  1. Yeah, I don't know how this "baseball owners would never let Cuban in" nonsense got started, much less how it somehow became undeniable fact. Much of Cuban's problems with the NBA is he wants the owners to have much more individual power over their product, rather than delegating all the authority to one central commission 'czar' like David Stern. The MLB is a much better model for what Cuban wants than the NBA. The MLB is full of meglomaniacs owners, Cuban wouldn't stand out that much. I know that Cuban and Tom Hicks are good friends. All you need is one powerful ally to get you in the door. If the Mavs win the NBA Championship, I fully believe Cuban will sell the team and move on to his next challenge. He's already hinted that he might sell the team, and he's said repeatedly that he's not in the NBA to make money because of the league's antiquated owner's rules confine him too much.
  2. If the organization really doesn't think Fox will ever be a major league catcher, they need to give him a shot at another position. I would actually prefer Fox to Blanco on the roster. I don't think his defense would be a huge liability as a spot starter for Barrett, and he brings so much more to the table as far as a bat off the bench.
  3. I'm ecstatic that Pie is having a great spring, but he still has A LOT to work on in the minor leagues. If he's still tearing the cover off the ball by July without going through an extended slump, fine, by all means, dump Jones. But to just foist him into the starting lineup when his minor league production has been so incredibly streaky is so unbelievably risky and stupid that only Jim Hendry could think of it.
  4. Dopi back to Tenn this soon? Guess he didn't make too much of an impression on the new staff.
  5. Going into the season, I didn't anticipate Prior to even begin throwing against live competition until May. As far as I'm concerned, everything he's done in Surprise has been gravy. When we get to May/June and Prior is still struggling with command and velocity, I'll be worried/disappointed.
  6. This, moreso than lack of spending, has been my beef with the Cubs organization in recent years. It was worse when MacPhail was still here. Too much group think and absolutely no one held accountable for anything.
  7. I was never a huge Sammy fan, but I hope the list of 104 gets released so the heat can be spread around a little. In 20 years, we're not even going to care about steroids anymore.
  8. Probably because some people don't religiously post on messageboards and scour the internet for every baseball tidbit they can get their hands on.
  9. I have a feeling it will be Marquis in the #3 and Prior in the #5, and I don't necessarily mind Prior's start skipped occasionally early in the season. Just as long as he's there in August and September.
  10. I like how everyone acts like its scientifically proven that Wood/Prior would have had injury free careers if not for Dusty's overwork (what top of the rotation pitchers aren't overworked in a pennant race that comes down to the wire? Its not like Beane and the A's weren't sending Zito and Mulder out there 230 innings in their second years in the heat of pennant races). Especially Prior, who has had some fluke injuries. The truth is no one knows, and to say with certainty is ill-founded. Its just been repeated over and over again on that its taken as truth .. which is how faulty baseball heuristics are founded in the first place. Or are some faulty speculative heuristics better than others?
  11. If Kerry Wood and Mark Prior could stay healty, where is Hendry ranked?
  12. While Murton does have the asset of a cheap salary, I really don't project him to be a plus left fielder, so I'm not much worried about whether he gets 500 AB's or not. To me the most worrying thing is this paves the way for Hendry to trade Jones for nothing. I don't mind trading Jones, especially after bringing in Floyd, but I wouldn't do it just because Hendry has made up his mind that he has to. To me the most critical thing is that Soriano is playing CF, where he reaches his highest value.
  13. Yeah, you probably got to give it to him, but I wouldn't do it now. He could suffer an arm injury in June for all we know. Z knows it to, and that's why he's going with the tried and true "I don't wanna talk contract once the season starts' line (which generally means they sign an extension in August 9 times out of 10).
  14. Just on potential, and not probability, Top 3.
  15. And Steve Finley put up a .900 OPS in 2000. Doesn't much change the fact that he's washed up now, though.
  16. I heard people clamoring for him all offseason, but frankly I never understood the fascination with a 35 year old, .700 OPS hitter with a horrible glove. What next? Steve Finley?
  17. Bet they'd change their tune if he were offered an extension for Wells-like money. Maybe, but they're going to get their money anyway. Boras isn't one to sign an extension when he can squeeze out every dollar he can from the open market.
  18. Jones has been "on the block" forever, but Jones and Boras have emphatically said, repeatedly, that they will not wave his no trade clause. The only time they've wavered even the slightest is when the Dodgers were mentioned.
  19. I think its more a case of timing. The Sox don't have anywhere to put McCarthy at the moment, but could need someone in the next year or two. The Rangers need someone who can contribute now.
  20. Because he's a solid, durable pitcher. And he's getting the same deal as Lilly, when he's a way better pitcher than Lilly. Merry Christmas and Happy Hyperbole !!!!
  21. If its a one year deal with incentives, I really have no problem with it.
  22. Testing may have began in 2005, but it might have taken some time for him to fully lose all of the muscle mass and strength. Kind of funny that Marcus and Brian saw their power numbers absolutely plummet simultaneously. With the Braves not offering arb. and no more than he got on the open market that has been throwing money everywhere, it seems the rest of baseball found it a little curious as well. Maybe Santa will stuff the stocking with some flax seed oil.
  23. Given that baseball is finally seeing the fruits of some long needed labor/CBA stability I don't see revenues going down anytime soon, therefore I don't see salaries going down. And I don't see free agent markets getting any better, because as more teams start seeing revenues come in the less likely they are that they're going to let their Venrnon Wells' hit the market. Looking at the history of salaries the last 20 years is akin to looking at the history of the stock market. There may be short term dips and spikes, but longterm has trended steadily up. The collective gasp of Soriano's announced contrct today is no worse than when Kirby broke the $3 million barrier in 1989. Someone is going to break A-Rod's contract, sooner rather than later. Puhols could probably break it today if he had the chance.
