simply countering that particular argument. Gregg isn't awful. But he's not good, and he doesn't give me the warm fuzzies (I don't have stats to back that last one up...you'll just have to trust me. :) )

It doesn't make him good, but nobody's arguing that - I don't think. He's a pretty average closer, no more, no less. Well first, I'm not sure what I was looking at, but I was wrong...he's 12th (out of 16) in the NL in save percentage, not 10th. And would be 12th (out of 14) in the AL as well, not 11th. Now maybe he's average in some other stats, but those are definitely below average.

Well HGH wasn't tested for in '03(Might still not, can't remember), and I think it's pretty well accepted that there is stuff out there you can be on that won't be caught on a test. Taking the % of players who failed the test in '03 as the % of players on stuff seems foolish to me. That's fine...I was just challenging the notion that we really had any concept of how widespread the use of any of the mentioned substances is... I'll admit, this thread has at least made me question my position on this issue.
