  1. Did Wood have an option that vested last night? This isn't about Wood and his contract. People are bemoaning the fact that this topic was brought up, that too big a deal is made of it. Well, its relevant due to the current circumstances, and its relevant because this is a Cubs' message board. Listen, your points regarding Wood may be valid. Lord knows that this organization doesn't limit itself to one mistake a year. An argument may have merit that Wood's contract is a bigger drag on the organization. Fine. That doesn't eliminate the fact that Maddux's option vested and, therefore, is ripe for discussion without the lamenting that the issue was raised.
  2. Move on? What a great philosophy! Living with an overpaid player instead of critiquing the value of the deal or the competency of the decision does make for a more enjoyable Cub fan experience. I mean, why would it at all be material to a Cubs board to create a post denoting that its aging pitcher with deteriorating skills just vested an option making him one of the highest paid player on the team? It provides no insight into the organization's skills in evaluation and negotiation. Having locked up another rotation spot has no bearing on the offseason pursuit of free agents or the promotion of farm hands. I don't know where my head was. Perhaps I, too, can find some sand to bury it in.
  3. My animosity is toward Hendry for once again overpaying for underperformance. Exactly. This is an issue that probably is more relevant to the Cubs' poor planning and lack of vision. Maddux's option for 400 innings wasn't ever really in question. Being the icon that he is, Maddux was never going to be sat down, no matter how much he struggled. In addition, his injury history (or lack thereof) and his yearly accumulated innings numbers left little doubt that Maddux's option would vest. Maddux's $9M in 2006 can't be justified as money the Cubs expect him to earn. Even if you average out his salary for 3 years, $8M is too much to have expected to spend on him. The Cubs are paying for past performance and will likely suffer for it.
  4. Steve Nebraska was no Johnny Utah.
  5. As with Griffey's luck, recent reports are that his foot injury is so bad that he is done for the year. That won't help his trade value.
  6. Yuck. It took everything I had to start that word with a "y".
  7. Not to worry. He will probably get an extension and raise.
  8. After Sammygate: Dusty - "I called Sammy." Sammy - "No, he didn't." After Zambrano got tossed: Dusty - "I talked to Z." Z - "Dusty never talked to me." After Zambrano taken out of game: Dusty - "He was hurt." Z - "No, I wasn't." After Prior removed from game: Dusty - "His leg was hurt." Prior - "It was?" Sorry I don't have linked quotes. If I have time, all go though our archives here.
  9. How's the dog's range in the OF(fetch)? He blew out my shoulder if that tells you anything. And, no, I don't throw like a girl. Anymore...
  10. Personally, I explore trading Lee. Sure, its a gamble. But, its selling high that the Cubs rarely take advantage of. Lee has tailed off here late in the season to production that is more in line with his career norms. If memory served, he slumped somewhat badly last year at the end, too. I don't want that in playoff drives should the Cubs be in the hunt again. If Lee trading Lee could land a high-end OFer, I'd do it. I would then take part of my cash surplus and figure out a way to bring Todd Helton to Wrigley. His lefty bat would provide balance and ease the need to get a big lefty bat in the OF. I think Lee is a great guy. But, keeping the Cubs' interest in mind, I think his trade value may be best for the Cubs right now.
  11. Patterson needs to get away from the game. Let his brain re-boot. If he goes to Winter Ball, he should make drastic changes. Maybe open his stance to better see the ball? I'm not sure, but what he is doing now isn't working. At all. I still contend that you sit him at the plate and have a pitching machine drill 1000 pitches a day off the plate and high and fine him every time he takes a swing. Better yet, use my dog's old shocker collar for negative reinforcement. Now, my dog doesn't jump on people or swing at high outside strikes.
  12. I agree. There are no quality OF free agents out there. I like Giles, but would rather start using our farm system to produce established MLers like Manny. Who wouldn't? Manny is an elite, special player. Guys like Manny aren't developed as much as identified and drafted. Instead, our scouting department gets enamored with guys like Ryan Harvey, who can hit a ball 500 ft., but with significantly less consistency.
