Does he really value OPB though? To me, Hendry is moreso trying to emulate the Yankees than show legitimate concern for OPB. For example, the Yanks collect superstars. Sheff, Giambi, ARod, etc. are all players brought in by the the Yankees because the are superstars. Sure, their stardom arises partially due to their strong OBP statistics, but those are likely incidental to the fact that the Yanks want them. Due to payroll constraints (as everyone has who aren't the Yankees), Hendry is kind of the poor-man's Brian Cashman. He collects lesser star players on the cheap. He appreciates that Lee, ARam and Nomar have potential to produce, but OBP is incidental. Hendry hasn't shown a willingness to chase, or force the play of, high OBP players with limited power like Boston or Oakland does. OBP just doesn't seem to be a priority in the supporting cast. i agree w/ you, jc. the only guy he's gotten that would indicate that he cares about OBP is lawton...and his OBP sucked while he was here. so i don't know if he'll go that route again any time soon. I think he valued Lee's OBP. Lee didn't have the huge upside of Ramirez or Barrett when acquired. He didn't have the big name of Nomar. The only things that stood out about Lee is that he had the walk rate and the power/size to do well outside of Florida and defense. The move for Lawton gives me hope that Hendry values OBP a little. Going out and getting and then retaining Todd Walker gives me hope (of course the love for Soriano over Walker causes my indifference that I wrote about last post). And acquiring Matt Murton and subsequently trading Lawton and Hollandsworth to get him on the field gives me hope. Calling up Adam Greenberg gives me hope. Getting Jerry Hairston gives me hope. I guess I can't say for a fact that Hendry values OBP, but you can't say that the moves are incidental. Really? The fact that he traded one of the only guys on our team capable of taking a walk for Lee makes me think that he valued Lee for something other than his BB taking abilities.

You need to realize that someone disagreeing with you isn't some kind of personal attack. I don't care that you have a different opinion, I care that I think your different opinion is wrong. Although in the future, I certainly won't care, as no kind of opinion is worth arguing with you over and over about something so meaningless. The offense may be 2nd in OPS, but they are 8th in OBP, and that won't cut it, seeing as OBP is more valuable than SLG. The pitching definitely needs help, but ignoring our woeful OF while stocking up on pitching will not solve our problems. One quick stroke won't fix anything, it's going to take several brushes over the entire team canvas.

Out of 13 qualifying NL SS, Neifi is 10th in RC/G. Ahead of such luminaries as Royce Clayton, Jack Wilson and Cesar Izturis. And out of 23 qualifying MLB SS, he is 18th. Face it, he's garbage, whether he was signed as a backup or not, he sucks, and anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they're talking about. I'm not saying that it's necessarily possible that we could have gotten anyone better in the offseason, but that doesnt change the fact that he in fact, sucks.

I still don't see a difference. No one has been more valuable than Lee this season. Pujols has been close. The reason the Cardinals are going to the playoffs has more to do with the players around Pujols, hitters, fielders and pitchers. Put Lee on the Cardinals this season, and they would be even further ahead of the Cubs than they already are. Lee, despite the players around him sucking for the most part, has been more valuable than anyone else this season. The fact that we arent going to the playoffs has less to do with him and more to do with garbage he's surrounded with.

No it isn't, not at all actually. You're still focusing your agument on wins, which are useless as a tool to look at pitcher performance. I wouldn't expect you to agree with this, as you've proven your statistical ignorance for the last 20 pages. Clemens has been a superior pitcher this season. This isn't taking anything away from Carpenter, who has had one of the better pitching seasons of the last 10 years. It's much like Pujols losing the MVP to Bonds the last few seasons, Pujols had incredible years, it was just too bad they had to coincide with Bonds seasons.
