  1. And he didn't immediately accept it because.......?
  2. I think this will depend greatly on (obviously) how well they start off, but more importantly, how well Castro and (potentially) Olt start off. If they play well, no need to rush the prospects or start their clock early.
  3. None of which trumps them winning the World Series. an assertion not made in my post Kind of implied though.
  4. Kind of want the Cubs to hire Martinez, and then have a full out brawl between the Cubs and Phils at Wrigley, where Martinez and Sandberg go at each other. Man, I didn't want Ryno as manager and I'd be ok with Martinez, but no way in hell would I ever want to see that.
  5. And Rosscup and Edwards and Vizcaino. Do we have 2 Vizcainos or something? Because I'd be happy for the 1 that I know of to work out.
  6. Not these days. Philly fans are fickle as everyone knows. They are a lost group right now, with now decent pro sports team. Everyone down there likes to call Amaro "Ruin Tomorrow".
  7. It sure as hell worked really nicely for a while there. 9 straight winning seasons. They went from an organization with a fan base that did not give a crap about them, to an attendance juggernaut. They made it to the LCS three straight years and the WS two years in a row. It absolutely worked. Even in a bad season they had 3 million attendance and you can't walk 5 feet in that market without somebody wearing Phillies gear. Granted, it's a little heavy on the middle aged chubby women in love with Chase Utley side, but that was never the case before. It failed because they didn't get any 1st draft picks during those 9 years. The only way I see the Phils contending for WS in the next 2 years is clearly orchestrating many 3 team trades. Why don't you start working on that for them.
  8. Three division championships and a pennant? God forbid. You really think that those were the expectations of the fanbase/ownership/management? I sure as hell don't, and that window is now cemented shut. And will open right back up in a year or two if they continue to willingly spend money. Over the next 2 years they will owe 50mil to Lee, 50mil to Howard, 45mil to Hamels, 35mil to Utley, 26mil to Papelbon and 20mil for 1 year of Halladay. They have been in win-now mode and its not working. My point above was, I'd much rather have our flexibility than theirs, because they don't really have much of an optimistic future from my seat. I'm against 100+mil contracts over 5+ years or whatever for pitchers, its cool if you're not.

  10. Honestly, unless Ricketts goes all LA Dodgers and trades for both and starts spending all over the place, I want neither. I don't want to give up our young assets for SPs that would soon cost us big money over long contracts. Everyone thought the Phils with Halladay/Lee/Hamels was the greatest rotation in the world, look how that's worked out. Sign Tanaka then identify the next Liriano type either thru trade or FA
  11. This is exactly what I took away from the alleged comment. Don't see how Theo being enamored with our farm could be described as "gross", but whatever.
  12. Trust me, I'd have had a lot more fun with all of that if he hadnt included the "currently active" part.
  13. Baez: Low: Hanley Ramirez Medium: Tulo High: A-Rod Bryant: Low: Longoria Medium: Beltre High: Cabrera Soler: Low: Werth Medium: Holliday High: Beltran Almora: Low: Ellsbury Medium: McCutchen High: Trout Ohhhh yeah
  14. gross I hope that isn't true Yeah, what an idiot, being all happy knowing that our top prospects are going to be awesome major leaguers. Makes me wanna puke, what with his confidence that we'll have a better future than the stinking Yankees. Bring back MacPhail/Hendry, they are true pros.
  15. Good ones CubinNY, super funny! Although, no, I wasn't. I thought I had read/heard somewhere years ago that the Mariners and Rockets franchises saw much increased revenue from interested markets they normally didn't have before they had Ichiro and Yao, respectively. I know it wouldn't be enough to cover a hypothetical 60MM posting fee, but figured it might help alleviate some of it and be enough to talk ownership into splurging. I wasn't certain, and the thread was kind of drying out, so I figured I'd ask.
  16. In what form would that added revenue come? Ticket sales, merchandise, added exposure all around, I guess. I really don't know, thus the reason for the question.
  17. So the posting fee is going to be high, but whoever signs this guy has gotta understand they will be getting someone that will surely add a lot revenue from the Asian fan community alone, right? I mean, I'd imagine Ichiro brought in a ton of money to the Mariners over his career from off the field and I'd assume Tanaka could provide something similar if hes the real deal.
  18. They are in limbo. I like to imagine them playing limbo while in limbo.
  19. I'm just curious - does anyone here who knows more about Vogelbach's prep career than I do (next to nothing), know if he was ever tried out at catcher? I'm not advocating for this move now, trust me (unless it could work, of course!). I'm just wondering if during his time in high school his coaches or parents never realized that his future as a pro would amount to DH, below average 1B or bust?
  20. agreed. yankees did the send-off perfectly (well, besides having him close out a world series game). i always admired the way he went about things - seemed like nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. even red sox fans, who hate everyone associated with the yankees, seemed to have a lot of respect for him. leaving out his rookie year, when he was mostly a starter, he had 11 seasons with an ERA under 2.00 and only 7 over 2.00. as a reliever, batters hit .207/.257/.284/.541 against him. pretty damn good. Admittedly, I'm ignorant on the whole issue other than googling articles that don't say much, but an old college friend of mine from The South is convinced that Mo had his pool set up to electrocute as a way to kill failed dogs or rooster from fighting. Either way, I think it's kind of really stupid to have an electrified swimming pool, especially considering the 2 relatives that died from it. So basically what I'm saying is, 2nd ballot.
  21. It wasn't the posing, it was everything that followed it. If we're following the Unwritten Rules of Baseball©, then shouldn't Gomez have just been plunked during his next PA? The whole blocking the plate thing was a really stupid tough guy act. You don't think trotting around the bases yelling god knows what at everyone as you pass isn't a stupid tough guy act either? Either way, this is where I wish MLB was more like NHL. Let 'em fight if they want to act macho.
  22. There is. It's called the criminal justice system. Those accused of crimes have either already had their day in court (Sandusky) or will soon (Schultz, Curley, Spanier). That's treating the symptom, not the disease. The culture at PSU (and other places) made it all possible and has to be changed. And the punishment is being reduced because the school is showing that they've changed the culture. I feel like EhDubya's stance is showing the culture hasn't changed. I'm not sure how me being proud of the countless student-athletes that have represented PSU honorably throughout my lifetime has anything to do with a criminal matter perpetuated by a few men. I guess everyone here should be ashamed to be American because of Nixon's Watergate scandal or Clinton lying about his affairs in the oval office? But like said above, weird to be talking about this in 2013 so I'll shut up now.
