    Prior isn't a very good pitcher. I'd trade him for a hitter just like I'd trade Hill for a hitter.

    That was rumored last year IIRC. What are Heilman's numbers this year? Might not be bad, and we do have plenty of 2B to replace Walker :roll: 4.39 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 41IP. He's having problems with his release point and he's been very inconsistent so far. For Walker, a guy who is going to be gone after this season, I think that would be a major score. Even if does what he's doing now, he'd easily be our No. 2 starter if we put him in the rotation.

    Rookies don't have to be hitting .300/.350/.475 to contribute to the team. Good teams should be able to fit a less than spectaculiar young hitter or two into a lineup without a problem. The problem with the Cubs is their veterans aren't any good, so people expect the kids to make up the difference. That's not how it should work. That's fine, but nobody should be saying any of these guys are playing well because they're not. You could say say Marshall and Cedeno are doing ok for their first full season in the big leagues at best. It's hard to ignore the fact the perfomance of the young players has been a major contribution to the team record. I think that's all Baker was trying to say.

    Anyone with less than 7 years playing experience is a rookie to this guy. Be a man and don't blame them Baker will you? Oh yeah Baker, explain how Florida is doing so much better than the Cubs too while you're at it? Coward. Or how about the Dodgers (with a similar payroll situations, and injuries) with 7 rookies? It's amazing how all the evidence is building up against Baker but yet the jury is rigged. I know a lot of people like to see the young guys play, but we don't have players like the Dodgers. Name one rookie or second year player having a good season. Since there are only 0 everyday rookies on the team I'd say none unless Cedeno is considered a rookie then I would say he's doing his part to help the team. Murton is having a below last year type season but again, they are the only young guys on this everyday roster. I think the rookies that have split the 4/5 spots in the rotation have done their part, not outstanding but decent. Baker just can not handle pressure and is too thin skinned to except blame. The guys he seems to love to play so much are the ones that are killing him. Cedeno's OBP is too low for me to say he is doing well. The defense was bad early but has improved. I like him, but I can't say he is having a good season by major league standards. The young guys in the rotation have to have an ERA in the 6's. I don't think that is very good.

    Baker and Hendry need to go for what they have done since they took their positions, but as far as this season is concerned, it's all on the players. We have about 20 guys who should be playing better.

    Murton, Cedeno, Hill and the rookies that have played for the Cubs this year have not played well, so I can't blame him for being frustrated with that, but he should spread around the blame and include himself in that. I think Walker, Jones and Barrett are the only starters who have carried their own weight (include Nevin/Lee though they haven't played much). Eyre and Howry are the only guys on the pitching staff who is having a good season. It's a bad team all the way around.

    I'd be happy to send them Ramirez, Walker and Maddux for Wright, but I doubt they would go for it.

    The reason I proposed it is because I think Weaver is much more valuable to us than Aram for a number of reasons. Yes, you leave a hole at third, but I believe Mora is a free agent. He's just as good an overall player as Aramis and may be cheaper.

I have a feeling that no matter who takes the job on interim, they will get at least an interview for the full-time gig. Would you rather Hendry make a snap judgement and not be able to interview all candidates because some candidates are already employed on other clubs? Whether it is Speir or someone else, I'd rather Hendry just tell that person they would be considered after the season just to get them to babysit this mess for the rest of the season. In reality, it would be a flat out lie, but I don't have faith in Hendry to do that, at least with Speir. Furthermore, Hendry probably sees the us as still being in the race, at least for the wild card. I'd expect him to hire his longterm guy now so they can spark the team to a playoff run. That's just how he is probably looking at it. Wow...what integrity you have. I surely hope you never find yourself in a position of authority. If it's really as difficult to find someone to manage the team the rest of the year, you gotta do what you gotta do. It's too bad, but that's business.

    Please enlighten us as to how well Jered Weaver plays 3b. I must be totally out of the loop on that. Um...as far as I know, he doesn't....hope that helps.

    Eh, it wouldn't hurt to see what happens if he is the interim manager. Maybe he ends up being respected in the clubhouse, puts together good lineups, and knows what he's doing with the bullpen. If he comes aboard as the interim manager and the team does well, it wouldn't hurt to at least interview him again and give him some thought. If he's just as clueless as Baker, he can be discarded rather easily at the end of the season. I still don't like it. If the team plays better, he might not even have anything to do with it and come out looking great and getting an unearned extension. He's a Hendry guy. The more I think about it, I don't even want this guy anywhere near the team if Dusty and other coaches are fired.

    I've always wondered why things like that don't happen a lot more often in sports. The Cubs could have got Soriano for Sosa and resigned him if they did that. I'd just throw in an extra 2 or 3 mil to the contract to get the player to do it. If he liked playing for your team and wanted to win, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. He might even get a ring out of it with his temporary team.

    Doubtful. Here's my scenario. Fire Baker, Rothschild, Clines, Pole and Matthews. Promote Spier to interim manager. Promote Von Joshua as interim hitting coach. See if Billy Williams will serve as third base or bench coach for the interim. Promote other guys within the organization to serve in the other capaities. At the end of the season, interview Gonzalez, Dierker, and even Spier. Hopefully, Davey Johnson will be available for an interview as well. The new manager can select his own staff. Just curious. Why Spier? I just don't see that as productive at all. Spier is the only one that wasn't a "Baker Boy." I don't think he's all that loyal to Baker so he likely would accept the postion. Secondly, he makes an easy person to promote. I'm not advocating giving him the job. On ther other hand, I don't think he'll do a horrible job and in reality, we're just letting him have the helm until the end of the season. I think he'd be easier to replace in the offseason than other people who you might have to promise a longer tenure to. Many candidates may not be available mid-season. By promoting Spier as interim, the Cubs give themselves the time to plan rather than reacting impulsively. Sure Brenly would take the job, but my guess is he'd want more than an interim title to step down from the booth into the dugout. Since I think we can do better than Brenly, I'd rather not hitch our wagon to that horse in such a situation. What about him makes you want to consider him for the position after this season? Nothing really. But we'd have half a season to observe him on the job to make an assessment. He could be given an interview with no guarantees of the job. Well, this job is way too big for someone like him. The Cubs need to hire someone with at least experience or excellent credentials. I would just tell Spier he can finish out the season, see what it's like to manage some big league games and go on his way unless the new manager wants him as the third base coach again.

    I like this idea. It also would pretty much make the decision on who we take, which isn't really a bad thing IMO. I'm torn between Thomas and Roy, but I would feel a lot better about getting Roy if we got a solid big man later.

    Pulling our overused ace pitchers in blowout games doesn't really amount to conservative, in my book. Just smart. Agreed. If that is all we are talking about, I've always hated that crap. I don't mind, however, pitching a guy 130 pitches in a one or two run game when you are in the race.

    If it was a matter of making the playoffs or not making them, it was worth it. The 2003 team wasn't like 98; there was some serious talent on the 03 team, especially the pitching staff. We need to get a championship before we do anything conservative in a season that could compromise a legit chance at winning one.

I think that many of you are trying to convince yourselves that it was OK, rather than me....... As long as the other person clearly knows you are angry at them, it's fair to hit him without saying anything. Those are pretty much the rules. If you give them a verbal warning that you are about to hit them, you could end up getting hit first or they could duck out of the way, and don't count on them saying anything before they respond either.

    I'd like to see us consolidate a lot of our smaller assets into a couple big ones, even if we have to overpay to do it.
