  1. Jim should. I realize this but I don't need pain inflicted in me everytime another team makes a better signing than us. If you don't want the pain, I'd stay away from any Cubs info all winter (and maybe even all next season).
  2. Nope. Nope. He was eligible for free agency, but chose to accept arbitration instead. He made $1.1m last year, and probably stands to make as much as $2.5-3m in arbitration. Sometimes teams hate when free agent accept arbitration. They'd rather the player go and the team get picks instead.
  3. Nothing wrong with that; most teams have some veteran filler at AAA. There are legitimate reasons for questioning Hendry, but I don't think signing Augie is one of them. Let me rephrase that: why can't we restrict candidates for "veteran filler" to legitimate ballplayers? This guy has no business being a heartbeat away from Wrigley Field. As long as they keep him more than a heartbeat away, there is no problem. If he's 3 or 4 heartbeats away, he's a lot like most guys that are that far down the depth chart.
  4. I don't think it makes sense to compare across sports. Just look at Jeter. Everybody claims he's clutch. Yet, his postseason and regular season numbers are nearly identical. They remember the big plays he made when the Yankees one, but forget the bad results he creates when they lose. He's just a good player whose numbers translate to production in the clutch or out of the clutch.
  5. The improved morale really helped results form 2004 to 2005. If Walker hurt the team's morale, and thus hurt their chances, a less stupid GM would have chosen to stay with that gutty team guy Grudz when he had the chance instead of resigning Walker. Yep, should have kept Grudz. Too bad Hendry went the Moneyball route. :( Hendry, Moneyball? I'm sure he never read it, and I know he's never filled his roster that way.
  6. Right now I'd say likely. But I don't want to vote until I see what other moves Hendry will make. If he does get some OF bats like Wilson, the chances go down.
  7. I wonder if we can say that Restovich was the Twins version of David Kelton. A lot of promise that didn't pan out short term, but maybe a change of scenery re-energizes them to get back on their trajectory. He's got a better track record than Kelton.
  8. The improved morale really helped results form 2004 to 2005. If Walker hurt the team's morale, and thus hurt their chances, a less stupid GM would have chosen to stay with that gutty team guy Grudz when he had the chance instead of resigning Walker.
  9. Were people really dismissing the notion that the Cubs might get rid of Walker because of his supposed attitude, or were they dismissing the notion that his attitude justified a move? I know that long before he was resigned people were questioning how the front office would perceive the guy who kept having stuff to say to anybody who would listen. But if the Cubs were that concerned with his attitude, why did they choose him over Grudz when they had the chance? Walker was a little cheaper, but the Cubs have shown a willingness to spend more to get rid of the bad guys and replace them with others.
  10. My feelings: I don't like the Grisson signing, not because I think he's a bad option to give a minor league deal to, or to have as a backup plan for Jones's platoon partner, but more because I fear Dusty will let him have a job he does not deserve and will play him more than is reasonable and part of that time will come at the expense of Murton. As a pure baseball move though, it's not bad. (but would he really accept a job in Iowa as insurance, or was there a handshake deal that he'd be rostered when the time came?) The Augie deal is meaningless. I can't envision even him getting a job. But if he does, that's just pathetic planning on the Cubs part. The Restovich deal is the type of move I like to see made, taking a chance on young players with some skills that fit needs.
  11. I like Kerry Wood's mulletted twin, and wouldn't have a problem with this trade, assuming Walker was gone one way or another. They still would have to find a way to limit Neifi's time in the lineup.
  12. I don't know. Washington gets a steal. I think the Cubs get a fair deal, but they are forced to go with Neifi at SS full-time, and lose their pitching depth. I'm not sure that's a fair deal for Chicago. It depends a lot on the money. Unless it's an enormous amount, that'll put them well over any current realistic budget. Vidro is still a huge question, so not only are you forcing Neifi into the everyday spot, you have no assurance that 2B will make up for it. The pitching staff is forced to go with Rusch, even if Wood is healthy, and will probably have to dip further into the well to find innings. Remember, Boston couldn't give Manny away for free before. I see no reason why adding Vidro to the mix would turn it into the Cubs giving up 6 young players.
  13. I'm not high on the get Manny talk. His prime production was enough to gloss over his quirks and complete defensive indifference. I'm not sure his post-prime production will stay the same, or come close to justifying $19-20m per year and the talent they'd have to give up to get him. He's a year young than Giles, who I would have gone as high as 3/45 without giving up talent in return (besides another pick that's gone anyway). Manny is guaranteed 3/57 (plus another $1m if traded, and all sorts of other incentives). He's a butcher in the field, literally takes games off, and has a questionable attitude. I'm willing to look past all that stuff if the price were right, but giving up Murton, Ohman, Hill, Cedeno and Williams, and paying all that money doesn't make the price right in my book. I wouldn't mind playing middle man with Manny. And I really wouldn't have a problem with him on the team, but he's not a guy I see the Cubs having any interest in (they'll think Sammy part 2), while I couldn't blame them for that. And if they did get him, they'd have to come somewhere between paying up next to nothing in terms of talents, or getting back a ton of cash so as to not bust the budget.
