If in fact the Cubs have been rushing Wood and Prior back during their careers, then they aren't major league pitchers. I'm sorry, but no other two guys of their profile have missed as much time, so for me, to even imply the Cubs weren't extremely careful with them seems absolutely insane.

I never thought about blaming the Cubs coaching staff for Pierre's struggles, but it's no less justifiable than blaming them for Patterson's poor performance, so I guess it isn't Juan's fault afterall.

Win ballgames and you'll win the PR part. Don't forgo a good trade because you aren't fleecing the other team and you have a better chance of winning. It's different in Chicago. Cubs fans have 2 enemies: The Cardinals and White Sox. You may not have to deal w/ the White Sox crap out in CA, but I don't want to deal w/ moronic Sox fans. Good point. They are some of the most obnoxious people on the planet. -

I'd want Zito first and foremost, then if you could get Soriano and either Schmidt or Mulder without compromising a long term deal for Z, I think even if the Cubs did nothing else, they'd be a contender next year. -
Last year the park effects were about equal. I don't know how they'll end up for 06. Well, in his three playoffs years, his home park favored hitters in two.

Mulder just knows how to win. Athletes aren't robots. Some have the ability to rise to the occasion when it counts the most and some often crumble in the same situations. But Mulder hasn't. And you're still ignoring the principle argument that Jocketty got fleeced. One, whatever, you're wrong. And two, when you add a postseason ace to a team that makes the playoffs every year, you are making that move to help you win a world series.

I don't care if a pitcher has a 1.75 WHIP and is 0-7 in 7 starts. If he has a 2.34 ERA, he's getting the job done. Does that mean ERA is the only way to judge a pitcher? I would say ERA has the same value as OPS does to hitters. You can look at the other stats if you want, but in the end, ERA and OPS are what you go by in judging how good a pitcher or hitter is.

Wins and losses don't mean anything. It's about ERA. In that case, Haren has a lower postseason ERA than Mulder. And yes, Haren has pitched in fewer postseason innings than Mulder, but Mulder's 42.1 postseason innings isn't exactly a lot to work with anyways. Haren has 8 relief innings in one postseason. Mulder has 7 starts over 3 postseasons spread out over 5 seasons. Every playoff year he has had an ERA under 2.50. That's a big game pitcher. Well, that wasn't your original point. Or second point. And 42.1 innings of playoff game vs. how average he's been in nearly 300 innings since being traded to the Cards (while Haren has been better during that time)? If you know you are going to playoffs every year, it's huge to have guys you know are going to pitch great when they are there.

I beat you to that prediction. That's how the Cards deal. They don't like to give up their key prospects and players, and they don't. Daric Barton and Dan Haren for Mark Mulder? Curses, Mark. Curses. Mulder made the Cards a better team than they would have been with Haren. We'll see this year. Mulder is very streaky. Barton in the big leagues before he is anything. That's something completely different from what you said earlier - that the Cards don't like to give up their key prospects (Barton was their top prospect at the time of the trade and considered one of the 25-50 best in all of baseball) and that they don't like to give up key players: Haren with the A's: 301 IP, 3.74 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, .243 BAA, 228 Ks, 68 BBs Mulder with the Cards: 286.1 IP, 4.08 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, .260 BAA, 153 Ks, 96 BBs All I'm saying is that I'm not sold on Haren as a No. 2 or No. 1 or even a No. 3 just yet. I want to see more. I know Mulder is very good, and you can't just ignore what he's done in the playoffs.

I'm with you. The kid doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. Save the snark for the truly deserving targets. Yes, but we all knew that was going to happen so it's not much of an observation IMO. -

Mulder and Haren had nearly identical numbers last season. Haren was doing it for roughly the league minimum, while Mulder's salary was much greater. The A's bent over the Joker on that one. I don't think they care if they had to pay more money, they were trying to improve the rotation last year, and they did. We'll see what happens this year. The Cards are a playoff team. They want to have pitchers who are good and experienced pitching in the playoffs. They've been burnt by using young starters in the playoffs in the past. Mulder is one of the best postseason pitchers in baseball, and he pitched excellently once again there for the Cardinals last year.

Huh? His ERA was 5.14 in 28 innings after the trade. That's an ERA+ of 86. And you think the Cubs wouldn't have made the playoffs without him? To the contrary, it's more likely that they would have won the wild card without need for a one game playoff. Oh snap, I missed that post. Karchner was HORRIBLE with a capital HORR as a member of the Cubs. They might as well have brought Jeff Pico out of "retirement". Felix Heredia was better than Karchner. Enough said. All I remember is him being 3-1. I know wins don't matter, but Wengart would have got a lot of his innings, and I think that would have been a disaster. Both had an 86 ERA+ for the Cubs. That stat means nothing in this instance. Wengart was a consistently bad pitcher. Karchner was hot and cold. A consistently bad pitcher is worthless but one that has the odd scoreless performance can help you get an extra game or two. -

Honestly, if we are ignoring everything else and just look at what would be "fair" to the Cubs, he should get the same deal Grissom got this year if he resigns with us.

A lot of people thought Wood and Prior would be healthy this year. Maybe it was just blind optimism.

What do you think the chances are that Wood goes to the Yankees as a FA, they give him a two-year deal, and it turns into gold for both parties? I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he went anywhere else next year and was healthy. Who cares? He's just Pattersoned himself. I don't care if he wins three Cy Youngs in a row with the Cardinals. It's time for him to go, and it's too bad things played out this way. Now we see what happens with Prior this year and possibly cut the cord with him too.
