  1. I heard about this on XM's baseball morning show - what a feel good story. He did a good thing and got many good returns for it...I'm guessing that Matt will probably be helping the aunt out even more going forward!
  2. For those of you who have subscribed to the mlb.tv or gameday audio packages, I got an email back regarding my "where the heck is the schedule?" question. On mlb.com, go to schedule > spring training http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/index.jsp#20070227 or, there's an article on the front of mlb.com that gives you this: http://mlb.mlb.com/mediacenter/index.jsp#20070228 which is a different link yet again. Looks like, by selecting the "open calendar" feature on that page, they don't quite have the rest of things built out yet. They seem a bit behind this spring...kind of surprising seeing that they're trying to sell their package right now.
  3. Come again? What would you be doing (or buying) if you wanted to catch the most spring training games. MLB.tv or XM radio service. I actually get both...I can't get XM reception at work, so get mlb.tv for the gameday audio there. Then, I travel for work enough that I also get the TV package so I can watch the Cubs from my hotel room in Atlanta, or wherever I might be. The TV looks to be improved this year, and the premium, where you can set up alerts to pop when certain (fantasy) players come up, seems pretty cool. I would also vote XM if you don't have the issue at work, though...I can't get enough of mine!
  4. they moved the info regarding mlb.tv - if you go to the schedule > spring training option here: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/index.jsp that's got the info for what's on TV. Not sure where the audio's going to be...guess I'll figure it out tomorrow. You can assume that mlb.tv will have all 14 games being broadcast by the cubs, in addition to any that might be broadcast elsewhere (for instance, I can remember that there was audio for A's games last ST). Tomorrow we'll figure it out!
  5. I just emailed mlb.com to find out where their schedule was for both audio and video. It's usually up by now, but I wonder if that's just the nature of Spring Training - perhaps the teams aren't all sure yet what is going to be available? Anyway, as soon as I hear something, will be sure to post - the premium subscription should be worth a fairly quick response! XM, by the way, does pick up all broadcasts, so it could be that they just didn't know about those listed above (or had found out so recently that they hadn't updated their schedule yet) - either way, it can't hurt to contact them, just to be sure!
  6. Yeah I'll be there for the Saturday game. One thing about baseball in Milwaukee in April --- it won't be cold at the game, no matter what. I'm pretty excited. I hear Miller Park is awesome. Although, I think that's Easter weekend, so I'll probably just go on Fri and Sat... I've got tix to all 3 games too - if you're really interested in going, I'd suggest buying your tix *now* - I don't think they'll be around long! And this series is over the Easter weekend, lucky for me as I've got Good Firday off anyway - might as well put it to good use. Miller Park is beautiful - we went to a game there when we were up for Irish Fest a few years ago. Question, though - anyone know how warm they keep things when the roof is closed? I read somewhere that it can be up to 30 degrees warmer inside, so don't know if I should pack short sleeves, long sleeves, what type of jacket, will a blanket be warranted, etc. In April, it could be 40-50 degrees outside, so hard to predict. Any guidance will be appreciated :)
  7. got 'em - it's April, but if it's cold, they'll close the roof. Got tix to Fri/Sat/Sun games - woo hoo! It will definitely be better than watching the Chiefs freeze their rears off up in Appleton that weekend :) I just got Saturday as I'll be making the trip up. Got tickets in loge infield box. I've never sat there before but the view looks pretty good. I hope its warm, I'll be tailgating! good stuff! we got Field Diamond box seats (section 119 row 5) for friday, then Loge Diamond boxes for Sat/Sun (sect 217 row 3 Sat, sect 218 row 2 Sun) Since we'll be staying, we'll likely bus it to the stadium on Fri and Sat, then drive and park on Sunday (so we can just hop on the interstate after the game's over). Between this and Spring Training, I'm pumped!
  8. got 'em - it's April, but if it's cold, they'll close the roof. Got tix to Fri/Sat/Sun games - woo hoo! It will definitely be better than watching the Chiefs freeze their rears off up in Appleton that weekend :)
  9. I  Bruce! Seriously, great article. It makes me all the more glad that I chose a Murton jersey for the holidays.
  10. damn, thats barry bondsish! yes, isn't that the truth! For some reason, he doesn't appreciate me pointing out that he has a big melon, either. All the more space for brain, if you ask me :)
  11. my darling husband wears a size 8 hat, so I can sympathize with those of you that are nervous about this change. With that said, however, I would say that he's had good experience with the mesh L/XL hats that flex. Who knows, maybe the new ones will fit better!?!