  14. Any GM should savor the opportunity to get Tejada for role players, as opposed to pre-prime studs. I'd have no problem if the Sox end up with Tejada, unless it was for a package the Cubs could have beat with their own prospects and role players.
  15. Ugh. Cabrera and Erstad combined aren't half of what Manny is offensively, not even including Clement. I've read and heard a few rumors that Kenny Williams is ready to pounce on the O's if the Boston deals fall by the wayside - his latest offer is Contreras, Uribe and 2 prospects. Baltimore would have to be really stupid to take on an old pitcher and another mediocre veteran like Uribe. They'd have to get 2 very solid prospects in that deal to justify the move. It's moves like these that keep bad teams from getting any better than mediocre.
  16. It's hard to bring pressure to a quick pass attack like last night's. He was throwing in under 2 seconds every time, including a ton of dump offs underneath. FSU was penalized a lot more than PSU, but I saw two blatant 15 yarders by the Criminoles that were ignored, plus another pretty close one. There was a late hit on the QB in the 3rd, and on the fumble another cheap shot thrown by somebody on FSU right in front of a ref who was looking down. FSU is a sloppy ballclub, they had more penalties for a reason. They've been relying on overwhelming team speed, especially on defense, to win for years, and are not at all disciplined. Robinson missed about 3-4 wide open guys in that third quarter, and made a couple stupid running decisions that prevented PSU from getting out of that field position hole earlier. I don't know if the coaches put a ridiculous harness on him and don't allow him to throw when a guy is within 5 yards of a receiver, but he seemed to lock-up a couple times. I really thought he'd be an intriguing late round draft pick, but he was a bit disappointing to me last night. He's still got a lot of improvement to make. I wouldn't assume Pozwhateverhisnameis is gone. That knee injury might bump him into the 2nd round, which could inspire him to try and be a top half of the 1st round guy the following draft.
  17. I'll be more than happy to wager on the playoffs.
  18. You may get more than you want. The Bears won in Tampa with Orton at QB. If we play Tampa, it will be in Chicago with Grossman at QB. I like our chances. The only way the Bears scored was b/c Simms fumbled on the 1. Don't kid yourself into thinking the Bears are great. They're better than Tampa.
  19. Until Baltimore wises up and realizes they suck, and shouldn't be going after current major leaguers, the Cubs should stay out of these talks. As long as they insist on trying to get equal current production (or more) let some other team make a stupid move. Baltimore is a really bad baseball team with a very weak core roster. Mora (who came back to earth and is likely to remain just an above average producer) and Roberts (who is likely to be closer to his post all star and career numbers than pre all star 2005 numbers) are their only good returning position players outside Tejada. The pitching is very weak. This is a 75 win team, maybe 80. Trading Tejada for one or two major leaguers isn't going to help much.
  20. I like the Restovich move. I'm surprised he was available for a minor league deal only, I wonder if he was considered a victim of the roid crackdown, since he put up solid minor league numbers and followed them up with good major league numbers before a recent decline. The guy seems more than capable of .280/.350/.475 type numbers. I'm not sure he's a good comparison to Dubois, past the surface. For one, he's got twice as many pro at bats. He was a 2nd round draft pick (I assume out of HS, since he debuted in rookie ball at 19), while Dubois went to college. Plus he's done a heck of a lot more than Jason in the majors. Dubois was a "take a shot with him" guy who put up good minor league numbers but was a bit old, breaking into the majors at 25/26. Restovich has been considered a pretty good prospect for a good amount of time, and made his major league debut at 23 after debuting in AA at 22 (compared to Dubois at 24). Dubois has a little more raw power, while he also strikes out a bit more frequently without offsetting it with more walks. Anyway I like taking the chance on this guy as a potential platoon partner with Jones. And I'd hate to see management take Grissom even if he has a better spring training. The only reason they should take MG over MR is if Restovich is a shell of his former self or he breaks a leg.
  21. Seriously, if you have tickets you're either a fan or a businessman who uses them to entertain clients. If you aren't excited about the possibility of a home playoff game, you aren't a fan.
  22. PSLs and all that go with it suck, but why would you get season tickets but not be "excited about going to a game in mid January?" I'd have a tough time feeling sorry for somebody who went through the effort of getting the PSLs but chose not to buy playoff tickets because it's too cold in January. probably largely due to Sunday night game against Atlanta. It was cold and nephew said that the restrooms were packed but no one was using them. Again, if you're buying Bears seasons tickets, you have to be aware of the chance you'll be attending a cold game. If they host a playoff game, you've got to go. Thinking about not attending because it's too cold is one of the weakest excuses I could imagine. If you're financial situation, health or child's health was in dire straits, then you make them available to a friend or family member, or maybe scalp them. Other than that there is no excuse.
