That is almost certain. You don't sign a guy to that deal unless he is going to start. But my point is he is currently a backup, and while he's somewhat young, he's no pup for a guy that hasn't earned a starting gig yet, turning 27 this offseason. At his weight, with no ACL, does anybody think he'll be a full-time healthy starter for half of this 6 year deal? -
The Cubs define earn differently than many others. Given the current roster, and his likely competition for the spot, he won't have to do much to be added to the 40-man and given a full paying gig.

I like the idea of signing guys early before they get a chance to get big money, but $4m up front for a backup guard? I know Chelios showed that a star athlete can play well without an ACL. But he was in great shape. How will a fat offensive lineman with the comfort of guaranteed money hold up? The offensive line depth is a real concern for me. They are extremely thin and old at the tackle spots, and need to look for help in the draft. -
He would not be at the end of the bench. He'll be 39 years old. He doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt that he'll go back to the way he once was. His age 38 season was awful, and while it may be due, in part, to being injured, that's what you expect from mediocre players as they get old. And if you look at Dusty's history there is no way he properly uses Grissom in a platoon with Jones, none. Jones is the starting RF, he'll play almost every day if healthy this year.

Even if he did he'd still be a terrible option for RF. His career numbers aren't good.

You shouldn't be. If he's truly the 5th or 6th option off the bench, Hendry has done another terrible job putting together the bench. What is more likely is that he'd be the 8th or 9th best option, but Dusty would bump him up the list due to service time. Give me a break. If he's the 5th or 6th option off the bench that means that he's the 25th man on the roster. What exactly do you want out of the 25th man? Why do I have to give you a break? My point is that if he makes the team, he will likely do it due more to age than ability. That would be bad for the team. And while he might be designated as the 25th man by some, he'll get a lot more playing time than a 25th man should, as he'll likely become the 4th starter, subbing for Murton more than he should, and coming up in big pinch hit spots when a real pinch hitter should be in there. Grissom is about the 29th man on a good team, he could easily become Dusty's go to guy off the bench if/when Neifi gets a starting gig.

Lenny Harris hit .262/.295/.357/.652 in ST of '03 and still made the team. Grissom had a hamstring strain last year, I don't know if that was his only injury. Yeah, but in fairness, Harris is and was a pinch hitting extraordinare. He actually wasn't. He was just old enough, and both not too good to be a starter or too bad to not make a roster to rack up a meaningless career achievement. He had a lot of career pinch hits, but he wasn't particularly good at it in any given year. He was similar to an old reliever who stuck around long enough to get the most holds, but was never close to good enough to be a starter or closer, and never actually a really good reliever in any one year.

Or if nobody else was offering a major league deal, maybe they realized they didn't have to. Or maybe he told his agent to talk to the Cubs because he wanted to play for Dusty (a notorious fan of veterans). Or maybe they just couldn't find the roster space right now, and told him they were going to clear some space soon and would therefore have to go minor league with him, for now. Regardless, he's not going to have to mash, he's just going to show that he's their 5th or 6th best bench option. Given the makeup of this team, the crappy bench, the likelihood that Walker and Patterson will be gone, and Dusty's fetish for old unproductive ballplayers, Grissom will not have to do a whole lot to make the team. He might just have to prove he's healthy and still able to run around the bases and catch fly balls.

Why does a minor league deal mean that? The Cubs are very thin on the bench and in the OF, are rumored to really want to get rid of Walker and Patterson, and have an affinity for old players. It's a big deal if Dusty takes to the guy, which is pretty likely.

Do you really think the Mets would deal Diaz for Walker? Does Omar covet Walker that much? I really doubt it, but they do want to get rid of Kaz. And the OF is still somewhat cluttered. I could see them dealing Diaz if they end up with Manny, or I could see them dealing him if they could get some pitching in return. Diaz had somewhat of a disappointing season in 2005. He was sent down for a month and a half, and didn't do any better upon his return. In the NY media and many fans eyes, he is way down the ladder in terms of importance to the team, with an obvious fixation on bigger names. Reyes and Wright are the focus as far as youth in concerned, while Delgado, Beltran and Floyd are the big bats they are counting on to complement the youth. If you took back Matsui, and gave them a 2B they could count on for the season, then I think you could start talking about Diaz if you threw something else into the mix. They like him, but they aren't in love with him.

