  1. ANOTHER crappy outing for Brownlie. Uncle...
  2. But, then what happens to Dusty's 2005 motto, "No Worries"? The Cubs must be leading the league in unrealized mottos by now.
  3. I know there is a lot of interest in him here, but I expect Giles to be a Padre next year.
  4. Confront? Dusty would never use a word like that. Try "jack him up" instead.
  5. Once upon a time there was a diminutive man named Donald. He liked to play baseball. He was mighty fast. One day, while playing baseball, he was spotted by three bears. Cubs, actually. When spring came, the Cubs invited Donald to play with them. Donald agreed, but said he would only do so if the Cubs called him Corey. Everyone was happy. The end.
  6. Onion paper, at that.
  7. Man, I hope you are kidding here.
  8. Does Hendry fly first class? I'd think he would.
  9. Can we make a trade? That Yankees team is tailor made for Dusty. All veterans when healthy, etc., etc. I honestly don't think there is a high end market for Dusty. Say what you will about the Yankee front office, but they do have smart people there. It is painfully evident to everyone on earth that Dusty is hypersensitive to criticism. There is no way they would consider Dusty Baker to manage the Yanks into mediocrity. Heck, there was no market for Baker three years ago. It doesn't appear that the Mets ever had serious interest despite the rumors that existed at the time. While this may not have been a serious suggestion, I don't see any way that the Yanks would be interested in Baker.
  10. Lets not forget, the 2003 squad was hovering around .500 at the ASB and just completed, or was in the midst, of another terrible losing streak. That 88 win season was way, way overhyped. 88 wins is nothing to get excited about. That record was due to a late season surge. Had the season not ended when it did, it is very, very possible the Cubs would have evened their record out again.
  11. Just an observation, but Corey has gotten progressively worse for 3 straight years under Baker and his staff's watchful eyes. He showed a brief increase in productivity during his AAA stint, which could be accounted for by the instruction or the opposing talent. I like to think that I try to keep Corey in perspective. The truth is, on my pre-NSBB days on ESPN, I openly advocated to trade Corey for Beltran. That being said, I think he has shown enough ability that the idea of just jettisoning him for trash is absurd. A small part of my distaste for Baker has always been that I didn't think he was good for Corey. I may be wrong, but I think Corey is a mentally fragile player and was done a disservice with his role changing at a fairly constant rate.
  12. With MacPhail now appearing as Hendry's enabler, this offseason is worrisome. I've been a pretty consistent MacPhail supporter, but I now just see him as an undersized rudder. He tried to provide direction, but it wasn't enough.
  13. I wonder if the Phils waivered at all or if they were looking to get the pot sweetened? I would love to have had Padilla. Isn't he Venezuelian? If so, it might have produced a nice little friendly rivalry between he and Zambrano. Oh well.
  14. I wouldn't mind one of them either, provided we had a proper bench of 6 guys and they were the true 25th man. But, to have two redundant players (perhaps even 3 with the return of Hairston while Nomar, Corey and Walker are getting the lion's share of PT at their positions), it is absolutely insane to have them all on the team. They are the same player, with minor variences in positional strength.
  15. Link The Sun-Times address your question, but doesn't really answer it. In my opinion, if you are going to create this so-called "surplus", then you trade it for young positional talent, not over-the-hill stop gaps. At the same time, I don't really see that this surpless has even emerged. The Rule V draft prohibits you from stockpiling ML-ready arms (lest Andy forget the Sisco Fiasco). Its all double talk. I no longer have much use for MacPhail.
  16. I wonder if MacPhail looks at the payroll number including or excluding the Sosa salary for this year. I sure hope he's referring to the 100+ million not the 85ish million like some sources like to report as the payroll for this year. IIRC, I believe MacPhail has previously referenced the $100M payroll.
  17. Link The good news -- the payroll should remain the same (that is, it won't get reduced): Of course, the burning questions remain: 1) Will the money be used wisely? and 2) If the talent isn't there, will management have enough sense to put the money back in their pocket for a rainy day? The bad news -- MacPhail seems to be missing the point that if you develop Rookies of the Year, it would be nice if they played on your team, as Bruce points out:
  18. It may have been less than his ERA.
  19. and it's him replying to himself. I suspect he does a lot of things for himself.
  20. MacPhail's most recent vote of confidence for Hendry and Baker. I think a most interesting aspect of this article is his reference to 2001. He says he thought they turned the corner at that point, implying that 2002 was a disappointment. Well, sorry Andy, but that team was an implosion waiting to happen. His failure to recognize that fact is ominous for 2006, with the likes of Neifi, Macias, etc., possibly returning (redundant though they are). Baker and Hendry are likely safe unless the Cubs are subject to another painful losing streak.
  21. Uh-forget the Brownlie optimism. He just got lit up for 4 more runs. I had to say something.... :wall:
  22. With the rumor last week arising out of Boston that 50 players or whatever were positive, I wouldn't be surprised if a Red Sox player was in jeopardy. Where there is smoke, after all, there is fire...
  23. It looks like Brownlie gave up an unearned run be looking up at a 2-1 deficit. My boy is sporting a pretty nice line through 5 innings: 4 hits, BB, 4 Ks, 1 earned run. ERA is down to 4.12.
  24. This is what I was referencing: Just seemed a little weird.
