  1. Its really stunning how terrible MLB is at bringing in quality ownership. Granted, Loria came on board with the hapless Expos whom nobody wanted and MLB was desperate for an owner, but contraction would have been a better option. Then, you have the more recent failure in ownership selection by the clown who bought the Dodgers. Luckily, they seemingly struck gold with Moreno. But, he is not without his detractors as he makes his enemies in the Anaheim area. I honestly get amazed every time I think about how rich the owners are with some of the god awful decisions they have made over the years.
  2. Even if the Cubs packed the line-up top to bottom with terrific players, I'd still worry about that first round of injuries and management's inability to recognize team needs and winning baseball. Being able to fill out a proper line-up card by default doesn't cure the ills of poor management. Thus, I'm relegated to not only hoping the Cubs improve the quality of players in their line-up, but also that those same players stay healthy. I'd also like $25 million while I'm asking for the moon...
  3. My attendance at Cubs road games will surely double. Which would, in turn, provide the additional benefit of reducing your frighteningly large losses at the craps table.
  4. Pavano didn't make it in New York? Color me unsurprised.
  5. I suppose its little surprise, but I'd willingly take Hill for a bench spot.
  6. We're number 3! We're number 3! Sounds kind of like what we can expect in the National League Central standings for the next few years...
  7. Interesting that the Cubs are bidding against the Braves for Furcal, with the Braves being an organization the Cubs ought to try to emulate. Yet, the only way the Cubs get Furcal is if they outbid the Braves, essentially with the Braves conceding Furcal isn't worth the cost the Cubs are willing to pay. Of course, the Braves may not wish to meet the Cubs' price because their existing offense and/or short stop replacement are adequate for their needs. That, in turn, begs the question whether the Cubs are hamstringing themselves and their future, to some extent, with an exorbitant contract to Furcal. Again, with such behavior being contrary to the Brave model. Ah, offseason craziness.
  8. I just saw a highlight of his appearance, but it looked like Woody was on the David Wells offseason diet.
  9. Double the motivation! You can hold me to that too. This may well be my favorite NSBB wager of all time.
  10. Yeah, I also remember hearing that McCourt could barely afford a new Buick, let alone an upmarket MLB team. This news tends to lend credence to those reports, as I highly doubt the team's revenue stream has dried up nearly this much. So why would MLB allow someone without much in the way of liquidity to purchase a major market team? Your post assumes that MLB makes consistently good decisions. The contraction nightmare, growing evidence that it looked the other way with steroids, and the wart that is the ownerless Washington Nationals is evidence to the contrary.
  11. IIRC, the McCourt ownership group was heavily leveraged when they purchased the Dodgers. It seemed like that sale went on forever as MLB delved pretty deeply into the finances. The most responsible thing they could do for payroll purposes is trade Drew to the Cubs.
  12. Personally, I like to see KC keep him on the roster, watch him get BOMBED and gloat in front of people who thought Sisco would be anything special. But hey.....that's just me. Looking forward to gloating? Wow. I'm glad this site allows us to share such lofty, admirable goals.
  13. One thing Hendry doesn't generally do is play his cards close to the vest when going after someone. The only reason the Lee trade was such a surprize is because the deal with Baltimore fell through. What was the deal with BAL supposed to be? All I remember is getting an e-mail from cubs.com that said "Choi for Lee" and wondering why the heck we could get DLee for a guy who'd just sucked it up for us in 03. Baltimore was chasing Lee. Hard. When Hendry got wind that that fell through, he jumped on Lee. By Hendry's own admission, it happened very quick. In fact, I think he once claimed he woke up the morning of the trade and it came to him and he simply followed up on it. I confess that while the Lee trade took me by surprise, the shock wore off pretty quickly. Everyone knew that Florida was looking to move him for salary purposes.
  14. Remember being optimistic about Brownlie, Ryu, Guzman, Pinto and Sisco? We'll be lucky if one of them gets to our big league club. Well, we know one of those pitchers is major league caliber...
  15. Any interest the Cubs would have in Benson or Trachsel, hell, even with interest in Burnett at this point, is a damning indictment of the state of the farm system.
  16. Or, they just have a difficult time seeing him at the plate.
  17. And that is because they shipped him to ESPN2... I was referring to the ESPN umbrella. He's propping up the Deuce. I know. I was just giving your misguided man love the business.
  18. Yes they have. I'd really like to see where. Results from the search function tend to support CPatt.
  19. And that is because they shipped him to ESPN2...
  20. I'm glad we got a maturity lesson from someone who employs Hee Flop Choi and DoPo with such authority.
  21. Finally. A religion I feel comfortable tithing to. Can I tithe to it too, as a Cards fan? Even though Matt Morris is on UK's list of most loathsome baseball players? I always appreciate UK's baseball wisdom. I've never heard of a religion that turns down money, regardless of the donor. The First Congregation of UK is likely no different.
  22. The confluence of Wrigley, WGN, Harry, and Ryno. Not necessarily in that order.
  23. Two words: Michael Irvin.
  24. Finally. A religion I feel comfortable tithing to.
  25. I wonder what Neifi will do for the talent portion of the contest. obviously catch the ball. or get on base 29% of the time. Impersonate Jose Macias?
