  1. One thing I have always appreciated about Maddux is his class. I give him credit for recognizing that his retirement speculation was gaining unwarranted air time and he stiffled it. He could easily have let things ride over the offseason, but he isn't the type of guy that needs that kind of focus.
  2. Rather worthless commentary on my part, but this is a fun debate to watch.
  3. you may as well just make that your sig. i'm right about pretty much everything. I'd sooner take sensitivity lessons from Goony.
  4. I agree with Abuck.

    So, Bruce...

Unless it ended with Baker being fined his 2005 salary for complete ineptitude, and Perez being fined $100 for every walk below the league average he didn't take, I can't think of a more unproductive meeting. :P And I am dissapointed it wasn't like an Amway presentation from Oneri Flieta. Macias: Ok, guys. I have this great idea. I'll be the "captain" and I'll have 5 "co-pilots" who will pay me $100,000 each. They will each enlist 10 "passengers" who will pay them...

    So, Bruce...

You weren't subject to being fined in absentia for your constant violations of touting OBP in your articles, were you?

    So, Bruce...

    Pampered Chef?
  8. Such as?? Choi?? I think you know better. But, I've underestimated people before...
  9. What was the pre-game meeting about last night? Was it just general, "Lets end the season with our heads high," or something more specific?
  10. Stat upon stat to support our opinions or stat upon stat to support the facts? If stats equal fact, then Baker's a good manager and there year's an aberration. Stats do equal facts. However, that does not preclude people from purposely or accidentally misapplying them to suit their needs, an example of which was demonstrated earlier in this thread.
  11. Misleading stat. That assessment includes Nomar (191 ABs), Cedeno (80) and Valdez (13) in that mix. Among shortstops with at least 200 ABs this season, Neifi ranks 13th out of 20 in OPS (.692) and .002 lower would have him in 16th out of 20 among shortstops with 200 ABs (3 guys have an OPS of .691) Stupid subjective numbers! Hold it...
  12. If Choi is struggling with 15 homers, hitting .257 with a .336 OPB in about 300 ABs, I'd better never see you shower praise on Neifi Perez again.
  13. Hughes scares the bejesus out of me.
  14. Dubois has played all this year at 26, and spent 4 years(not exactly an eternity) in the minor leagues. The comparisons are there, Dusty handled their successes nearly the exact same way. Fortunately, Murton hasn't faltered yet so we haven't seen what he'll do if that happens. In the context of the main debate of this thread, regarding Dusty's handling of players who weren't established positional players in the majors, I think Dubois' situation is very relevant.
  15. Maybe its not the case, but, for the most part, I'd expect the majority of scouts and instructors to follow the philosophy of the organization's general manager. From an outsider's perspective, baseball organizations appear to be regemented top-down models. Maybe that is an obvious point, I don't know.
  16. There was a closed door meeting before the game last night. Think of how bad the loss would have been without Dusty's motivational tactics.
  17. If you're lucky, it will be a Roman lion which will go for the most Christian person regardless of speed. Obviously, Robertson is more Christian than you. (Just ask him). You'd be in the clear.
  18. What is the over/under of the #2 hitter bunting the runner on 1B to 2B and then the oppsition walking Lee? You don't want Burnitz up there w/ 2 men on?? I mean his .213 RISP average is stellar. :( A good cleanup man could have made a huge difference this year. The signing of Burnitz may be Hendry's worse move in the past 3 years. I'm not a Hendry fan, but I wouldn't go that far. However, if Jim picks up his $7M option, I reserve the right to revisit my answer.
  19. You never had it so good.
  20. You keep saying this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
  21. Oh, I didn't mean to imply he was the same person. He has adeptly picked up where ZZ left off, however.
  22. I don't know about the rest of you, but the things that are really upsetting to me are: Top 5 payroll, bottom half of the league results. 1908 - the drought, not the moderator. The lack of attention to the lack of walks taken by hitters and excess of walks given by pitchers - by far, the two biggest reasons for lack of team success. 74-77. I was going to make some stupid Mets joke, but realized something: Are the Cubs and Mets somewhat parallel organizations right now? Vastly underperforming in light of their payrolls? Treading water, switching visions midstream? It sort of feels that way.
  23. It also sounds oh so familiar. Kind of makes you tired, doesn't it? Zzzzzz...
  24. You know what CW is don't you?? If not, this may effect your #2 status on the board. :o Conventional Wisdom. If you want to play the martyr and hold yourself out to be the one shining objective person on the board in the face of group think fanatics, go ahead. I think its laughable that you identify a couple of posts as "conventional wisdom" of the board. Such flip comments very much discount the varied opinions and posts that people contribute. Perhaps someone didn't see or chose not to post in whatever thread or group of threads you are referencing regarding Aurilia and Feliz. Or, rather, perhaps they saw it and chose not to contribute because they simply weren't interested. Either way, commentary promoting oneself as a fighter against group think, conventional wisdom, or whatever the phrase may be is ridiculous. Objectively speaking, that is.
  25. What is "NSBB CW"?
