  1. TCU to the Big 12 now, NOT the Big East. So long, Big East http://brett-mcmurphy.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/29532522/32536916
  2. The fact that a guy like CJ Wilson is going to get over $100MM really makes me sad at the fact that the Cubs had such great, young, cheaper starting pitching in the 2003 range and basically accomplished nothing out of it. Let's hope we can develop some top line starters sometime in the next decade or else our hopes will lie in signing guys like Wilson to these ridiculous contracts and, most of the time, watching them flame out and not pay off their investment (like Mike Hampton, Barry Zito, Denny Neagle, the Zambrano extension, John Lackey, etc...).
  3. Same stadium, too.
  4. Was Rick Wrona from the 1990s? How about Lloyd McClendon?
  5. Tigers Rangers Phillies Brewers Rangers Phillies Rangers
  6. I know that when I think Northwestern football, I think butts in the seats. Usually the opposing team has lots of butts in seats. Illinois' football attendance & following isn't exactly anything to write home about either. It's rather pathetic to be honest with you. For a school with that many alumni and a relatively decent football history, they should have a full stadium and a long list for season tickets. If you think about it, there are several Big Ten schools with football fanbases that are less than what they should be: Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, and Indiana all have pretty weak football fanbases. Now, most of those schools have sucked for a good bit of their history, but they've had good seasons as well.
  7. Ouch Their academic situation is very bad for a flagship institution. They use to have a very good experimental psychology program, but we've decided to stop funding rat labs in this country. I'd like to see ND in the B1G along with Pitt. Both have almost good enough academic standing. The also have natural geographic connections to the rest of the schools. Pitt/Penn State could become a great rivalry. I like how academics are somehow a factor in this. The only reason stuff like that gets brought up is when a school can't generate the $$$ for a conference. If the same exact school as WVU was in NYC, it wouldn't matter what their academic ranking was because they'd be bringing the $$$ with them. What a joke. I find it hard to believe that WVU is a worse school than Mississippi State or something like that.
  8. ESPN Gameday going to Morgantown, WV. That is going to be one hell of a scene after the game if WV wins. Hell, it will be one hell of a scene either way. Those hillbillies can party.
  9. "Are we ever going to have a game that doesn't end on the final play?" Yeah, I heard that, too. If they do, it probably means the world ended. Brilliant insight, Chris.
  10. What in God's name made you think you could buy an airplane ticket the week of your flight for $100? I assume he meant a game ticket for $100. Bingo. Fly to Panama City on Southwest and drive the 2 hours to Tally. Much cheaper usually.
  11. Yeah, it's pretty much a lock. Probably first ballot too. Playing in a huge media market with a strong fanbase and rich history doesn't hurt him either. He's been pretty much the 2nd best inside linebacker in the league for over 10 years (first Lewis, now Willis).
  12. Outstanding.
  13. If the Cubs screw the fans, particularly combo plan holders, with night games April 9, 10, and 11, I'm punching someone. What do you want them to do schedule Monday-Tuesday day games that nobody will attend? In the past, they've generally saved night games for at least the middle to end of April as a courtesy to the fans that have to sit through the cold. That is probably going to end this year.

  15. Well in his defense there's not much need to coddle a 34 year old veteran pitcher. Dempster isn't some young gun who's bullets need saving at this point in his career. But he also let him make the 2nd out in the 7th inning while batting. The only reason Dempster should have taken that at bat would have been if someone had been on base and he sacrificed. Otherwise, he was giving up the 8th to last out in a 1 run game. Terrible.
  16. I definitely do not like the middle part of that scenario. Yeah, overpaying for Pujols, having to root for LaRussa, and banking on a guy who relied on guys magically having career years and winning the WS with an 83 win team is not #1 on my wish list.
  17. That is not correct. The Bears beat the Saints at the Superdome back in the early 90's when Harbaugh was quarterback. I remember that game because Harbaugh was getting killed by the Saints defense all day long but somehow put together a game winning TD drive at the end. Found the box score: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199110270nor.htm That doesn't count. The Bears got lucky and recovered two fumbles. Therefore, the win doesn't count. I remember that game as well. I thought that Harbaugh might die in that game.
  18. And that was before last night...now LaHair is at .500/.565/.950. All kidding aside though, if the Cubs like his bat I think they have the luxury of keeping him on their bench next year. With Barney starting at 2nd, that makes keeping another backup SS unnecessary. Baker and DeWitt can backup pretty much every position besides SS, C, and CF. So you have a backup C, a backup CF (that could be Colvin, Campana, or a free agent), Baker, DeWitt, and that still leaves one bench spot. There's no real need for that to be another defensive backup so the Cubs can afford to put a bat in that spot, and if they think LaHair can put up a .750+ OPS he could be it. Cubs lineup next year if @thekapman created it: Castro SS Barney 2B LaHair 1B Byrd CF Colvin RF LeMahieu 3B Jackson LF Soto C I'm pretty sure that team would lose 100 games. Only about 85 losses with the Phillies pitching staff.
  19. Will we see a similar contract coming for Dempster?
  20. If the Redskins get anything from their offense, they could actually be decent. Now, that is depending on Rex Grossman, a bunch of below average running backs and the senior citizen duo of Santana Moss & Chris Cooley, so it's not likely, but I don't think they'll be as terrible as a lot of people think.
  21. It's a great thing to have cockiness in your own mind. It's not a great thing to tweet it to the detriment of your organization. Also, it helps when your performance backs it up. In Carpenter's case, he hasn't done that.
  22. Which one of Carpenter's terrible big league outings made him think this way? Get bent, kid. You're a dime a dozen minor leaguer/fringe major leaguer with a 98 MPH fastball. Good for you, there's probably about 10 other guys in the organization with the same gripe about not being called up.
  23. This is the second time in a month that ESPN has done this too. No shock that they delayed showing the second live event until the first one is done. In this case, I don't see how it's ESPN's fault that they have had so much rain in Atlanta. That and Nascar likely will get better ratings than an international friendly vs. Belgium. And that's not even counting the unemployed Nascar fans likely to be home on Tuesday afternoon.
  24. oh Lord was that stuff ever bad. also horrendous: black label, koch's golden anniversary. as a connoisseur of bad beers, i'm intrigued by the talk of big flats and would like to try it. Depending on where you live, your local Walgreens is the place to go. It's Walgreens' private label beer. They recently introduced a light version. Here's what I'd compare them to: Big Flats: Busch Heavy Big Flats Light: High Life Light Here's a word of advice: make sure they are ice cold. If they get even a bit warm, they get pretty bad pretty quick.
