  1. If he can serve it that last 8 games of the season, that would be the way to go imo.
  2. All in all, that was infuriating to read. Rusch should get the next start. Who would you rather have make that start?
  3. Oh well, we aren't going to be able to get him anyway. In that case, I hope the Royals get him.
  4. Personally, I think 99 was the worst team, at least the worst one I've ever followed. The pitching and hitting were awful. On offense, you had Gaetti (sub .600 OPS), Morandini (sub .700) and Santiago (sub .700). The rotation had names like Bowie and Lorraine....and I was actually excited when we got Bowie and Q from Atlanta because they were elite prospects compared to anything we had remotely close to the big leagues.
  5. He had the ball in his glove but waited until the runner scored before actually tagging him.
  6. No, I don't think this team is as bad as either of those two. Those teams had like 4 or 5 bad AAA players getting a lot of playing time.
  7. He was ahead 1-2 or 0-2 on just about everybody he faced and got a lot of close calls against him in strike out situations. There's nothing wrong with him; he's just in a slump, deadarm, whatever you want to call it.
  8. Well, hopefully he can at least make it through 2 or 3 rehabs starts without getting hurt.
  9. You guys are overracting. Dempster is a great closer and was a great signing. Look at the full body of work. I think a lot people have taken for granted just how good and reliable he has been for us. He's in a slump right now, but it's the first time he has done anything negative since becoming a closer. He'll get through this and rattle off another 10-20 in a row.
  10. But the Dodgers held on and won the division. Would LoDuca and Roberts have made a difference in '06? Give it a rest Jim. Or are you Bill Plaschke? If that team didn't have the benefit of the lead the old Dodgers team created, they would have missed the playoffs. The second version wasn't a playoff team based on how they played. Record before the trade: 60-43, .583 Record after the trade: 33-26, .560 Number of wins a .583 team gets over 59 games: 34 They were pretty much the same team. Except for the fact that the winning percentage the second version of the team had, spread over the course of a full season, would have put them a game back of S.F. and out of the playoffs. There is almost 4 wins difference between the two...isn't that about the impact Lee has on the Cubs over 4 months or so per that article done here awhile back? That's a significant difference, isn't it? You can't project out for the larger sample and assume its accuracy. And even then, it ignores the fact that the trade impacted about 8-12% of the roster, and ignores the fact that you're reneging on your original claim. No, I'm not, in my opinion, he ruined that team and that team would not have made the playoffs alone. The traded players were very valuable to that team.

  13. Why is Murton good all-around? He's got a decent eye and acceptable OBP. But he's got no power, no special speed, nor does he have anything special with the glove. He's been doing pretty well with everything except power since he was brought up. He skipped AAA too. There is a lot of reason to believe he will keep improving.
  14. Dubois is basically Restovich with worse defense. Murton is a good all around and younger.
  15. They weren't wins. They were gambles that didn't work out in our favor. They wound up being washes, or double-losses, whichever way you want to look at it, because in no way did either trade help our team. now i see why some fans think hendry is good. let's look at the dubois trade. we take a sure fire prospect who was absolutley untouchable through the minors- we would not even listen to an offer. we hand him the job of replacing sosa...and even mention that he could be rookie of the year. then by june we give up and we trade him for a hobbled outfielder who limped around for a month...and then trade him for a vet "to be free agent" that you let walk at the end of the year. so you got NOTHING! a guy you would not deal for anything..you trade for ZERO. that is not a good trade, that is not a wash. it is a horrible devaluation of one of your stud prospects, who a year earlier you could have gotten some pretty good value for but instead you get zip, zero, nada We'll, they did screw up in not recognizing Dubois wasn't wasn't very good and trading him earlier when he had more value. As far as where things were when they did trade him, I don't think there was any point to keeping him around. Had he stayed with us, Murton may have never gotten his shot last year.
  16. Trading Lo Duca was stupid because, overrated or not, he was one of the the better cathers in the NL and was replaced with Mayne and Ross IIRC. I'm sure their combined numbers were well below Neifi's career averages. He traded his lefty specialist (Tom Martin) to the Braves, a potential playoff opponent at that. Same with leadoff man Dave Roberts. Say what you will about Roberts and leadoff men, but he was 33 of 34 in steals and putting up his usual, solid .340 OBP at the time of the trades. These were the players that made that team good. They were in first place, playing great baseball and had a nice little lead in the division race. They looked like a legit contender before, and after, it looked like the 98 Cubs: a team you just knew was going to get waxed in the playoffs, and they did.
  17. I thought it was better news than saying he could be the next Mark Fidrych. Yeah, better for whoever he pitches for, but I don't want to see him go through the process Contreras went through to get where he is now in a Cubs uniform and I don't have a lot of faith that everything would work out like that for him given his history.
  18. No to Depodesta. He made stupid trades that ruined a team headed for the playoffs. If we are going to go the Moneyball route, we should go after Beane.
  19. Jose Contreras actually had a similar diagnosis to Prior -- a subscapularis strain of the right shoulder -- in 2003. He ended up missing more than half the season, wasn't as effective in 2004 and of course ended up being traded to the White Sox for Esteban Loaiza amidst talk that he lacked mental toughness. Well, if it's going to take Prior until 2008 to recover from this injury and get back to pitching his best, then it actually might be better to trade him this year. Given the current numbers decline he is already on, the trend continuing would probably lower his value from where it is now. And that's all assuming he doesn't get a completely unrelated injury in the process. That's bleak news.
  20. They weren't wins. They were gambles that didn't work out in our favor. They wound up being washes, or double-losses, whichever way you want to look at it, because in no way did either trade help our team. At the time, any sane individual would have made them though. In they end, they didn't work out, and we didn't lose anything.
  21. Hendry's made some bad moves, but Dubois for Gerut and Gerut for Lawton were two wins. Dubois because he was worthless and Gerut had a history of playing pretty decent when healthy. Lawton because of his numbers at the time of the trade.
  22. Hendry's been an assistant GM. That was his title before GM. I doubt he'd accept a demotion back to that. And I'm not sure I'd want him there. I don't like the idea of Hendry "advising" anyone. We'll, if you demote him, and he doesn't like it; he'll resign. That way they don't have to pay him his contract.
  23. Why not just demote Hendry to an assistant GM position? I'd like to bring in someone fresh like Dayton Moore. Hendry can just be an advisor as he gets a little experience.
  24. Possibly the most lopsided.
  25. My problem isn't with Hendry's trade negotiating; it's that he waits way too long to make a deal, so they don't really help the team much. Getting anything for Patterson was a steal for us, Novoa and Moore are pretty decent prospects and Fansworth was at an all-time low at the time. His problem with trading for players is that he waits too long to get them, and his problem with his own players is that he waits too long to trade them. Patterson and Farnsworth should not have stayed here a game more than they did. They should have been traded two years before they were, and that was clear to a lot of people, just not Hendry.
