    You simply cannot use the "until last year" phrase when talking about a 39 year old baseball player. He's coming in as another veteran for Dusty to overuse. The likelihood of him using Jones/Grissom in a proper platoon is extremely low since Dusty has shown little ability to properly platoon players, wait through the slump of an inexperienced player, limit the playing time of unproductive veterans, and properly read splits. You absolutely can when the sample size was nearly 1/4 of a normal major league season. Perhaps it was so small because he's so old and so bad that like his game, his body was falling apart and even the Giants couldn't justify using him more. If you're talking about a 32 or 33 year old, you're making some sense (although trusting Dusty to do it right is a stretch), but when you're talking about a 39 year old, and you're just assuming the previous disaster year was a fluke and that he'll be just fine next season, well, you're glossing over the harsh realities and just trying to paint the prettiest picture you can.

    And Grissom hit .217 .245 .261 against LHP last year. Dusty would find a way to use Grissom over Murton, and he would never be able to figure out a proper platoon between Jones and Grissom (not that one exists since they aren't good enough to be your RF). A sample size of 137 at bats season for that matter is basically useless. Marquis Grissom is basically useless. You'd have to care very little about the outcome if you're willing to give the benefit of the doubt to a 39 year older player with substandard career numbers coming off a disastrous age 38 season. I'm pretty comfortable looking at that limited sample size and theorizing that Grissom won't help the Cubs at all this year.

    A position to be successful is just an excuse to hold a guy out as often as possible. Dusty will screw this up, if it happens. If Grissom doesn't take away his time, then Mabry will. If Grissom is on this team, there will be way too many days when Jones and Grissom are on the field at the same time.

    Come on, please be reasonable here. It makes no sense to over expose Grissom by having him start over Murton or platoon with him. Even Dusty knows Murton hits well against LHP (I would be concerned if Marquis was lefthanded). Logic dictates that he will split time with Jones Dusty doesn't know crap about splits. He did play Karros against a ton of RHP, and he was terrible. It makes no sense to even consider putting a 39 year old has been who never was like Grissom anywhere near this roster. There is no logic when it comes to Dusty thinking. Any Cubs fans who has paid the least bit of attention would realize this type of move would most likely cut into Murton's playing time.

    Neither Hairston or Mabry is close to being a "good enough" 4th OF. Who's your ideal 4th OF? Murton? This team is so far beyond what could be considered ideal, that I don't know who my ideal 4th OF is. The best thing would be to find a big corner OF bat, and have Jones as the 4th guy. But since that isn't going to happen, I'd rather find a good OF bat and have Murton platoon with both corner OFers and get 300-450 AB. They went into the offseason in desperate need of an impact bat, and they still need one.

    The problem is the Cubs don't have anybody more promising than Kelton ready to take 460 ABs in a corner OF spot in Iowa.

    Neither Hairston or Mabry is close to being a "good enough" 4th OF. Good enough to the point where we don't need to sign another outfielder, unless they have at least a .900 OPS. Completely disagree. They need another OF. Preferably one that is better than any of the current guys (and an 800 OPS would probably do that). But at the very least they need a decent 4th OF, because their 3 starters are already weak, and the bench guys aren't any good either.

    He's very old, very bad, very impatient. But contrary to what many think, he never played in SF while Dusty was there. He'll be 39 this season, has substandard career numbers and was absolutely brutal last season. This would be just another example of the idiocy of this management team.

    No, it's can't be solid, unless you define solid as able to take the field most days. That OF is brutal, possibly bottom 5 in the league, maybe worse. It's definitely going to be below average. And that's not solid. It doesn't matter if 1B and 3B are powerful, they aren't good enough to offset crappy OF production.

    They can trade Joe B at the trade deadline to a team that needs bullpen help and get even more young guys. Doubtful. Joe's not going to bring you back anybody of quality. And signing guys with the hope of trading them later makes no sense to me.

    Furcal was talking with two teams, the Cubs and Braves, before the Dodgers came out of nowhere and offered a lot more money than either of them. Perhaps if Jim had the foresight to offer a great contract to Giles, he wouldn't have been so quick to sign in SD.

    From what I'm reading I don't see Rex playing at all. The coaches have all expressed how little can be gained from playing Rex, and now even Grossman is saying the few snaps he'd get wouldn't help much. I'm hoping to see Orton air it out a lot.

    Of course they could. My problem is that with their payroll advantage, the Cubs should win the division. They shouldn't just be contenders, they should be favorites. They should consistently win 90+ games, and with a top 5 payroll every year of his tenure, Hendry should have a great team by now. We shouldn't have to be like Twins fans who are hoping the rest of the division isn't all that good and that we get surpisingly large production/cost ratios out of several players.

    If the Cubs are smart they'll overpay a little now to lock him up before it gets to that point.

    You and I would. Unfortunately, it comes down to Colletti and Hendry. Jmo but it comes down to McCourt not wanting to take another beating from the LA media. They'll have to get a nice return if they deal off Kent. Jmo again, but Drew's more likely. So let's get Drew. I'd be all over that.

    It's not the only one that matters, but it is the biggest problem on the team. This isn't about trying to match last year's winners, it's about trying to be the best they can be, and right now the Cubs are severely trailing in that race.

    Not necessarily. Depends heavily on a bounceback from Pierre, who is playing 2B, how often Neifi plays, whether Murton can get the job done and/or what veteran Dusty replaces him with. There's a good chance they'll get solid OBP from 1B and 3B. They should have above average OBP from CF. Barrett's game is more about his AVG and SLG than OBP, but he could be above average for C (though you have to remember Blanco will get lots of time and significantly bring down the overall OBP from that position). You can't just say the OBP is good from 6 of 8 so let's ignore it. The Cubs have a clear OBP problem, and it's directly tied to lack of walks. That problem hasn't gone away. The goal should not be about being average, or even above average in this department anyway, it should be about being great. But the Cubs were awful and are probably still below average.

    They've been significantly better year after year. They haven't regressed enough, and the Cubs haven't improved enough to make up the difference. Jones is not better than whoever they throw out there in right, Encarnacion is very similar, and quite possibly better since he's younger and coming off a better season in a pitchers park. Pujols is likely going to be much better than Lee this year. Lee is probably going to regress from last year a bit, with Pujols staying the same (although he has a shot to be even better). I'm not about to guarantee Cedeno will hit as well as Eckstein, and besides, Neifi will get a lot of time out there, and guarantee less production than Eck. Likewise, Murton, and whatever hack veteran Dusty replaces him with are not guarantees to outproduce STL LF. You can't compare offenses with simple ><= looks at each position.

    I can't stand the hype either. But he doesn't suck. He can be a productive 2B. Moving him to the OF is stupid. I don't want him, but there are worse options (like having Jones hit 5th).

    Giles is just one of many options Hendry could have taken to signifcantly improve the team, not selectively improve certain areas of the team. The only time he's discussed at length is when people try and act as if there was no chance whatsoever to get him. Other than that he's just another in a long list of names that Hendry has missed out on.
