    No surprise that Archer is #1 1. Chris Archer, rhp, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee) Prior to June 1: 44 1/3 IP, 3.65 ERA, 20 BB, 49 Ks Since June 1: 56 1/3 IP, 0.80 ERA, 20 BB, 58 Ks Royals lefty John Lamb ran off a streak of 35 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, but Archer has a nice run of his own. Since the Cubs promoted Archer to Double-A, the 21-year-old hasn't allowed an earned run in five starts, a stretch of 28 1/3 innings. Since giving up a home run to the leadoff batter of the fourth inning on June 22 for high Class A Daytona, Archer has gone 36 2/3 innings—or 110 outs—without an earned run. How is Archer doing it? With a 93-95 mph fastball that touches 97 with downhill plane and a hard slider that is getting grades of anywhere from 60 to 70 on the 20-80 scale, making it one of the best breaking balls in the minors. Archer doesn't go to his changeup much, but he shows feel for that pitch as well with occasional sink and fade.     Since I was the guy that said he has been disappointing since being drafted, I gotta give credit where it's due. Very nice outing today from Raley. Kirk has thrown 9 scoreless now, including 4 today. :) Call out more Cubs prospects, please. That guy Vitters has done nuthin.

    Clearly Ryno was groomed for the role by Hendry and if he goes then there is no guaranty that Ryno is the next manager. Is Sandberg as terrible as everyone seems to think? He could be. I just know he has said things about sacrifice bunts in the past and everyone subsequently hated him, but does anyone have actual insights on his managerial style? Just wondering. He's backed up his hit-and-run and excessive bunting talk while managing in the minors. ...because that is how the game was played when Ryno was in his prime. The "daily double" of Dernier and Ryno made a killing doing this in '84. That is how the game was played back then and that is how Ryno knows the game. What scares me about him is that he doesn't seem flexible enough to change with the game. Some of what he says I completely agree with (respect the game, appreciate the fans, it is a privilege to play) but a lot of what he has done in the minors I disagree with as the game has simply evolved without him (or so it would seem). Giving up outs is no longer a consistently good game strategy IMO. I fear that Ryno will try to implement the '84 style of play in 2011 and fail miserably. He is easily my favorite player and seeing him fail isn't something that I want to watch.

    He had a decent run in Chicago. This doesn't come as a surprise though. 2008 was my favorite season as a cub fan. Having said that, I think it was time to go. Likewise for Hendry.

    Not sure how I remember this, but when Prior was drafted I was reading some articles by/about his personal pitching coach (Tim House?). Anyway the jist of the article was that the bigger the difference, generally the more effective it will be - up to a point. A 95mph fb is best complimented by a 80-85 mph change. However if the difference between a fb and change is more than 15mph the effectiveness diminishes. Something like that....looking for the article now but not having any luck.

    Kind of disappointing. Given how long it's been since he's had Tommy John, I wonder if that velocity will ever come back. If he has a 74 mph changeup, the 89 mph fastball will work for him. No kidding. How is this even possible? The speed differential between the two has to typically be less than 10 mph, right? I think the ideal difference between a FB and change is 10-15 mph

    Seems like a good long-term deal for the Jays. Short-term, Gonzalez is an offensive boost for the Braves. I'm sure the poor attitude helped push Escobar out the door but I wonder if the Braves are making an all-out effort to make the playoffs in the final year for both Chipper and Cox.