  12. So we're going up to see the Chiefs play in Cedar Rapids in July, and it appears that the IA Cubs will be in town playing New Orleans the couple of days before, so I'm thinking of catching a game there before backtracking to Cedar Rapids. I've never been to Principal Park, so was hoping someone here could provide some guidance. 1) Where's a good spot to stay? I'd like to be relatively close, but not at a dump. Where do the visiting teams get put up? 2) Suggestions on seats? We sit behind the plate in Peoria, but am open to hearing pros/cons of best spots. 3) Suggestions on places to eat? Other important Des Moines hotspots? :) Thanks in advance for the help!
  13. I just signed up for premium a couple of days ago as well :) I tried the beta version of mosaic last year (when it was free) and it was pretty cool. I guess this year, you'll be able to do things like select favorite players and have your "main" screen switch over when particular players are at bat. I haven't played fantasy until this year, but can definitely see how this could be kinda cool I *loved* having Gameday Audio as well. I can't get an XM signal at work, so this allows me to be able to listen as I'm working with spreadsheets and doing other fun things in my cube.
  14. was the picture in the NY Times article from before or after the haircut?!? Inquiring minds want to know...
  15. I'm gonna go with 5/22 at San Diego.
  16. that's good with me - I don't have anything else going on that day at all (and for those that go to church on Sun AM, this should work out OK too...)
  17. would Sunday 3/4 work for folks? What time doesn't make a lot of difference to me...I could do it at other times, but we're going to be in AZ for Spring Training the 2 weekends after that one.
  18. yep, I got it for about a year, with the last issue being May 2006 - it had Matt Tuiasosopo on the cover (I think?!?) I loved it, but then it just stopped coming. Never heard a word, and it took me a couple of months to realize I hadn't gotten one in a while - checked their website and saw it wasn't getting updated and was bummed. It was not exactly hard hitting journalism, but it was fun and very informative about the minor league game and different teams. I was sorry to see it stop publishing. I wonder if they were hoping to see a bigger uptake in distribution in the minor league parks. The only one I ever saw it in was Clinton, IA (and if you know how many fans Clinton gets in a year, you'd understand).
  19. I missed hearing Tony on the radio - it was his best venue, imho. This makes me all the more happy I just bought my husband an inno - I'll be able to record this :) It makes me wish that my workplace could actually receive an XM signal...
  20. <--- KMacCurve (original, I know) I'm good with doing a live draft, but can not do it on the 3rd as it's scheduled now. I'm finishing an MBA and have class from 9:30-12:30 on Saturday 3/3. Is there another time we could do this? Perhaps on 3/4? Thanks!
  21. funny, as it's this wife dragging (well, sort of) the husband off to all the baseball. The 2 a days seem very do-able, but if it's your first spring training, I'd suggest only buying tickets to the one game, then buy the other at the gate. This way, if you decide you don't feel like going, you're not out anything. btw - avondale should be a good general location to stay. We were in Carefree last year, and it look forever to get anywhere. I'm a fan of having some time around the pool to relax - so we choose not to do 2 a days, but we also enjoy spending some time at Fitch watching the minor leaguers workout. I am getting *way* too excited for this vacation...
  22. I was trying to remember Sean's comments as well. I know he got his hair cut before his appearance at the Cubs Convention but I was wanting to say it was more because of family than any rule in the system. I think there is some kind of Cub rule though, because when we got a couple of guys on the Chiefs toward the end of last year in a trade (don't remember who or which trade), one of them - a pitcher if I recall- had to go and get a haircut or shave or something. My memory is bad.
  23. If I remember right, I think Sean Gallagher told me once that the Cubs *do* have a thing about short hair and no facial hair. Perhaps that was just for minor leaguers but not sure...
  24. we saw a Brewer/KC game at Surprise last year on St Patty's day and that was a *beautiful* park. The Rangers play there along with KC. The traffic getting there is a pain in the neck (add 1/2 hour to whatever you think it's gonna take to get you there) We got tickets right behind home plate, about 10 rows back in the shade. It was perfect! This year we're going to Maryvale (the Brewers home park) just because my husband wants a good sausage. We'll be at Hohokam for the game on 3/11 and are catching both games at Tucson Electric Park that week - vs the Dbax and the White Sox. We saw the Dbax and White Sox play there last year too. TEP is a nice stadium - the Sidewinders of the PCL play there during the AAA season. The tough part is getting a seat in the shade so my pale IL skin doesn't burn to a crisp in the warmth of AZ!
  25. when we go in a few weeks, we're staying at the Hilton in Mesa - https://secure.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=MESHPHF it's not particularly close - but I would bet that they have a shuttle that could at least take you to the park (even if you had to taxi back) Another option would be staying near another park, depending on where the cubs are playing while you're there. There are 2 or 3 parks that share between 2 teams - so, for instance, the week we're there, they play in Tucson twice, at the same park, once versus the Dbax and the other vs the White Sox. Good luck!
