  1. I'm not fine with it if it means Lugo and Neifi are the SS and 2B.
  2. I don't applaud the effort. I don't mean that I think he's slacked off, I just think he completely misread the team and the offseason and therefore didn't make the necessary effort to improve. He basically tinkered. I don't think he drastically changed anything. They're still a free swinging ballclub with no OBP. They still have a horrible outfield. Neifi is still likely to play way too much. It's not just the results. They apparantly didn't see the flaws because they didn't come close to fixing them. That is so like the Cubs under Andy MacPhail, lowered expectations. It's just a variation of the "We're trying to build a team that can compete within the division" line that is exactly why this team has never come close to greatness. Strive low, so it's easier to achieve your goals.
  3. Not this year. I think the Giants beat Carolina in the regular season. I heard the quote, and thought he said that every game in the 2nd round of last year's playoffs that was a rematch from the regular season had the same outcome in the playoffs. FYI, the Giants and Carolina didn't play this regular season.
  4. Ah man, didn't think of that. I'm rooting hard for the Bengals now. I am so sick of the Chad Johnson story. I can't wait for it to end.
  5. I would not write them off, but I wouldn't hesitate to trade them if it made the team better. Neither has come close to living up to any sort of expectations yet. Neither has done anything to earn the benefit of the doubt. If somebody else values them highly and would take them in a deal that brings the Cubs a solid major leaguer, Hendry has to make the move.
  6. The problem is Hendry employed about 3-4 "25th man" type of players. And he knew Dusty's usage pattern. He saw what Dusty did with Macias, then he went out and gave the guy a raise to come back and do it again, only worse.
  7. Willy at 23 was no better than Corey was at 22, and substantially worse than Corey was at 23.
  8. Well we've had our first talk of bulletin board material. I hate that storyline myself. Writers bait guys into giving them some sort of quote, then other writers do their best to hype up the quote, and the other team does their best to make it sound as disrespectful as possible. Unless guys are flat out saying the other team doesn't have a chance, they stink and don't deserve to be on the field, I'm not interested. And if you need this crap to motivate your team, you aren't going far on that gimmick.
  9. Perhaps what? UK noted that Eli, at $750,000, made less than Macias, and would be a decent bench player, given his numbers vs lefties.
  10. Why not? They've wasted far more on other guys who are mostly just gloves, and their entire offseason focus was on guys who can catch the ball.
  11. The same Marrero that had a .894 OPS in 2004'. The Marrero that has a .973 OPS vs. Lh'ers over the last 3 years, that includes his '05 season with the Royals. He'd be the best RH'ed option off the bench. For a bench player, yes. If Colorado is thinking of making him a starter, all I can say is good luck with that. Marrero couldn't even hit right handed pitchers worth a darn. I think that was the point of talking about how he's making $750k.
  12. I think the most compelling reason would be that there is a good chance he was the 4th best OF on the team, and $3m is not outlandish for 4th OF, especially not for a team that guarantees $5m for Neifi Perez. There was also a decent chance he'd be the 3rd best OF, and an outside shot of being the best or second best OF on this years team. That's not saying I expect him to be all that good this year, but the current OF isn't any good, and it wouldn't take much to outproduce some of them, at least. Neifi had a far better year than Corey did. Perhaps. But he still sucked, and he consistently sucks. Corey's off year was an unexpected low. Neifi's crappy season was an expected clunker. The point is if you are willing to pay Neifi $5m, you have to be willing to pay Corey $3m, so money can't be the reason.
  13. After last year, Corey has nothing to stand on. Would look like lots of sour grapes. Fine, I'll settle for any current or former Cub blasting Dusty. I think that would only serve to make the player look bad and Dusty look like a martyr who had to deal with a bunch of malcontents.
  14. 15. I really doubt that. I'm hoping he's averagem, anything more would be greedy.
  16. I'd rather have Todd as the 4th OF than Grissom or Mabry.
  17. But to be fair, it's not like the performance is all that special. It's acceptable for the position, but hardly impressive.
  18. It's not the coaches fault, it's the players. The players have to play. The coaches can't play for them. The GM gets the players, the coaches coach the players, and the players play. Obviously the failures of so many players means that the players are at fault, and since the scouts, front office and coaches have all "been there" and "know the game", we know it can't be their fault.
  19. He just got one from Baltimore. Obviously I don't know for sure, but I think he's done with SS, considering there isn't much else out there, unless the Lugo talk increases. My guess is he's happy with Cedeno and more than happy with the idea of Perez as the backup. I wonder though if all this talk about SS this winter means he's really not as hot on Ronny as would be expected by his aggressive promotion of Cedeno earlier in his career. Maybe he'll look for another 2B so Neifi can start at SS.
  20. They would have had a better chance of having Corey be productive in a couple years than either of these guys?
  21. I think he's got a chance. Pierre should be the easier one for him to beat, but Jones should be within sight. I'd say it's about 10/1 he outproduces both.
  22. I think Weaver has consistently shown he's not that good, and unless he's interested in a 1 year make good deal with the Cubs, I hope somebody else signs him. He's exactly the type of predicatable innings-eater that is currently in vogue. He's averaged 222 IP of park adjusted, league average ERA over the past two years with LA. I'm not saying the Cubs should jump all over him. I'm just saying that someone will. I agree with you. I see 3/27 written all over him. But do you find it at all strange that he hasn't had much of a bidding war at all for his services? The two most powerful bidders, NYY and BOS, as well as another frisky high payroll team, NYM, will probably stay very far away due to the fact that he failed miserably in NY. The Angels could step in, but they are typically a team that targets what they want and get it without delay. I could actually see Detroit, with their recent history of overpaying for name veterans in an apparant effort to garner respectability, as a bidder, but I'm just not seeing a big market out there. There's a chance he slips through the cracks, or isn't willing to accept 3/27 and is hoping for 4/50, and will therefore take a one year make good deal.
  23. I'm basing it on past, and recent, results, along with the current roster. I think the current roster is comparable to the Cubs, but their ability to consistently get the job done makes me think that they will have a better chance to improve the team later than the Cubs will. Besides, past results are the most important thing, the trend is your friend. The Cubs would have to drastically change who they are in order to maximize their chances, not because they are unlucky lovable losers, or any other junk like that, but because they are an inefficiently run team that lacks a solid organizational plan. Houston just has to stay the course to get the most out of their team.
