  1. This is what I don't get about TV networks and studio hosts. They pour so much money into these guys, and so many of them are so bad, but people do not turn into games for the hosts. No matter what MNF host was in the booth the past 20 years (during the cable/internet/other media boom) people kept watching in decreasing numbers. NFL fans are not tuning into NFL games for the guys in the booth. While they might think the players add an aura of credibility to the job of analyzing the game, most people who know about the game think most of these guys suck. I'm guessing the amount of money they have to throw at pro athletes to get them to agree to take these jobs is much more than what they'd have to pay some complete unknown who has some background in broadcasting a solid understanding of the game. They have to be able to find good young cheap guys to do this job. And I don't see how it could possibly hurt the ratings.
  2. People forget the damage done by wasting a middle of the order spot on Burnitz. The guy sucked in comparison to what a 4/5 hitting RF should give a team. His numbers were not as bad as the 1/2 holes, but they were as bad when put into context of the position. The difference was that the 1/2 problem could have been alleviated by simply not using the worst possible options (Patterson, Neifi, Macias) as often as they were used, while the 4/5 spot occupied by Burnitz had no real replacement options, and that is why RF was such a necessary to fill hole.
  3. Walker has been banged up throughout his career. What makes you think nobody would be happy? I realize the risk that he wouldn't fulfill the last year of a 3 year deal. But this is a team that needs to win now. Giles makes their lineup so much better right now. This isn't a lazy and inconsistent Alou with inflated Enron numbers we're talking about. Giles has been a consistently great player year after year.
  4. Completely different. He didn't have the money, or the glaring hole that Hendry had. STL has the benefit of already being a great team, with recent history of significant success, and a solid lineup. Yes they needed a RFer, but not nearly as bad as the Cubs needed a RFer. And again, Hendry had more money to throw at his problems.
  5. That's not significant at all. The talk all along was 3/30. There was talk of the Yanks at 3/30. And the Toronto talk was shot down quicker than the Zambrano/Prior for Abreu talk. He didn't end much quicker than others (same as Ryan). The elite free agents usually sign early.
  6. I don't see the payroll room, nor do I see the payoff. At this point you have to overpay the guy just to get him to keep playing. Sure he should be good for an excellent 150 IP or so, but is that worth the $15m-18m you'd have to pay? The little nagging injuries are picking up a bit as well. The Cubs haven't done much to improve this year, and this would make them better without mortgaging the future, so I wouldn't complain, but I'm not that's big on the idea.
  7. I think those standings are pretty questionable. They pretty much just bring everybody closer to the mean. On a RS/RA basis the Cubs finished as expected.
  8. I think he actually likes the look of the team and thinks people like Rusch and Neifi are great assets and that Jones, Pierre, Howry and Eyre will make a huge difference. Remember, the vast majority of opinion among the conventional wisdom crowd was that Neifi saved the Cubs last year, had a great season and proved worthy of the investment Hendry made in him. Likewise, Rusch was another reclamation project of Jim's who showed glimpses from time to time. Jim thinks he found diamonds, probably got praise from the scouting community for "seeing something there" and may just feel obligated to reward those players for coming through for him. This is a team that values left handedness over ability, and versatility over production. They don't look at guys in the lower to mid 30's as in decline. They're seasoned pros who now "know what it takes".
  9. I'd like to say they're a lock to be better, but I can't yet. They should be a little better. But I'm not sure they'll look any better in February than they did last February, and I wasn't happy last February. It's tough to say with all the ifs and questions. Was is not in question is that they are not better "enough". If "enough" means being able to justify their status as a big market team that had some obvious holes that needed to be filled. I guess they could be improved enough to contend in the NL Central this year, but that's not good enough for me. I see no reason why this team can't be a near lock for 90 wins and a good bet for 95. But with the moves made so far, it'll take a series of miracles to get to 95.