  13. By my count, Maddux will likely vest into his $9M option tonight. In 2004: 213.2 innings So far in 2005: 184.2 innings That is a total of 398.1 innings. As such, he is 1.2 innings away from vesting at 400 innings. Barring a complete shelling by the Cards, Maddux should cement his 2006 legacy as the most expensive 5th starter in the league.
  14. Save No. 5 for Farnsworth last night. I think we can officially say that Jim Hendry's "Bad Guy Purge" was a disaster.
  15. But most of it is patented Baker excuse making. Young players have made errors and mental mistakes throughout the history of baseball. Not only that, errors are a part of the game by all players, young and old alike. After all, the common box score of Runs, Hits and Errors didn't just pop up in the '90s. However, fundamental lapses have hamstrung Dusty's Cub tenure. In 2003, the pitchers were awful when fielding the ball. In 2004, Alou, and other regulars, were commonly doubled off base. In 2005, its been generally bad from pitchers covering first to missing signs. Instead of acknowledging the shortcomings of his team, Dusty instead harkens back to his San Fransisco days, or even better, laments the lack of fundamentals throughout the league. (My mom, of course, would reply, "Well, if the whole league jumped off the cliff, would you follow?") Dusty is an absolute baby who does not accept any responsibility. This is just another excuse pattern he is developing to go along with: -media -fans -wind -Wrigley Field -day games -heat -inexperienced young players -schedule. It is darn near pathological at this point. Dusty is indefensible, and I have no problem with anyone ever starting a thread that points to a new Cub related topic, in this case, Dusty's most recent comments.
  16. Not making mistakes because the bad choices were removed does not make you good at anything.
  17. I, unfortunately, do not share that opinion. I could easily see the Cubs go with Neifi, at least as a primary SS option. If Dusty has Neifi available to him, he will use him far more often than is reasonable. I think Walker is also doing his best to get shown the door. If so, you can bet, at the very least, Neifi will be at 2B or SS. It wouldn't surprise me if Neifi was the starting SS, and Cedeno and Walker platooned at 2B.
  18. A Wrigley Field prohibition on anecdotes that don't make any sense.
  19. Maybe Dusty is one of Garvey's 7 million illegitimate children.
  20. I can't begin to communicate how disgusted I am with this organization. The closer these extensions come to reality, the more likely I will place my affections for this organization in hibernation until a new regime takes control. I mean, if this organization is so hindered that it fails to identify and address shortcomings of its leaders, why should I invest me time in it? I don't feel like its abandonment as much as it seems like I'm being pushed away by incompetence and stupidity. This regime has lost its way. I am confident that the millions of dollars available this offseason will be spent in ways that further hamper this organization's chances to claw its way out of futility. Big money contracts to low talent players will stunt the ability to make the team better should better talent later become available. Likewise, inept managing, tantamount to baseball malpractice, will continue to [expletive] development and carelessly mismanage rotation and bullpen arms. If the suits had any sense, they would cut MacPhail off before he ushers in the vanguards of mediocrity for another go around. Continuity of leadership is only effective when that leadership is competent.
  21. That was one of the funniest moments I've seen in baseball. Prior probably would've been killed by Barry if he charged the mound, but he stood his ground anyway. Prior needs to get that swagger back.
  22. I hope Prior brushes him back.
  23. Which makes me wonder why anyone would trade for Atlanta's pitchers or their pitching prospects. Other than Jason Schmidt, I'm trying to think of impact pitchers that they let go who then had success after leaving. From the wayback machine, didn't Paul Assenmacher come from the Braves? He was a very effective loogy for some bad Cub teams, IIRC. Good call. But I'll call him the exception rather than the rule until we come up with other names. Without question. I was just trying to see if I could come up with someone. Further, he came to the Cubs in '89, before Atlanta got things together. I don't even know if Scheurholz was in place then.

  25. Farnsworth tallied his 4th save last night and looked nasty doing it. His ERA is hovering somewhere a little over 1.00, and his WHIP is less than 1.00. I don't guess I have to mention Novoa's effort yesterday.