More than likely? I'd say he's a clear-cut favorite to make the Cubs. There's a slight chance ST would be an audition for another team, but I can't see it as "more than likely". We shall see. To me he is at best a 5th outfielder. Peirre Jones Murton Patterson Marbury Hairston Grissom If the Cubs the Cubs get rid of Patterson, slide everyone up. He still won't make the team. Teams do this kind of stuff every year. Once Walker is traded, Hairston will be considered an IF. Corey will likely be gone as well. That leaves Pierre, Jones, Murton, Mabry and Grissom. Mabry is already considered a OF/IF to a degree. As of now the bench is Blanco, Neifi/Cedeno, Hairston, Patterson, Mabry and Grissom. If the more veteran bullpen gives them confidence to go with just 11 pitchers, those 6 are in the lead. That's 2 MI, 1 corner IF/corner OF, 2 OF and 1 C. Teams do sign veterans to NRI all the time. And the Cubs happen to give those guys jobs all the time. The Cubs have 2 guys on their roster right now who they have openly talked about getting rid of, and they don't have enough other bench guys to push Grissom into a AAA spot. They still need bench help, not to mention a real starting corner OF or other bat, and starting pitching help.

Oh I think Grissom would clearly get the job, although Neifi would get a look as well. Hairston would have an outside shot if he gets into Dusty's good graces.

If he thinks Grissom could lead off and not be a disaster he's mistaken. Grissom was as bad as Corey last year. At 39 I don't see a big bounce back year. He'll probably be worse than Corey this year, and Corey isn't even the best backup plan for leadoff.

I would not expect this year's total LF production to be significantly better than last year's total LF production. The Cubs LF put up .265 .319 .418 last sesaon, and while I would hope Murton can do better, somebody else is going to get a lot of time, and will probably drag down the number.

Here's our first bet. ;) Alright I'm out. What's the bet? That Murton will outproduce Cedeno? That doesn't say much about who is better, since Matt is a LF and Cedeno is a SS. To say that Murton is better he would have to have a significantly higher OPS.

Are you refering to this line by me? If so, I don't know how else to phrase it. If you've paid attention to the Cubs, you have to realize that Grissom would cut into Murton's playing time. I didn't say he'd platoon with him. And for the record, my line came in response to an earlier post by you, saying somebody was unreasonable for noting that rotoworld and dusty won't necessarily make the same decision. I think it's perfectly reasonable to suggest a Grissom acquisition would mean he'll start for Murton on occasion, which would be stupid. What I think is unreasonable is expecting Dusty to go against character and suddenly make the one untested guy in the group the everyday player without threat of a platoon by a veteran.

It is neither contrary to common sense or anywhere close to hyperbole. It would be against common sense to player Grissom over Murton at all, but it wouldn't be against common sense to believe Dusty would do it? How many times does he have to make the same stupid decision before people will believe there's a trend in his thinking? If you want to hope for the best and expect Dusty to do the right thing on this, go right ahead, I wish I could join you. But don't go insulting everybody else who has seen enough of this tragedy to draw their own conclusions.

Ignoring for a second what I really think about the management group: If Grissom is given 100 at bats vs lefties only, and Jones faces only a very small number of lefties, then there is a chance the Cubs will get decent RF production overall. My problem is this team shouldn't have to hope for best case scenario to get decent production. They should be guaranteed decent with a solid shot at very good or great.

The Cubs have done nothing to make me believe they are capable of achieving anything better than the worst case scenario. Besides, I'm not even sure I've ventured into WCS mode. I'm not yet saying Murton will be in AAA and MG will play 162 games. I'm saying he'll play entirely too much if he is on the team, and that Murton will be unfairly benched far too often as a result of circumstances he can't control (his lack of experience and Dusty's illogical dependence of experience over all else). Everything he and the Cubs have done to date points to this happening. When somebody says there's no way it'll happen that way, I just point out the way it's always been with this gang of roster abusers. Sorry if it seems harsh, but they piss me off.

Um I think Juan Le Pierre is more in jeopardy than Murton. Jeopardy of what? Losing his job? He's been the centerpiece of their offsesaon. He's their ideal candidate for the much coveted speedy leadoff man. Dusty is on record stating that he will play the guy with the bigger contract because that is why the guy got the contract. Couple that with his history of favoring older players, and all the positive things he has to say about older players, and that Murton was one of the few guys who Dusty openly criticized by name in the press, and it's pretty safe to assume that Murton will be the odd man out of the current OF.

I wonder if there is a font for pompous... So I'm pompous for pointing out that 39 year olds don't just bounce back from off years? If you're looking at a guy like Grissom and seriously considering him a decent option on this team, you can only do that by highlighting the positives and completely ignoring the negatives.
