  1. I guess I didn't realize it was the consensus that he was that big of a small ball manager. It'd be interesting to know how many hit and runs there were per season under him compared to other managers. I'm kinda surprised there aren't more managerial statistics kept like that. Unless there is, in which case, nevermind.
  2. NTC I wondered that as soon as I hit "submit".
  3. Boy, I just don't see the Dusty comparisons at all.
  4. Agreed, but that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to settle for a manager who does it too often like Brenly. Yeah, I don't get the Brenly thing either. The man had Schilling and Johnson, both in the prime of their careers, both having lights-out seasons. Dusty would have won in that situation too. So would a bunch of good managers. What's your point? I mean, I'm cool that people don't agree with me on him as a potential manager and all, I just think the "he had too much talent around him" reason is silly. That doesn't tell me a thing about him as a manager.
  5. What if Shark was called up to show him off for a trade? Could it be Shark for Bell?
  6. Saying you like hippos when you actually don't? :)
  7. The local radio "news break" mentioned Vitters' promotion, and called him "Cuba's first round draft pick".
  8. Why not? Because Brenly was a pretty bad manager who rode an amazing starting rotation to a WS. I'm not saying this as a fan of Lou because I was not a big fan of hiring him in the first place, but I definitely do not want Brenly. Bob seems like good people and I really like him as the color guy but I do not want him managing the Cubs. I'm very curious if people wanting Brenly managing now wanted him for the job back after 2006. Wanting Brenly just screams of change for the sake of change. Plus, let's be clear: if Lou quits or is fired before the end of the season Trammel will finish the job. I did. But I recognize that there were many on the board that didn't agree. I'm curious what managers wouldn't do hit and runs and bunts and steals and what not. I mean, I get why people don't like it...I just don't think having a manager that doesn't do that is terribly realistic.
  9. It's like a Who's Who of managers. I bet a majority of these guys picked people like Piniella and the such because they probably don't know who the hell is managing the Nats or the A's. Interesting point. I wonder if they went and asked the same guys what teams they would least like to play for if it would different results.
  10. It would indicate which managers are more likely to be listed as "guy I don't want to play for" among free agents. Free agents can sign with the same team though. What does that mean? I just mean that when Milton Bradley, for example, becomes a free agent, he can say Piniella is a "guy I don't want to play for. I'll sign with anyone but the Cubs"... But for the purposes of this poll, he wasn't allowed to say Piniella.

  12. See?! Any deal involving those kind of big names surely indicates a fire sale!
  13. I'm just not a big fan of a plan for the rest of the year where we wait for people just suddenly start playing better. I might be entertaining this idea more just because it involves getting rid of Bradley, who I've really grown to dislike.
  14. If Miles was anywhere near that in 2009, I'd have a much different opinion about this. And clearly, as you mentioned, the platoon situation last year helped out Fontenot a ton.
  15. Do you think the media just goes and finds old articles about Prior to cut and paste? Because it's the same stuff every time.
  16. You give up the possibly good bat (but so far, pretty bad bat) for the almost sure thing OBP. Castillo has been very consistent. Plus you open up a spot in RF for Jake Fox, where you hopefully get that power back that you lose from Bradley's potential. If you wait till Aramis is back, I think this could be a nice money saving deal. You're not saving much money though. If Castillo were in the final year of his deal and we would have $9+ million each of the next two years to play with, I'd be for it. But to save $3 million and $6 million the next two years is not worth trading away the potential that Bradley has for, at best, a .350-.370 OBP. Bradley's OBP is already back up to .352 and he's slugging 50 points better than Castillo this year. Castillo has a much better batting average and 20 points higher OBP, that's it. Bradley is OPSing 28 points higher than Castillo right now. You're comparing what is supposed to be a power hitting RF to a light hitting, leadoff-type 2B though. The comparisons you should be making should be Jake Fox/Hoffpauir to Bradley, and Castillo to Fontenot/Blanco/Miles. I suspect in both cases those are going to be upgrades over the current numbers at both 2B and RF. Granted, Bradley has played way below his ability up to now this year, but with his injuries factored in...this would be a risk I'd be willing to take.
  17. Yes...he would need to be "reinstated"...which apparently Goodell is not inclined to do.

  19. Well I like it from a Cubs perspective. If you want a prototypical leadoff guy, Castillo can be it, and it gets Fontenot/Miles off the field, along with giving Fox a spot to play everyday if you wanna try him in RF.
  20. Obviously they have the right to do it. I'm just not sure they should. Clearly the league agrees with you, though. So the NFL should not have the right to suspend players who commit serious violations of the law? The NFLPA would disagree with you. Sorry, that was pretty poor wording on my part. They have the right, and I have no problem with them having that right. In this particular instance, with Vick having already been in jail for a lengthy amount of time, I'm not sure there's a lot of justice being served by further preventing him from resuming his career. I wasn't meaning that they shouldn't have that right...I just don't necessarily think they should be exercising that right in this case.

  22. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jc-burressvick062909&prov=yhoo&type=lgns I can understand Plaxico being suspended because his case hasn't taken its course through the justice system yet but suspending Vick just seems like Goodell being a power tripping douche. Yeah, it's awful but he did his time and if some team wants to give him a shot they should be able to pursue him without the threat of a suspension. Agreed. What's the point of suspending Vick? Because he hasn't been suspended by the league yet. He missed time due to his own legal problems, but the league has yet to punish him. Likewise, Plaxico missed time because he shot himself and was unable to play anyway, his team gave out punishment, but the team did not. If Plaxico's injury forced him to miss this year as well, the team could feel free to suspend him next year, when he returns. But if Plax was jailed for a year, I'd feel the same way. Yes, he's not being "punished" by the league, but the effect is the same. Vick had to miss playing in the NFL the entire time he was gone...no credit for "time served"?
