  1. It is. Lou gave Fontenot a test drive at SS last year (spring training?). He actually showed decent range, but his arm is not strong at all. Maybe a statement like this forshadow's a push for a SS on the market? I think it is a "puffy chest" to lower the perceived "Cub need" of a target SS (at least in the eyes of his agent/team).
  2. I love Kerry Wood, I really do - but is this really such a bad transaction? Wood is probably going to get what, around $7-10 million a year? Would he get that much as a setup guy? Moving Marmol to the closer role or putting Gregg there for $3-5 million isn't such a bad idea if you are going to be dishing out to get another 1-2 starter and maybe a resigning one. If we land Peavy and Dempster....
  3. Can't that be said of any pitcher with a large contract, though? That same statement can be applied to Zambrano, Santana, Sabathia (when he signs). I would say Zito but it'd almost be worth it to pay him to not pitch Pretty much, yeah. I wish it were the norm for teams to offer decent base contracts for pitchers LOADED with incentives that could make them rich dependant on performance & durability.
  4. Peavy's contract scares the hell out of me. I don't care how good of a pitcher he is, one blown out elbow and we are eating a hell of a salary for a LONG time.
  5. He very well may go into the Hall with a Braves hat, but I will always associate Maddux with the Cubs.
  6. SS Furcal RF Abreu LF Soriano 3B Ramirez 1B Lee CA Soto 2B DeRosa CF Fukudome
  7. I wouldn't say that Soriano's skills are diminishing - I'd say he has been dealing with a few injuries. He is the same streaky hitter that he has always been, and he still puts up numbers. You just better hope that he is hot at the right time.
  8. I have a lot in common with Ted Williams: both love hitting, two arms, one head....... wait.....
  9. Wasn't he a converted infielder or something? I do remember he had a big curveball, right? Man, that is tough to hear. He was a decent pitcher, always wondered what happened with him... May his memory be eternal.
  10. Wow. That is pretty humiliating. Way to represent. I guess sometime you just have to realize that MLB players are made up of kids who are under 25, juiced up junkies, etc. I dunno - I suppose it never crosses a professional athlete's mind that they represent a CITY, and an entire fanbase.
  11. Pretty much everyone who knows me is aware that prodding with me is not really a good idea. My brother in law and cousin made the mistake of saying "What time is tonights game" and "how bout them Cubbies." They listened and backed off.
  12. While CF certainly may be an area the Cubs can upgrade, the platoon of Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds was cheap and extremely productive. As CFers, here is their combined line: .294 avg 496 AB 86 R 146 H 35 2B 22 HR 88 RBI 60 BB .370 ob% That isn't real bad for a low price (or high). I'd consider sticking with it and upgrading SS and getting another starting pitcher.
  13. "Coal to Diamonds in 3" "Just Do It"
  14. I'm sorry, but this doesn't even come CLOSE to the pain I felt in 2003. This naturally sucks bad, but 2003 was gutwrenching pain - probably what childbirth feels like out of the stink star. And the baby weighed 35 pounds.
  15. I'm not mad, this just really sucks. I mean really. You all know what I am talking about. Not really angry about anyone particularly - just mad that the Cubs were the team on the short end of the stick, the team that was not playing good baseball. The Dodgers are playing great, you have to give them credit. It just really sucks that the Cubs never got it going, except for the 9th inning of game 2. It'll set in, but this was a team failure, not an individual one. Actually, the starting pitching was pretty good outside of Dempster (who has been money all year) - the offense was just pathetic. Misery. Cubs. Synonymous. Did I spell that right?
  16. Jeez people - this is baseball. It doesn't matter anymore who did what in the season. There are 4 NL teams in this - ALL with the same chance. Head to heads don't matter anymore. Who won what doesn't matter. How many WC teams have won the WS? Plenty. It's about who is playing good baseball at this point. The Cubs are not playing good baseball. It's not over yet.
  17. Have any of you guys ever played while being pissed off? It's kinda a boost...
  18. Looking at the bright side - it seems they have finally loosening up. Too bad it took 17 innings and 2 losses. It was good to see them use the approach at the plate (9th inning "rally") that got them to the playoffs, instead of the "2006" method they used in those first 17 innings. I could see them pulling a Boston and winning the next 3....
  19. I love the song, since the first time I heard it last year during the playoffs. It pretty much sums up what it means to be a Cub fan. Word.
  20. The strike zone was pretty tight. Not to make excuses, but some of Demp's pitches in the first couple innings looked pretty good, IMO - yet they were called balls. Oh well....
  21. Was it as pathetically quiet as it seemed on TV? Why aren't we going bonkers from opening pitch? This IS the post season, right?
  22. I have no reservations saying that the White Sox "blackout" by the fans was bad ass. In comparison to our fan's level of excitement (at least what we saw on TV), it was embarrassing to say the least. It was worth mentioning. We should prove them wrong....
  23. OMC - you are absolutely right about the Braves fans around here. When I was growing up, it was the Braves and the Cubs because of TBS and WGN. As we all know, the Braves sucked until the 90's - which is when they all made the exodus out of the woodwork. "Oh, I've loved the Braves since Dale Murphy, etc." Whatever. My mom is from the Southside, and she and most of my family are Sox fans. I didn't care until I fell in love with the Cubbies in the summer of 89. WGN used to be incredible, and when you could watch every Cub game it sure did help fuel the fire. I can't believe now that WGN is just as much Sox as it is Cubs. Shameful.
