  1. And Paterno didn't literally enable a child rapist, and there isn't literally a plausible case that Paterno actively covered up for him by downgrading the seriousness of the allegations when he reported it to the AD and President. Oh wait, those are both literally true. Your account of what's gone on here is literally wrong. Truffle -- are you a PSU fan/alum/booster? An honest question from me, just trying to get some perspective here. I don't see anything inaccurate with what he stated above. All of this is alleged to have happened and he is innocent until proven guilty, but an 8th person has now come forward. The evidence is mounting and it isn't looking good. I agree with you that the football program isn't going to be reprimanded but even a booster or alum can't hide from the fact that some of this took place on university property by a university employee. There is some culpability there from a PSU standpoint, though I don't know what it is.
  2. Not reporting it immediately to law enforcement is reprehensible in my opinion, but I can't even fathom how much of a dirtbag he is if he covered it up. Agreed
  3. And Paterno didn't literally enable a child rapist, and there isn't literally a plausible case that Paterno actively covered up for him by downgrading the seriousness of the allegations when he reported it to the AD and President. Oh wait, those are both literally true. I have been looking for some details of what Paterno told the AD and it wasn't in the deposition on ESPN. What did he say that downgraded the seriousness? The grand jury's report describes what the GA saw in rather graphic detail that I'd rather not retype. Then it says that the GA "reported what he had seen" to Paterno at the coach's home the morning after it happened. Paterno then told the AD and President the report, but changed it to "fondling or something of a sexual nature," according to the grand jury report. So we are left with a few possibilities. 1) The G.A. did a poor job of explaining to Paterno what he saw. 2) Paterno was carrying water for his friend by changing what the G.A. saw to something that sounds a little less serious. 3) The Grand Jury report was wrong. We don't have enough evidence to know which of the three it is, but No. 2 sounds awfully plausible to me. wow. If that is true, just ugh, these people are deplorable.

  5. Didn't Zambrano or the players association file a grievance?
  6. Well yeah, but that's not going to happen for 1 year of a mentally unstable middle of the rotation pitcher no matter how much we eat. I was thinking that the 2013 option was his. According to this article is a player option if he meets some criteria. The 2013 option could kick in if he's healthy and finished in the top 4 in the Cy Young. I doubt it happens but it's still out there if he pitches extremely well in 2012. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2978642 Why would you not want him back on 1/19.25 if he was top 4 in Cy Young? From the team's perspective it's a no-brainer but like I said it's a player option for 2013 if he meets the criteria. If he pitches that well in 2012 I'd guess he would see what he can get as a FA and he declines the option.

  8. If I were GM I would pay his entire salary if we could get Montgomery or Hosmer.
  9. Agreed but I think they need to go a step further....how about actually helping the authorities in the investigation of a serial pedophile and the people that helped him cover up the fact that he was raping children on there property with their knowledge? It has to be more than simply costing a few coaches and the AD their job(s).
  10. The administrators are being charged with perjury and it looks like they can't charge Paterno with the same. However, it seems like there is grounds for some civil suits here. I'm no lawyer but no one took any reasonable steps to protect the kids here. I guess my point is this...whether criminal or civil I can't see a scenario where Paterno walks away from coaching and that ends it for him.
  11. Not that there was anything wrong with your post, but let's be clear about what this was. There are already some apologists out there trying to obfuscate the issue by calling it "abuse" or "fondling" or "inappropriate behavior." Agreed. I have edited my post to be specific.
  12. It seems like this story is going to get worse before it gets better. Eight victims so far. I read the deposition on ESPN and this guy sounds like a serial pedophile who used his program for at-risk kids to feed his compulsions. There are a couple parts that disturb me: 1) the fact that multiple knew they had an employee of the university that was a stalking pedophile and did nothing but try and cover it up. I can't help but feel like they allowed this to happen to protect JoPa and/or the university's precious "reputation" in Happy Valley. 2) the grad assistant......I can't seem to get past the fact that this guy (he wasn't a kid at 24 years old) witnessed a child being raped (he saw a 10 year old boy getting sodomized in the Penn State showers) and all he could think of doing was calling his dad? It never occurred to him or his dad that they should call the police? As a human being, at an absolute minimum you call law enforcement. What he should have done was stopped the guy in the act and protect a ten year old child from an obvious pedophile while dialing the cops. That guy is a textbook definition of a coward, and so is his dad.
  13. Apparently Sandusky wrote a book - "Touched" http://www.amazon.com/Touched-Jerry-Sandusky-Story/dp/1582613575/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320764022&sr=8-1
  14. My guess....Zambrano is traded to the Marlins for Morrison.
  15. Ozzie Guillen doesn't like Cuban players.
  16. posting.php?mode=quote&f=3&p=2708943# Why don't the smilies work for me? Go to the user control panel / board preferences / posting preferences (or something like that). There's an option to enable/disable smilies there. posting.php?mode=quote&f=3&p=2709086# When I go to the posting screen, I see smilies. What are you seeing? From the posting screen, I can select the smileys but they appear as just text. I don't want to derail the thread though. Not a big deal.

  18. No way in hell the Cubs have anything close to what it would take to get Lincecum. I doubt he gets traded but if I had to guess I'd say he's going to Texas.

  21. Meanwhile, the taxpayers pay for US Cellular Field in it's entirety and a brand new restaurant outside the ballpark. Not one penny came from Reinsdorf and the sox because he's buddies with the jackass mayor.
  22. Davis was terrible, Lopez, rotation Russel, Coleman, another Zambrano implosion.... Terrible season, mostly due to the rotation. Cardinals win the WS with crap despite losing Wainwright. 2011 was one of the worst overall seasons I can remember (now just W/L). Thankfully this offseason has gone extremely well. If it took sitting through 2011 to get rid of Hendry/Quade and amass this front office I'm ok with it.
  23. Hak Ju Lee, Chris Archer, the Rays #1 prospect and Maddon
  24. It doesn't seem like a good offseason to be in need of rotation help. Wilson, Darvish and not much else. That would imply that the trade market may be more active but the Cubs don't have much. I doubt the Rays make him available and even if they do, I doubt he winds up a Cub.
  25. I'm exaggerating a bit, but I never particularly liked him once I was old enough not to just love him for being a Cub. He was like Ryan Theriot in how he thought way too much of himself, especially on defense because of his overrated fielding percentage. His HOF speech really rubbed me the wrong way. I enjoyed the speech honestly. What didn't you like, the "playing the game with right way" part?
