Good point but I wonder what they'll use to measure his success. The way this has gone so far I have no reason to believe that Selig won't ultimately be the one deciding the metric(s) as well.

I'll echo what a poster on that site already has stated -- I'm more interested in seeing how the process plays out at this point than finding out which player is involved. I don't think it will really be a player of significance to either team. If it's Dolis I'd be fine with that.

According to the trib, DeWit cleared waivers and has accepted an assignment to Iowa. He'll be a NRI at spring training.

WTF is wrong with you people? Spring training marks the beginning of baseball for me. It means that spring is around the corner. It means that I'll be watching/attending games soon. BeerWife and I are going to Mesa mid-March.

I do see your point and you may very well be right. I also understand that anything can happen in the playoffs. However, I think the team should be focused on building a long term WS contender rather than division titles. If you build a juggernaut, the division title will handle itself (at least in theory) and you don't bow out in the first round of the playoffs.

How do you see the offense being improved? Do you see LaHair being better than Pena? Losing Ramirez leaves a sizeable hole that Stewart probably doesn't come close to filling. DeJesus and Fukudome probably won't be a wash either. I think this team's offense is significantly worse than last year. The rotation should be better but Marmol is trending in the wrong direction. Honestly, I'm a Cub fan but I can't see this team winning more than 70 games even if everything doesn't fall apart. He didn't say the offense will be improved. Ugh, I thoroughly misread that. My bad.

Downsides: injuries to the rotation and Castro, Soto repeating 2009/2011 levels of performance, less power on this year's team, LaHair being a 4A player and Rizzo regressing. I could easily see this team being worse than last year.

62-64 tops and that's a good thing.

The organization is paying a large part of Zambrano's contract now while he plays for a competitor. I can't remember how much offhand but it is money that could have been used elsewhere more effectively. Grabow was terrible and barely pitched in his time here. I don't understand how you can defend either contract.

You can't evaluate Jim Hendry without taking into account the ridiculous contracts. Yes, his trades were pretty good, but the contracts to Soriano, Zambrano, Grabow and others were killers. He had a HUGE budget and used every penny. I would also say that his drafts were poor as well but scouting is a big part of that.

Levine has no inside information. He's a mouthpiece for ESPN and is assigned to the Chicago market. He knows no one and local beat reporters are much more knowledgeable (see Bruce Miles etc). -

I expect Zambrano and Guillen to make plenty of comments this season saying how terrible it was in Chicago and how great it is to be with people that understand them in Miami.

I'll be pretty angry if they don't make a significant effort to land Soler. I'd love for them to go after Cespedes as well but of the two I would prefer Soler. He needs some time in the minors and the team appears to be building for a 2012/2013 run. Moving Zambrano needed to happen but I sincerely hope they make a run at some guys that will contribute to wins rather than just "clubhouse culture". If there are players saying that they will not play on a team with Z anymore, they need to keep in mind that the team has been terrible for a couple years now. They are in the business of winning and not just getting paid and having fun while doing it. Clubhouse culture is great and all, but wins are much more important. I'm glad Z is gone but at some point we need to start seeing moves made that upgrade the team and not just the locker room.