  10. why did giles sign a huge contract with pittsburgh in the first place, then? Giles was tearing up the league back then and who did SD have in RF? Giles signed a below market contract 1 year after getting traded to Pittsburgh. It's not like he had any allegiance there. What does tearing up the league have to do with anything? When you're elite you'll play anywhere, but when you're just very good you'll only play at home? SD was a last place team with crap in their OF when Giles signed with Pitt, certainly he could have waited for free agency and gone there if it was all about family. I don't deny that socal played a part, but I will argue with anybody who pretends the Cubs had no chance to get him. They didn't even try. You don't know if you have a chance if you don't try.
  11. Dawson is overrated. He received an MVP he didn't deserve, and gets pub for the Hall which he's not worthy of, especially by Cubs fans.
  12. And you know I'm wrong how? The Cubs didn't try. They could have got him if they tried hard enough, the question is only how hard did they have to try. With this line of reasoning, the Cubs should never even try to bid for any free agent with ties to a warmer climate that has a local team. That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
  13. :?: if there were a GG for each position, LF, CF, RF rather than just 3 CFers, he would have gotten one. does that answer your question? No way, he doesn't hit enough to get a gold glove.
  14. The fact is you don't know they couldn't have got him, because they didn't even try for him, or at least try hard enough to create a ripple in the hot stove news ocean. Curt Schilling said he'd never go to Boston. Theo recruited him heavily, sold him on the team, and paid big time for him. Hendry has gone after nothing but 2nd and 3rd tier (or worse) players all offseason.
  15. Oh please. Where were the Yankees going to play him? They lost money last year, are cutting payroll this year, and needed a CF, not a RF. The Cards aren't spending any money, and aren't as desperate as the Cubs for an impact bat. All the talk was for 3/30, and that's what he got. 3/33 would have got your foot in the door, 3/45 probably would get you the difference maker. And he wasn't the only one. The freaking excuses for this pathetic front office are troubling to me. Why are fans working so hard to make up reasons why this front office should receive a free pass for their continued failures?
  16. San Diego almost lost him. There was a 2 week period when they pretty much stopped talking to each other. That's when you pounce. And guys move their families all the time, whether or not they are already rich. Ice cold Wrigley? It's freaking hot most of the season, and players don't have to live there in the offseason, their families don't even always follow them during the season.
  17. I think it is absolutely ridiculous to assume that you can't get a guy. I believe practically any team could get practically any player if they wanted him bad enough, and that the way they show how badly they want him is via the recruiting process and the offer. It's pretty safe to say that if the Cubs had any recruiting process with Giles, it was minimal, and there was no significant offer made. That is where the fault lies, not with the fans who saw an enormous hole, an obvious solution, and plenty of resources to get it done. Top payroll team's fans shouldn't have to settle for mediocrity in as many positions as Cubs fans see mediocrity.
  18. We know Rusch sucks, makes no sense to keep trotting out the guy when somebody can be better.
  19. I think that is an absurd statement. Fans of a 100m payroll team can't be accused of setting their sights too high when there were RF available and the team had roughly $30m to spend, and a huge hole in RF. This is the same type of reasoning that fans should be happy with back to back +.500 seasons.
  20. The only thing going against him is there is no way the Yankees bid for him, and I highly doubt Boston wants a guy who busted in the Bronx. But with all the money going out to second tier pitchers, I'm sure he can rake in a 3/27 at least.
  21. I'd be all for that, but I don't think there's anyway he'll be that patient and reasonable.
  22. Weaver reminds me of a slightly better Dreifort, asking for insane money for the potential that he's never put into results.
  23. I can't believe I haven't heard anybody else talk about this part of the play. That was just so stupid.
  24. No kidding. It wasn't just 87 that his OBP was missing, it was most of his career. He had a good OBP once or twice. He spent about 10 years as a middle of the order power hitter, and had 100 RBI only 4 times. He was really no better than Harold Baines or Dave Parker, and well behind others of his generation like Winfield and Rice.
