I'm not sure how we can assume he will go on the DL. Yea, yea, I know his past - and I probably have some level of blinders on because Woody is my favorite Cub of the last 15 years, but looking at it semi objectively: Wood had TJ surgery in 1999, came back in 2001 and never had elbow problems again. Wood had Shoulder surgery in 2005, he's come back, and how do we know his shoulder problems aren't behind him now too? Prior events to not predict future ones, or something like that. If he pitches this year well, gets a 1 year incentive laden deal and pitches all of next year well, how do you NOT give him a contract? Pitchers with Wood's stuff, desire, and character do not come around everyday. Sure he could go somewhere and toil/convert to a closer etc. But what do you say to yourself if he goes somewhere and returns to being dominant ala 1998, 2001-2003? I'm looking it as the option or a multiyear gauranteed similar to what Burnett got. I'd be shocked if he signed an incentive laden one year deal with the Cubs or anyone else because I can't see why he wouldn't be a very desirable free agent, especially for teams like the Rangers, Astros, Mets, Red Sox and Yankees.
